After-School Programs to Promote Child and Adolescent Development by Institute of Medicine,National Research Council,Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education,Board on Children, Youth, and Families,Committee on Community-Level Programs for Youth Pdf

This report summarizes the presentations and discussion at a workshop entitled Opportunities to Promote Child and Adolescent Development During the After-School Hours, convened on October 21, 1999. The workshop was organized by the Board on Children, Youth, and Families and its Forum on Adolescence of the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine, with funding from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. This workshop brought together policy makers, researchers, and practitioners to examine research on the developmental needs of children and adolescentsâ€"ages 5 to 14 yearsâ€"and the types of after-school programs designed to promote the health and development of these young people. Intended to provide a forum for discussion among the various stakeholders, the workshop did not generate conclusions about the types of programs that are most effective, nor did it generate specific recommendations about after-school programs or promote a particular approach. The workshop coincided with release of the Packard Foundation's fall 1999 issue of The Future of Children, entitled "When School Is Out." Focusing on after-school programs, the journal provided some context for the workshop, providing a backdrop for discussing the importance of after-school programs, the types of programs that exist across the country, and the policy climate that surrounds after-school programs. This report summarizes the workshop.

25 Brilliant and Cool After School Activities by Cammie Graber Pdf

After school activities are the rage of the day. With about $500 million invested in these programs and more than 10 million children attending them in America alone, the popularity of these activities cannot be overlooked. Everyone understands the need to develop new skills, gain more knowledge and keep the children safe when parents are working. The most important factor in the success of any program is the relationship between the children participating in the program and the adult members who work with these children. Often, children may confide in an adult member who is not a teacher. This kind of emotional interaction is a must when children are struggling to make sense of the whirlpool of emotions that assail them.Direct contact with professionals can be an inspiring experience. Children are very much impressed by the knowledge and experience of these adults. Young people gain a lot of knowledge and experience when they deal with experienced adults and older youth who serve as teachers or mentors in these programs. These mentors are different from the teachers in the school and children are more likely to draw inspiration from them. After school activities that are managed professionally by people who are successful in their own fields of expertise will produce children who are more enthusiastic and successful. Meaningful interaction with adults is a learning experience in itself.

Maybe you just want to treat yourself to a nice vacation or a new car without feeling guilty about it. Maybe you're looking for a way out of the corporate world, an escape plan. That's the ultimate financial freedom, right? That's how I got started down this entrepreneurial path, and it's the best choice I ever made. You're willing to work for it because your future is worth working for.But your time is limited, and you may not know where to start. Real-World ExamplesThis book offers real-world examples of how regular people just like you and me are earning side hustle income outside of traditional employment. Many have even turned these part-time ventures into full-time businesses, throwing off the shackles of their corporate overlords for good. And the cool thing is, there are no special technical skills or prerequisites to get started with any of the ideas presented. Most don't require any big scary upfront investment. (If you're a fan of Chris Guillebeau, Pat Flynn, or Tim Ferriss, you'll love this!)Why Side Hustle?> Build Skills Build Security Build Income Build Freedom My StoryAfter college, I did what you're supposed to do: I got a job.The problem was almost immediately I found myself looking for a way out. It wasn't that I hated the work or my coworkers, but it just wasn't what I wanted to do with my life. The thought of spending my next 30 years there was terrifying. So evenings and weekends I turned my attention online. I'd been dabbling with building rudimentary websites, learning online advertising channels, and even running my own small marketing campaigns for other companies' products to test the waters. And that's what The Side Hustle is about-finding a low-risk way make more money. Most entrepreneurship books assume you have limitless time and limitless startup capital, but I know from talking to thousands of side hustlers, that's simply not the reality. I started small and lean, but steadily built up my side hustle until I could say good-bye to corporate work. You can do it, too. I'll show you how. What's Inside? If you're looking for a get-rich-quick-scheme or the secret to overnight success, you won't find it here. Beginning to Read by Marilyn Jager Adams Pdf

Beginning to Read reconciles the debate that has divided theorists for decades over what is the "right" way to help children learn to read. Beginning to Read reconciles the debate that has divided theorists for decades over the "right" way to help children learn to read. Drawing on a rich array of research on the nature and development of reading proficiency, Adams shows educators that they need not remain trapped in the phonics versus teaching-for-meaning dilemma. She proposes that phonics can work together with the whole language approach to teaching reading and provides an integrated treatment of the knowledge and process involved in skillful reading, the issues surrounding their acquisition, and the implications for reading instruction.
