The East India Company at Home, 1757-1857 by Margot Finn,Kate Smith Pdf

The East India Company at Home, 1757–1857 explores how empire in Asia shaped British country houses, their interiors and the lives of their residents. It includes chapters from researchers based in a wide range of settings such as archives and libraries, museums, heritage organisations, the community of family historians and universities. It moves beyond conventional academic narratives and makes an important contribution to ongoing debates around how empire impacted Britain. The volume focuses on the propertied families of the East India Company at the height of Company rule. From the Battle of Plassey in 1757 to the outbreak of the Indian Uprising in 1857, objects, people and wealth flowed to Britain from Asia. As men in Company service increasingly shifted their activities from trade to military expansion and political administration, a new population of civil servants, army officers, surveyors and surgeons journeyed to India to make their fortunes. These Company men and their families acquired wealth, tastes and identities in India, which travelled home with them to Britain. Their stories, the biographies of their Indian possessions and the narratives of the stately homes in Britain that came to house them, frame our explorations of imperial culture and its British legacies.

Silver Wonders from the East by Maria Menshikova,Jet Pijzel-Dommisse Pdf

Filigree is a remarkable method in jewellery-making in which very pure precious metal is drawn into extremely fine threads. These threads are then ingeniously inter-woven to produce almost transparent objects. This book presents for the first time the highlights from the magnificent and unique filigree collection in the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg. The principal centres of filigree were to be found in China, and Chinese filigree found its way to the countries which traded with China in the 16th and 17th centuries: Portugal, Spain, The Netherlands and England. Production centres also developed in India. The Hermitage collection has a large number of works in eastern filigree from the 17th and 18th centuries, mainly from China, India and Indonesia. The 17th-century Chinese pieces are in traditional Chinese style and are ornamented with traditional Chinese motifs: peoonies, lotus flowers and plum blossom. The works from India were made to order for clients such as the Catholic Church, and are therefore European in form.Among the highlights of the collection are the two large toilet sets belonging to Catherine the Great, one from China and one from India. These are unique ensembles because over time comparable sets from other European courts have been sold, melted down or lost. Another object, the writing box of William of Orange, recently discovered in the Hermitage collection, provides an interesting link between the Russian and Dutch courts. The filigree collection of the tsars is the only royal filigree collection to have been preserved in its entirety, yet has received little scholarly attention to date. This publication will contribute to the further study of this unique collection and the issues surrounding it, and will introduce a new audience to the wonders of this Eastern silver.

However, the origins of this spectacular success and its effect on the region can actually be traced back to an earlier period of Asian history. In Japanese Industrialization and the Asian Economy the authors examine the factors which contributed to the period of major industrialization from 1870 to 1940. Comprising of nine chapters by eminent economic historians, Japanese Industrialization and the Asian Economyoffers a valuable guide to the origins of economic dynamism in the Pacific Rim.

Seven Wonders of Transportation by Ron Fridell Pdf

In every age, science and technology have advanced human civilization. From architecture to engineering, medicine to transportation, humans have invented extraordinary wonders. Transportation technology has seen significant changes over the centuries. Ancient people traveled on foot and on the backs of animals. People invented wheels and sailing ships, which helped them travel farther and carry larger loads. Fast forward to modern cars, subways, and airplanes and we’ll find that even the sky’s not the limit. In the twenty-first century, people are planning tourist flights into space. In this book, we’ll explore seven wonders of transportation. These wonders include roads and mass transit systems, including the ancient Silk Road, the London Underground, and the U.S. Interstate Highway System. The wonders also include vehicles such as bicycles, airplanes, spaceships, and the glorious ocean liner Queen Elizabeth II. The newest vehicles are “supergreen” cars, which save energy and help the environment. From the basic to the cutting edge, we’ll learn where transportation has been and where it’s headed.

Obama’S Wonder Years by James A. Yannes Pdf

This book contains a distillation of eight plus years of both financial and cultural factoids abstracted from a plethora of sources and was originally accumulated for the authors personal use. Friends have asked for copies so often that I decided to publish the material as the simplest solution and those that want copies can now get copies! The material is presented in factoid format (as accumulated by my self) over the 8 years from numerous sources, many with attribution. The core eight years (2008 - 2016) was a remarkable period in American history with continuous improvements in both the stock market and the employment picture.
