Coastal State Jurisdiction Over Living Resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone by Camille Goodman Pdf

Under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, coastal States have sovereign rights to explore, exploit, conserve, and manage the living resources of the 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ). However, 40 years after the adoption of the Convention, there is still a great deal of uncertainty about the nature and extent of these sovereign rights. Coastal State Jurisdiction over Living Resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone examines the ways in which coastal States can exercise authority on the basis of their sovereign rights over living resources in the EEZ. Dr Camille Goodman explores the key concepts of 'fishing' and 'fishing related activities' to establish what vessels and which activities can be regulated by coastal States, canvasses the criteria and conditions that coastal States can apply as part of regulating foreign access to their resources, and considers the regulation of unlicensed foreign fishing vessels in transit through the EEZ. Goodman also examines how such regulations can be enforced within the EEZ and the circumstances under which enforcement can take place beyond the EEZ following hot pursuit. A review and analysis of the practice of 145 States identifies the contemporary extent of coastal State jurisdiction over living resources in the EEZ and offers a unique, fresh perspective on the underlying and enduring nature of that jurisdiction. Underpinned by a rigorous examination of the Convention, jurisprudence, and literature, as well as being supported by carefully documented State practice, Coastal State Jurisdiction over Living Resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone proposes a more predictable framework within which to resolve jurisdictional challenges in the EEZ.

A Fishery Manager's Guidebook by Kevern L. Cochrane,Serge M. Garcia Pdf

Co-published with the Food and Agriculture Organization of theUnited Nations. Fisheries management is the process that hasevolved to try to ensure that fisheries operate in a manner thatprovides the immediate benefits in a sustainable manner. The widelyaccepted goal is that the full range of benefits should not only beavailable for this generation but for generations to come.Fisheries management has been successful in some cases but therehave also been many, many cases of failure. This volume is intended to contribute to improving thisunsatisfactory state by addressing the widespread need forinformation and guidance on the broad and often complex task offisheries management. It is an updated and expanded edition of thefirst version of “A fishery manager’s guidebook”which was published as a FAO Fisheries Technical Paper in 2002. The major part of this new edition is divided into five partsintended to cover the range of concerns, tools and techniquesessential to the modern fisheries manager, whether that manager isan individual or a formal or informal group. Following theIntroduction: Part I examines the primary dimensions of fisheries:biological, ecological, social and economic Part II looks at the legal and institutional characteristics offisheries Part III explores the tools that fishery managers have toachieve the objectives expected from a fishery Part IV discusses the role of scientific information ofindicators and reference points Part V moves into implementation of fisheries management andincludes a chapter on special considerations in small-scalefisheries This landmark publication is aimed at fishery managers andscientists. All libraries in research establishments anduniversities where fisheries and aquatic sciences are studied andtaught will need copies of this important volume. Fisheries around the world make essential contributions to humanwell-being including the provision of basic food supplies, employment, recreational opportunities, foreign currency andothers, providing benefits to hundreds of millions of people.Despite these benefits, our record of managing fisheries so thatthe benefits can be sustained has been poor, at best, and mostfisheries around the world are experiencing serious ecological, social or economic problems and usually all three. Today there isglobal concern about the state of fishery resources and aquaticecosystems, their resilience to future stresses such as climatechange and their ability to continue to provide benefits.

Governance of Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation by Serge M. Garcia,Jake Rice,Anthony Charles Pdf

Governance of Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation explores governance of the world’s oceans with a focus on the impacts of two inter-connected but historically separate streams of governance: one for fisheries, the other for biodiversity conservation. Chapters, most co-authored by leading experts from both streams, investigate the interaction of these governance streams from ecological, economic, social and legal perspectives, with emphasis on policies, institutions processes, and outcomes on scales from the global to the local community, and with coverage of a range of themes and regions of the world. The book opens with chapters setting the historical context for the two marine governance streams, and framing the book’s exploration of whether, as the streams increasingly interact, there will be merger or collision, convergence or co-evolution. The concluding chapter synthesizes the insights from throughout the book, relative to the questions posed in the opening chapters. It also draws conclusions about future needs and directions in the governance of marine fisheries and biodiversity, vital to the future of the world’s oceans. With cutting edge chapters written by many leading international experts in fisheries management and biodiversity conservation, and edited by three leading figures in this crucially important subject, Governance of Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation is an essential purchase for fisheries scientists, economists, resource managers and policymakers, and all those working in fields of biodiversity conservation, marine ecology, and coastal livelihoods. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where environmental and/or marine studies, conservation, ocean policy and law, biological and life sciences, and fisheries management are studied and taught, should have copies of this most important book.

Advances in Harvest and Post-Harvest Technology of Fishes by D.D. Nambudiri: Pdf

In recent years there have been notable advances in the fisheries. Progresses made in refinements of vessels, new line materials and line-handling systems, preserving the catch, the availability of oceanographic-sensor equipments and the utilization of satellite technology to locate potential fishing grounds have greatly improved the fishing power of longline vessels. Post harvest technology of fish has evolved in the last one decade to a more energy-efficient, cost-effective, and quality upgrading technology. Since fresh fish can get spoiled very quickly, the development of technology for post-harvest preservation and methodology to convert fish to value added products have also become popular in recent times. Value addition helps in getting high price for the fishery products. There is a need to develop competent human resources in the field of post harvest management of fish and production of value added products from them. It is required to inculcate vocational and entrepreneurial skills in order to widen employment opportunities, particularly among rural youth and the disadvantaged sections of the society as well as to enable self employment.
