Automorphisms of Riemann Surfaces, Subgroups of Mapping Class Groups and Related Topics by Aaron Wootton,S. Allen Broughton,Jennifer Paulhus Pdf

Automorphism groups of Riemann surfaces have been widely studied for almost 150 years. This area has persisted in part because it has close ties to many other topics of interest such as number theory, graph theory, mapping class groups, and geometric and computational group theory. In recent years there has been a major revival in this area due in part to great advances in computer algebra systems and progress in finite group theory. This volume provides a concise but thorough introduction for newcomers to the area while at the same time highlighting new developments for established researchers. The volume starts with two expository articles. The first of these articles gives a historical perspective of the field with an emphasis on highly symmetric surfaces, such as Hurwitz surfaces. The second expository article focuses on the future of the field, outlining some of the more popular topics in recent years and providing 78 open research problems across all topics. The remaining articles showcase new developments in the area and have specifically been chosen to cover a variety of topics to illustrate the range of diversity within the field.

Advances on Superelliptic Curves and Their Applications by L. Beshaj,T. Shaska,E. Zhupa Pdf

This book had its origins in the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) held in Ohrid, Macedonia, in 2014. The focus of this ASI was the arithmetic of superelliptic curves and their application in different scientific areas, including whether all the applications of hyperelliptic curves, such as cryptography, mathematical physics, quantum computation and diophantine geometry, can be carried over to the superelliptic curves. Additional papers have been added which provide some background for readers who were not at the conference, with the intention of making the book logically more complete and easier to read, but familiarity with the basic facts of algebraic geometry, commutative algebra and number theory are assumed. The book is divided into three sections. The first part deals with superelliptic curves with regard to complex numbers, the automorphisms group and the corresponding Hurwitz loci. The second part of the book focuses on the arithmetic of the subject, while the third addresses some of the applications of superelliptic curves.

Automorphism Groups of Compact Bordered Klein Surfaces by Emilio Bujalance,Jose J. Etayo,Jose M. Gamboa,Grzegorz Gromadzki Pdf

This research monograph provides a self-contained approach to the problem of determining the conditions under which a compact bordered Klein surface S and a finite group G exist, such that G acts as a group of automorphisms in S. The cases dealt with here take G cyclic, abelian, nilpotent or supersoluble and S hyperelliptic or with connected boundary. No advanced knowledge of group theory or hyperbolic geometry is required and three introductory chapters provide as much background as necessary on non-euclidean crystallographic groups. The graduate reader thus finds here an easy access to current research in this area as well as several new results obtained by means of the same unified approach.

Higher Genus Curves in Mathematical Physics and Arithmetic Geometry by Andreas Malmendier,Tony Shaska Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Higher Genus Curves and Fibrations in Mathematical Physics and Arithmetic Geometry, held on January 8, 2016, in Seattle, Washington. Algebraic curves and their fibrations have played a major role in both mathematical physics and arithmetic geometry. This volume focuses on the role of higher genus curves; in particular, hyperelliptic and superelliptic curves in algebraic geometry and mathematical physics. The articles in this volume investigate the automorphism groups of curves and superelliptic curves and results regarding integral points on curves and their applications in mirror symmetry. Moreover, geometric subjects are addressed, such as elliptic 3 surfaces over the rationals, the birational type of Hurwitz spaces, and links between projective geometry and abelian functions.

