This open access edited volume is a comparative effort to discern the short-term educational impact of the covid-19 pandemic on students, teachers and systems in Brazil, Chile, Finland, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. One of the first academic comparative studies of the educational impact of the pandemic, the book explains how the interruption of in person instruction and the variable efficacy of alternative forms of education caused learning loss and disengagement with learning, especially for disadvantaged students. Other direct and indirect impacts of the pandemic diminished the ability of families to support children and youth in their education. For students, as well as for teachers and school staff, these included the economic shocks experienced by families, in some cases leading to food insecurity and in many more causing stress and anxiety and impacting mental health. Opportunity to learn was also diminished by the shocks and trauma experienced by those with a close relative infected by the virus, and by the constrains on learning resulting from students having to learn at home, where the demands of schoolwork had to be negotiated with other family necessities, often sharing limited space. Furthermore, the prolonged stress caused by the uncertainty over the resolution of the pandemic and resulting from the knowledge that anyone could be infected and potentially lose their lives, created a traumatic context for many that undermined the necessary focus and dedication to schoolwork. These individual effects were reinforced by community effects, particularly for students and teachers living in communities where the multifaceted negative impacts resulting from the pandemic were pervasive. The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of School-age Children and Adolescents with the Loss of In-person Learning and Socialization by Sheri Harber Pdf
This phenomenological study highlighted the perceived mental health effects on school-age children and adolescents because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The people directly impacted by this problem were the students, with parents and educators being indirectly impacted. The study examined the perceptions of teachers who witnessed perceived mental health issues in their students. The guiding theoretical framework used for this dissertation included the social psychological theories for loneliness and interdependence. The sample of participants included elementary, middle and high school teachers who met the requirements for the study. Each teacher selected participated in an interview, which the researcher transcribed and coded using the phenomenological approach. The shared experiences from the teachers were to assist parents, educators and mental health counselors to understand the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on students. The results in relation to the research questions showed that there were perceived prevalent mental health issues associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and loss of in-person learning. Future practice should include schools and communities that develop school programs, family support programs and a system to identify students who are still suffering mental health issues from the pandemic.

Uncorrected refractive errors are a significant cause of impaired vision and blindness in most world populations. During early childhood, uncorrected refractive errors may affect visual development and result in amblyopia. The largest burden of refractive error is myopia which significantly increases the risk of blinding conditions such as myopic macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataract. High myopia poses greater risks than mild or moderate myopia. Epidemiological research and advocacy have positioned uncorrected refractive errors on the global health agenda as a major public health issue. However, more research is needed to determine the full extent of the threat posed by refractive errors, to establish effective interventions and to consolidate prevention methods.
This monograph evaluates public policy responses to the Covid-19 pandemic through a public choice lens. The book compares two prominent, albeit mutually exclusive, theories in social sciences—public interest theory and public choice theory—and explores how their predictions perform within the framework of the Covid-19 pandemic. The chapters present different pandemic policies alongside empirical data in order to draw conclusions about their efficacy, and, in turn, draw conclusions about the veracity of each theory. By the end of the volume, the reader will be able to draw their own conclusions about whether the pandemic policy responses served the public interest, as public interest theory suggests, or the personal interests of the politicians who implemented them, as public choice theory holds.
