Overcoming Through the Spirit by Gregory Spalding Pdf

In his book “Overcoming Through the Spirit” the author shows the world of today to be no different than the world in the time of the apostles. The Apostle John wrote, “the whole world lieth in wickedness” (1 John 5:19) Today there is also false doctrines, false prophets and teachers, and people in all nations proclaiming themselves to be something they are not. The foremost reason I have written this book is that I was deeply impressed by God to write this book and entitle it “Overcoming through the Spirit.” I began a writing ministry in September of 1994 that is continuing at present writing articles for the church bulletin based on the messages preached by the ministry. These articles comprise most of the essential doctrines on a Christian's overcoming faith. When adding a comment from a church bulletin article on a particular thought, I reference it with an endnote. While a book instructing someone to overcome and have victory in their life is needful, experiential knowledge is the best teacher and way to learn the art of overcoming through the help of the Spirit and the word of God. I desire that this book be a great source to all who read it on maintaining an upright spirit and living for God in truth and holiness through the Spirit and word of Jesus Christ working in their hearts (Philippians 2:13).

Ignite Your Spirit by Shakti Durga Pdf

Through humour and clearly explained concepts, Ignite Your Spirit explains what it means to be spiritual. It introduces the idea that to be truly happy and healthy, we need to look at ourselves multi-dimensionally. That simply means that we are much more than just our physical body: a combination of cells held together. We are also made up of our Mind, Energy, Soul and the divine spark (however you define the 'divine'). Author and popular teacher and speaker, Shakti Durga, shows us how problems, blockages and imbalances in any one of those 'dimensions' can cause many of the problems we experience in life. This book will help you to gain a deeper understanding of how and why it's important to maintain 'energetic' health and how this can often be the key to unlocking your spirit and feeling great. The book provides tools, exercises and strategies to help the reader to 'ignite' their spirit and feel great!

The Scientific Spirit of American Humanism by Stephen P. Weldon Pdf

The story of how prominent liberal intellectuals reshaped American religious and secular institutions to promote a more democratic, science-centered society. Recent polls show that a quarter of Americans claim to have no religious affiliation, identifying instead as atheists, agnostics, or "nothing in particular." A century ago, a small group of American intellectuals who dubbed themselves humanists tread this same path, turning to science as a major source of spiritual sustenance. In The Scientific Spirit of American Humanism, Stephen P. Weldon tells the fascinating story of this group as it developed over the twentieth century, following the fortunes of a few generations of radical ministers, academic philosophers, and prominent scientists who sought to replace traditional religion with a modern, liberal, scientific outlook. Weldon explores humanism through the networks of friendships and institutional relationships that underlay it, from philosophers preaching in synagogues and ministers editing articles of Nobel laureates to magicians invoking the scientific method. Examining the development of an increasingly antagonistic engagement between religious conservatives and the secular culture of the academy, Weldon explains how this conflict has shaped the discussion of science and religion in American culture. He also uncovers a less known—but equally influential—story about the conflict within humanism itself between two very different visions of science: an aspirational, democratic outlook held by the followers of John Dewey on the one hand, and a skeptical, combative view influenced by logical positivism on the other. Putting America's distinctive science talk into historical perspective, Weldon shows how events such as the Pugwash movement for nuclear disarmament, the ongoing evolution controversies, the debunking of pseudo-science, and the selection of scientists and popularizers like Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov as humanist figureheads all fit a distinctly American ethos. Weldon maintains that this secular ethos gained much of its influence by tapping into the idealism found in the American radical religious tradition that includes the deism of Thomas Paine, nineteenth-century rationalism and free thought, Protestant modernism, and most important, Unitarianism. Drawing on archival research, interviews, and a thorough study of the main humanist publications, The Scientific Spirit of American Humanism reveals a new level of detail about the personal and institutional forces that have shaped major trends in American secular culture. Significantly, the book shows why special attention to American liberal religiosity remains critical to a clear understanding of the scientific spirit in American culture.

Dirt, Greed and Sex by William Countryman Pdf

Conducting a thorough examination of sexual ethics in the New Testament, this work argues that the New Testament writers did not construct a new sexual ethic from the ground up, but took over existing cultural patterns and refocused them, pushing some elements from the centre to the periphery. This suggests a pattern of ethics for contemporary life. Discussing biblical notions of purity and property, which dominate ethical ideas in the New Testament, the author characterizes sex as one of the rich blessings of creation, "to be received with delight and thanksgiving". Countryman's generous and eirenic views on sexual matters, based as they are on solid biblical research, are a welcome intervention in an area which unfortunately, in Christian circles, tends still to be dominated by conservatism and misinformation, rather than by liberal principle.
