Much fear of sharks is driven by media reports or films that sensationalize shark attacks, despite the rarity of such occurrences. With contributors ranging from Briony Penn to David Suzuki, Gary Geddes and Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, this collection provides the most accurate and up-to-date information on chondrichthyans in British Columbia waters, including detailed species descriptions and identification information. Sharks, Skates, Rays and Chimeras of British Columbia presents sharks and their relatives as valuable members of our coastal fish community, worthy of respect, study, admiration, and protection.

Sharks of the Pacific Northwest by Alessandro De Maddalena,Antonella Preti,Tarik Polansky Pdf

Those who think of sharks as something only found in tropical waters will be surprised to learn that there are 18 species of sharks in the cool waters of the Pacific Northwest, from the 27-inch brown catshark to the 39-foot basking shark. Sharks of the Pacific Northwest provides for the identification of these species, with spectacular photographs and accurate paintings and drawings, plus summaries of the sharks' classification, morphology, distribution, habitat, diet, reproduction and behaviour. It also includes a concise general account of shark evolution, anatomy and physiology, as well as discussion of attacks on humans and details of shark fisheries. It is primarily aimed at a broad, non-technical readership, but its up-to-date and detailed contents make it a useful tool for professional biologists and zoologists.

Basking Sharks by Scott Wallace,Brian Gisborne Pdf

The basking shark, a fish the size of a London bus, used to appear off the BC coast every spring. During World War II, the fish became a nuisance to commercial nets and fishing trollers. Gliding just below the surface, the basking shark was an easy target for a new pest eradication program that touted killing one of the plankton-eating monsters as great sport. By 1970, the basking shark was virtually eradicated in BC. Now researchers Scott Wallace and Brian Gisborne have pieced together what there is to know about this locally extinct ocean denizen. Basking Sharks is Number 14 in the Transmontanus series of books edited by Terry Glavin.

Shadows in the Sea by Harold W. McCormick Pdf

Captain Young and I for some years have been gathering material from all over the world about the Selachians-the Sharks, Skates, Rays, and their allies -of which there are more than 600 known species. We originally intended merely to up-date Captain Young's book ''Shark!! Shark!!'''' (published by Gotham House in 1934, and now a collector's item), but, as the material ever expanded, it was decided that an entirely new book, covering a much broader field, was needed. Adaterial was collected from all over the world for many years. When Captain Young and I felt that the research was nearly completed, we called upon Tom Allen, an experienced newspaperman, to aid us in transforming the research material into a book. Tom and I continued the research up to (and beyond!) the completion of the manuscript. Tom also did further research and added new material in the course of writing the book. In all scientific classifications, the Selachians are separated clearly from the Teleosteans, or Bony Fishes, and there are even leading ichthyologists \\ ho do not regard the former as fishes at all but rather as representing a separate and distinct Class of animal life...
