Games, Rhymes, and Wordplay of London Children by N. G. N. Kelsey Pdf

This book presents a unique annotated collection of some 2000 playground games, rhymes, and wordplay of London children. It charts continuity and development in childlore at a time of major social and cultural change and offers a detailed snapshot of changes in the traditions and language of young people. Topics include: starting a game; counting-out rhymes; games (without songs); singing and chanting games; clapping, skipping, and ball bouncing games; school rhymes and parodies; teasing and taunting; traditional belief and practice; traditional wordplay; and a concluding miscellany. Recorded mainly in the 1980s by primary schoolteacher Nigel Kelsey, transcribed verbatim from the children’s own words, and accompanied by extensive commentaries and annotation, the book sets a wealth of new information in the wider historical and contemporary context of existing studies in Britain, Ireland, and other parts of the English-speaking world. This valuable new resource will open new avenues for research and be of particular interest to folklorists and linguists, as well as to those working across the full spectrum of social, cultural, and educational studies.

The Fascination of Nursery Rhymes by Alexandra Zuralski Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1.0, University of Duisburg-Essen, 6 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: 1. Introduction Nursery rhymes have a long tradition in Great Britain. Adults still remember the short verses their parents have told them when they were children. So these rhymes are part of the English culture. In English lessons German pupils in primary school also have to learn about the English culture so that they get an impression of children's life in a foreign country. Cultural awareness is part of the curriculum. Nursery Rhymes are important in English children's life. So German children have to learn about it. Rhyme, rhythm and chunks are useful for language learning. The rhymes help the children to get to know the English sentence structure. These arguments show that young people who want to become a primary teacher have to know about nursery rhymes. Where do they come from? What is so fascinating about them? Are they useful in the primary classroom? In this essay I would like to find out about it. 2. The origin of nursery rhymes Nursery rhymes are oral literature children are confronted with. First - when they are still babies - their mothers sing lullabies to them. Here the tune is more important than the words (vgl. Opie, 2002, page 177).

In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials. Innovative, authoritative and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has established itself as a leader in the field. The full anthology comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes. For those seeking an even more streamlined anthology than the two-volume Concise Edition, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature is now available in a compact single-volume version. The edition features the same high quality of introductions, annotations, contextual materials, and illustrations found in the full anthology, and it complements an ample offering of canonical works with a vibrant selection of less-canonical pieces. The compact single-volume edition also includes a substantial website component, providing for much greater flexibility. An increasing number of works from the full six-volume anthology (or from its website component) are also being made available in stand-alone Broadview Anthology of British Literature editions that can be bundled with the anthology.