Birational Geometry, Kähler–Einstein Metrics and Degenerations by Ivan Cheltsov,Xiuxiong Chen,Ludmil Katzarkov,Jihun Park Pdf

This book collects the proceedings of a series of conferences dedicated to birational geometry of Fano varieties held in Moscow, Shanghai and Pohang The conferences were focused on the following two related problems: • existence of Kähler–Einstein metrics on Fano varieties • degenerations of Fano varieties on which two famous conjectures were recently proved. The first is the famous Borisov–Alexeev–Borisov Conjecture on the boundedness of Fano varieties, proved by Caucher Birkar (for which he was awarded the Fields medal in 2018), and the second one is the (arguably even more famous) Tian–Yau–Donaldson Conjecture on the existence of Kähler–Einstein metrics on (smooth) Fano varieties and K-stability, which was proved by Xiuxiong Chen, Sir Simon Donaldson and Song Sun. The solutions for these longstanding conjectures have opened new directions in birational and Kähler geometries. These research directions generated new interesting mathematical problems, attracting the attention of mathematicians worldwide. These conferences brought together top researchers in both fields (birational geometry and complex geometry) to solve some of these problems and understand the relations between them. The result of this activity is collected in this book, which contains contributions by sixty nine mathematicians, who contributed forty three research and survey papers to this volume. Many of them were participants of the Moscow–Shanghai–Pohang conferences, while the others helped to expand the research breadth of the volume—the diversity of their contributions reflects the vitality of modern Algebraic Geometry.

Symmetries of Compact Riemann Surfaces by Emilio Bujalance,Emilio Bujalance García,Francisco Javier Cirre,José Manuel Gamboa,Grzegorz Gromadzki Pdf

This monograph deals with symmetries of compact Riemann surfaces. A symmetry of a compact Riemann surface S is an antianalytic involution of S. It is well known that Riemann surfaces exhibiting symmetry correspond to algebraic curves which can be defined over the field of real numbers. In this monograph we consider three topics related to the topology of symmetries, namely the number of conjugacy classes of symmetries, the numbers of ovals of symmetries and the symmetry types of Riemann surfaces.

Singularities, Algebraic Geometry, Commutative Algebra, and Related Topics by Gert-Martin Greuel,Luis Narváez Macarro,Sebastià Xambó-Descamps Pdf

This volume brings together recent, original research and survey articles by leading experts in several fields that include singularity theory, algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. The motivation for this collection comes from the wide-ranging research of the distinguished mathematician, Antonio Campillo, in these and related fields. Besides his influence in the mathematical community stemming from his research, Campillo has also endeavored to promote mathematics and mathematicians' networking everywhere, especially in Spain, Latin America and Europe. Because of his impressive achievements throughout his career, we dedicate this book to Campillo in honor of his 65th birthday. Researchers and students from the world-wide, and in particular Latin American and European, communities in singularities, algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, coding theory, and other fields covered in the volume, will have interest in this book.

Topics in Infinite Group Theory by Benjamin Fine,Anja Moldenhauer,Gerhard Rosenberger,Leonard Wienke Pdf

This book gives an advanced overview of several topics in infinite group theory. It can also be considered as a rigorous introduction to combinatorial and geometric group theory. The philosophy of the book is to describe the interaction between these two important parts of infinite group theory. In this line of thought, several theorems are proved multiple times with different methods either purely combinatorial or purely geometric while others are shown by a combination of arguments from both perspectives. The first part of the book deals with Nielsen methods and introduces the reader to results and examples that are helpful to understand the following parts. The second part focuses on covering spaces and fundamental groups, including covering space proofs of group theoretic results. The third part deals with the theory of hyperbolic groups. The subjects are illustrated and described by prominent examples and an outlook on solved and unsolved problems.

Singularities in Geometry, Topology, Foliations and Dynamics by José Luis Cisneros-Molina,Dũng Tráng Lê,Mutsuo Oka,Jawad Snoussi Pdf

This book features state-of-the-art research on singularities in geometry, topology, foliations and dynamics and provides an overview of the current state of singularity theory in these settings. Singularity theory is at the crossroad of various branches of mathematics and science in general. In recent years there have been remarkable developments, both in the theory itself and in its relations with other areas. The contributions in this volume originate from the “Workshop on Singularities in Geometry, Topology, Foliations and Dynamics”, held in Merida, Mexico, in December 2014, in celebration of José Seade’s 60th Birthday. It is intended for researchers and graduate students interested in singularity theory and its impact on other fields.
