Redox Regulation of Differentiation and De-differentiation by Carsten Berndt,Christopher Horst Lillig Pdf

Cell differentiation and the development of multicellular organisms are processes of self-assembly, controlled and driven by signaling molecules and cascades including redox regulation. These reactions may have provided the energy for the first metabolic steps in the evolution of life. Today, redox modifications are established as important regulatory events in cellular functions including differentiation and development. Redox modifications of single cysteines regulate differentiation of stem cells, formation of functioning organs, and de-differentiation such as formation of cancer cells. Current cancer therapy is based on redox events as well and regeneration often reactivates developmental pathways. Understanding differentiation and de-differentiation on a molecular level is therefore a prerequisite for the continuing development of new medical therapies. This book summarizes the roles of redox regulation in development by bringing together different concepts and comparing similarities and differences between various cell types and species. An international team of contributors presents several new aspects of redox-regulated differentiation and de-differentiation, including aspects of redox medicine. Key Features Provides the first summary on this important topic Reviews redox-dependent development of model organisms and single organs Highlights the redox-regulated pathways important for differentiation processes Illustrates the potential of redox medicine Combines state-of-the-art knowledge in differentiation/development, aging/longevity, and repair/regeneration Written by leading experts in the field Related Titles Ayyanathan, K., ed. Cellular Implications of Redox Signaling by Carlos Gitler,Avihai Danon Pdf

Redox regulation, like phosphorylation, is a covalent regulatory system that controls many of the normal cellular functions of all living cells and organisms. In addition, it controls how cells respond to stress involving oxidants and free radicals, which underlie many degenerative diseases. This area is undergoing a transition from general knowledge to specific description of the components and mechanisms involved. This invaluable book provides a timely basic description of a field whose relevance to cell biology and degenerative diseases is of the utmost importance. It describes the state of the art, lays the foundations for understanding the reactions involved, and presents the prospects for future developments. It can serve as a basic text for any undergraduate or graduate course that deals with redox regulation, oxidative stress and free radicals under normal and pathological conditions in bacterial, plant and animal cells. Chemical Probes in Biology by Manfred P. Schneider Pdf

This NATO Advanced Study Institute (co-sponsored by FEBS and INTAS) under the title "Chemical Probes in Biology" was designed to summarize and disseminate recent expert knowledge regarding a deeper understanding ofbiological phenomena on a molecular level. Such scientific activities -frequently termed Bio-organic Chemistry or Chemical Biology are constituting a highly interdisciplinary branch of chemistry beyond the traditional ways in which chemists and biologists have been working in the past. Thus, on this occasion we were bringing together senior experts from the disciplines of Chemistry and Biology in order to amalgamate their diverse yet basically common interests in this area. Ultimate goal was - next to an exchange of information between the two scientific cultures - the communication ofexciting possibilities in interdisciplinary research to the young scientists present. The meeting was held in the Anargyros and Korgialenios School on the Island ofSpeteses, Greece from 18-30 August 2002. The ASI was attended by a total of 91 scholars from 23 different countries. A group of 27 speakers presented a series of 34 highly stimulating, informative and educational lectures covering a broad range of topics relevant to the general theme ofthis meeting: Science at the InteifaceofChemistry, Biology and Medicine. The lectures were complemented by a total of 89 posters presented by the young scholars and a series of short lectures derived thereof This was clearly one ofthe highlites of the meeting creating a lively atmosphere of interaction and intellectual creativity - typical phenomena for the whole meeting.

The Dynamic Nature of Mitochondria by Andreas S. Reichert Pdf

Mitochondrial research has exploded over the last ~150 years. This book gives an amazing view on a conceptual change in our understanding of mitochondrial biology. It becomes clear that mitochondria are extremely dynamic in nature, controlling life at multiple levels. Mitochondria rule energy conversion, adapt cells well to changing stress and nutrient conditions, and regulate many cellular processes including immunity. The dynamic nature of mitochondria occurs at an intramitochondrial level but also includes its ability to interact with other organelles and to modulate multiple signalling pathways. It is thus not surprising that alterations or inabilities to ensure this dynamic behaviour is linked to ageing and human diseases. The following sections give an updated view on mitochondria: Mitochondrial ultrastructure: molecular mechanisms shaping the inner membrane Mitochondrial cristae and lipid dynamics: from super-resolution microscopy to lipid-OXPHOS interplay Mitochondrial control of cellular homeostasis: from redox signalling to interorganellar contact sites Mitochondria in health and disease: from mtDNA release to Complex I assembly Advanced methods in mitochondrial biology and metabolism research Integrative view on mitochondrial research and outlook The field of mitochondrial research has always been full of surprises and has helped science to advance tremendously. It developed hand in hand with landmark developments in technology, such as super-resolution microscopy (nanoscopy), and is currently influencing an increasing number of scientific disciplines. There is still much ‘new’ to find out about this ‘old’ organelle and I think that you can find interesting and also unexpected aspects of mitochondrial biology in this book. I hope the book will enhance your scientific curiosity and inspire your own research.

Dialysis, Dialyzers, and Sorbents by Claudio Ronco,James F. Winchester Pdf

Over the last decade, the availability of new devices and membranes has led to the development of modern hemodialysis techniques in which clinical tolerance and efficiency have significantly improved patient morbidity and mortality. Nevertheless, there are still limitations imposed by hemodialysis, manifested by the long-term complications occurring in patients treated for several years.Since most of these complications seem to be related to the chronic inflammation of ESRD patients and the progressive accumulation of middle-large molecules such as beta-2-microglobulin, GIP, leptin and others, a novel approach is needed, capable of adequately removing these substances from the body of the patient. New polymers with a biocompatible surface and high affinity for specific molecules have already been introduced to the market, and adsorption might in fact represent a new form of solute removal.Featuring articles by renowned experts, this volume provides the reader with a comprehensive summary of the most updated technology in the field of hemodialysis. New devices and techniques are described and discussed in detail, complemented by preliminary results; the rationale for adsorptive therapies completes the analysis. Residents and fellows, as well as staff physicians and members of the academic and scientific community involved in practice and research in the field of hemodialysis will find this book a valuable addition to their bookshelves.

Carotenoids and Vitamin A in Translational Medicine by Olaf Sommerburg,Werner Siems,Klaus Kraemer Pdf

Vitamin A (retinol) is an essential dietary compound with myriad metabolic and regulatory functions. Deficiency can result in vision problems, compromised immune responses, and a host of other medical issues. More than 600 carotenoids have been identified in plants, algae, fungi, and bacteria, and around 50 carotenoids—including β-carotene—can be converted into vitamin A. Carotenoids and Vitamin A in Translational Medicine reviews the medical use of carotenoids and vitamin A in cancer; diseases of the skin, eye, ear, and lung; and inflammatory bowel and metabolic diseases. It also discusses the analytics of carotenoids and the supply of carotenoids and vitamin A in developing countries. Serving a broad community of researchers and practitioners conducting basic and clinical analysis on carotenoids and vitamin A for medical purposes, the book evaluates basic research, epidemiological studies, and clinical trials in the field. It updates information on the worldwide problem of vitamin A deficiency and discusses extensively the pros and cons of carotenoid supplementation in cancer. The authors provide a comprehensive overview of the efforts made in the field of carotenoid research with respect to translational medicine and present the future outlook on carotenoids as new therapeutic agents. It is the editors’ intent through the contributions in this volume to expand this important discussion on therapeutic approaches using carotenoids and retinoids. In doing so, they hope to enhance the quality of research which brings safe, effective, and clinically proven medicines to patients.
