Short-Period Binary Stars: Observations, Analyses, and Results by Eugene F. Milone,Denis A. Leahy,David W. Hobill Pdf

This book explores cataclysmic variables with and without strong, overpowering magnetic fields. You’ll read about stars with densities ranging from that of the Sun to the degenerate matter of white dwarfs to the ultra-compact states of neutron stars and black holes. One of the objects examined and discussed is the Double Pulsar, highlighting what observations have told us about fundamental physics.

Eclipsing Binary Stars: Modeling and Analysis by Josef Kallrath,Eugene F. Milone Pdf

Astronomers learn much of what they know about the mass, brightness, and size of stars by observing binary systems, in which two stars orbit each other, periodically cutting off the others light. This book provides astronomers with a guide to specifying an astrophysical model for a set of observations, selecting an algorithm to determine the parameters of the model, and estimating the errors of the parameters.

Intermittent and Transient Behavior in Cygnus X-1 and GRS 1915+105 X-ray Emission by Daniel V. Engovatov Pdf

Much work has been done on trying to gain insight into the dynamics of accreting systems, such as black hole and neutron star binaries, by analyzing timing measurements from X-ray telescopes. In this thesis we present a novel approach to this problem using a kurtosis measure of the wavelet distribution obtained from the light curve to quantify the presence of intermittent activity. This method is applied to large RXTE data sets for GRS 1915+105, and Cygnus X-1. We demonstrate a new approach to reveal bursting modes. Negative correlation between the presence of a low frequency QPO in the Cygnus X-1 Fourier power spectrum and a wavelet kurtosis indicator of temporal intermittency is observed. A possible interpretation of this anti-correlation is developed using a "dripping handrail" transient chaos model.

Critical Observations Versus Physical Models for Close Binary Systems by Kam-Ching Leung Pdf

This book contains the proceedings of the second joint research program on close binary systems between the People's Republic of China and the United States. The planning for the double stars conference developed gradually through several years of close cooperation between astronomers of the PRC and the US. Topics covered include interacting am binaries, H-alpha emission and polarization of RS CVn stars, observational approach to close binary evolution, the role of polarimetry in understanding close binary stars and their interactions, physical models for close binaries and logical constraints, and accretion disks in dwarf novae.

Literature 1983, Part 1 by S. Böhme,Prof. Dr. Walter Fricke,H. Hefele,I. Heinrich,W. Hofmann,D. Krahn,V. R. Matas,Dr. Lutz D. Schmadel,G. Zech Pdf

Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documen tation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysics, and their border fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 33 records literature published in 1983 and received before August 1, 1983. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are included too. We acknowledge with thanks contributions of our colleagues all over the world. We also express our gratitude to all organizations, observatories, and publishers which provide us with complimentary copies of their publications. Starting with Volume 33, all the recording, correction, and data processing work was done by means of computers. The recording was done by our technical staff members Ms. Helga Ballmann, Ms. Mona El-Choura, Ms. Monika Kohl, and Ms. Sylvia Matyssek. Mr. Martin Schlotelburg and Mr. Ulrich Uberall supported our task by careful proofreading. It is a pleasure to thank them all for their encouragement. Literature 1989, Part 1 by Astronomisches Rechen-Institut Pdf

From the reviews: "Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969 and it has already become one of the fundemental publications in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and neighbouring sciences. It is the most important English-language abstracting journal in the mentioned branches. ...The abstracts are classified under more than a hundred subject categories, thus permitting a quick survey of the whole extended material. The AAA is a valuable and important publication for all students and scientists working in the fields of astronomy and related sciences. As such it represents a necessary ingredient of any astronomical library all over the world." Space Science Review# "Dividing the whole field plus related subjects into 108 categories, each work is numbered and most are accompanied by brief abstracts. Fairly comprehensive cross-referencing links relevant papers to more than one category, and exhaustive author and subject indices are to be found at the back, making the catalogues easy to use. The series appears to be so complete in its coverage and always less than a year out of date that I shall certainly have to make a little more space on those shelves for future volumes." Observing Variable Stars by Gerry A. Good Pdf

Observing variable stars is one of the major contributions amateur astronomers make to science. There are 36,000 variable stars listed in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars, so it is clearly impossible for the limited number of professional observatories to target even the majority of them. That's where amateur astronomers come in - thousands of them turning their telescopes to the sky every night. Variable star observing is the most popular of "real science" activities for amateurs, and Gerry Good's book provides everything needed. The first part of the book provides a highly detailed account of the various classes of variable star, with examples, illustrations and physical descriptions. The second section covers practical aspects of observing, everything from preparation and planning, through observing techniques, to data management and reduction.

Parameter Determination of a Binary Star System by Fabian Prilasnig Pdf

Diploma Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Astronomy, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Graz, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The focus of this work about binary star systems is on model applications ans selections of an algorithm to determine the parameters of individual binaries. It consists of four major parts: a general introduction to the theory of binary stars; introductory material about spectroscopy and photometry; a description of IRAF (Imaging Reduction and Analysis Facility) - this is a software program which allows the reduction and the analysis of gathered data of astronomical objects - and its application on parameter determination of the binary system UV Leonis. Last but not least follows the presentation of the spectroscopical and photometrical results of this binary star system. The spectroscopical and photometrical results confirm that the components of the binary star system UV Leonis are main-sequence stars having the same spectral type as the Sun. From the radial velocity curves we can conclude that both components must be nearly spherical due to the sinusoidal shape of their radial velocity curves. The characteristics of their B and V light curves tell us that the orbital inclination is a little bit smaller than 90 because of the V-shaped eclipses. Our results agree with the results from the literature, while masses were spectroscopically determined here for the first time. Our value of the distance to UV Leo is consistent with trigonometric parallax from the Hipparcos mission but our error bar is smaller.
