In the last decade, enormous progress has been made on the physiology of plant roots, including on a wide range of molecular aspects. Much of that progress has been captured in the chapters of this book. Breakthroughs have been made possible through integration of molecular and whole-plant aspects. The classical boundaries between physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology have vanished. There has been a strong focus on a limited number of model species, including Arabidopsis thaliana. That focus has allowed greater insight into the significance of specific genes for plant development and functioning. However, many species are very different from A. thaliana, in that they are mycorrhizal, develop a symbiosis with N2-fixing microsymbionts, or have other specialised root structures. Also, some have a much greater capacity to resist extreme environments, such as soil acidity, salinity, flooding or heavy-metal toxicities, due to specific adaptations. Research on species other than A. thaliana is therefore pivotal, to develop new knowledge in plant sciences in a comprehensive manner. This fundamental new knowledge can be the basis for important applications in, e.g., agriculture and plant conservation. Although significant progress has been made, much remains to be learnt. It is envisaged that discoveries made in the recent past will likely lead to major breakthroughs in the next decade.

The Nato Advanced Research Workshop on Plant Hormone Receptors was held at the Physik Zentrum in Bad Honnef near Bonn, August 18-22, 1986. This workshop was mainly supported by the Nato Scientific Affairs Division and additionally cosponsered by Hoechst AG, Frankfurt and BASF AG, Ludwigshafen. The workshop aimed at focusing research on plant hormone recep tors. It should provide an opportunity to all who work in this field to report on their very recent data and to discuss their results with the most competent' colleagues. The total number of participants was limited to 30 to ensure personal contact and intensive discussions. Everyone had to either give a lecture or practical course. One half of the participants were invited, the other was selected by applications. Plant hormone receptors are assumed to exist but clear results are still rare. Nevertheless encouraging results have been published over the last years. Receptors for animal hormones and neuronal transmitters are well characterized, both structu rally and functionally. Therefore scientists dealing with recep tors for steroid hormones - Prof. E.E. Baulieu, Paris and Prof. J. R. Gustafsson, Huddinge - and for acetylcholine - Prof. A. Silicon (Si) is gaining increased attention in the farming sector because of its beneficial effects observed in several crop species, particularly under stress conditions. The magnitude of benefits is predominantly observed in plant species that can accumulate Si above a certain threshold. Therefore, deciphering the molecular mechanisms and genetic factors conferring a plant ability to take up silicon is necessary. Along these lines, several efforts have been made to identify the specific genes regulating Si uptake and distribution in plant tissues. This information finds its usefulness in identifying Si-competent species, and could eventually lead to improving this ability in low-accumulating species. The successful exploitation of Si in agriculture depends highly on the understanding of different Si properties including plant-available Si from the soil, transport within tissues, deposition in planta, and Si effect on different metabolic and physiological processes. In addition, a better comprehension of external factors influencing Si uptake and deposition in plant tissue remains important. A plant can take up Si efficiently only in the form of silicic acid and most soils, despite containing high concentrations of Si, are deficient in plant-available Si. Consequently, soil amendment with fertilizers rich in plant-available Si is now viewed as an affordable option to protect plants from the biotic and abiotic stresses and achieve more sustainable cropping management worldwide. Articles compiled in the present research topic touch upon several aspects of Si properties and functionality in plants. The information will be helpful to further our understanding of the role of Si and contribute to exploit the benefits plants derive from it.
