Silvicultural Systems for the Production of Energy Biomass in Conventional Operations in Atlantic Canada by Pierre Zundel,Canadian Forest Service. Science Branch Pdf

This report presents an analysis of silvicultural systems designed to produce energy biomass from conventional forestry operations in Atlantic Canada. It also analyzes policy changes and incentives that might make biomass energy more attractive in the region. This report also serves as a model for other stand-level studies of this type to be carried out in Canada, and therefore methodological issues such as the appropriate scale and point of view from which to evaluate biomass energy are discussed.

Proceedings of a Workshop on Forest Energy Production as a Means of Improving Silvicultural Practice by Canada. Forestry Canada Pdf

Task VI of the International Energy Agency's bioenergy agreement is concerned with biomass supply from conventional forestry. Within that context, a number of international activities have been undertaken. The objective of Activity 1 is to develop a state-of-the-art review of current forest management strategies and techniques used by participating countries to produce wood for energy in conventional forestry systems. The proceedings of this workshop on forest energy production as a means of improving silvicultural practice are presented in the form of six papers from Canada, Sweden and the UK.

Silviculture Tuned to Nature and Wood Energy Production by Canadian Forest Service. Science and Sustainable Development Directorate Pdf

The workshop whose proceedings are presented in this document provided an opportunity to learn from scientific papers and field demonstrations how Swiss forest managers combine bioenergy production, silviculture, and nature. Topics of the papers provided in this document include Swiss forests and their bioenergy potential, Swiss silvicultural practice, biomass and wood energy harvesting, wood energy applications in Switzerland, harvesting and preparation of energy wood, economic evaluation of impacts from a biomass fuel market in Nova Scotia, the use of gray alder in hardwood plantation forestry, use of forestry as an energy source in the United Kingdom, and management practices for jack pine in Ontario.

Forest Biomass by T. Satoo,H.A. Madgwick Pdf

Lord Rutherford has said that all science is either physics or stamp collecting. On that basis the study of forest biomass must be classified with stamp collecting and other such pleasurable pursuits. Japanese scientists have led the world, not only in collecting basic data, but in their attempts to systematise our knowledge of forest biomass. They have studied factors affecting dry matter production of forest trees in an attempt to approach underlying phYf'ical principles. This edition of Professor Satoo's book has been made possible the help of Dr John F. Hosner and the Virginia Poly technical Institute and State University who invited Dr Satoo to Blacksburg for three months in 1973 at about the time when he was in the final stages of preparing the Japanese version. Since then the explosion of world literature on forest biomass has continued to be fired by increasing shortages of timber supplies in many parts of the world as well as by a need to explore renewable sources of energy. In revising the original text I have attempted to maintain the input of Japanese work - much of which is not widely available outside Japan - and to update both the basic information and, where necessary, the conclusions to keep them in tune with current thinking. Those familiar with the Japanese original will find Chapter 3 largely rewritten on the basis of new work - much of which was initiated while Dr Satoo was in Blacksburg.

Our Landscape Heritage by Vincent Frank Zelazny,New Brunswick. Department of Natural Resources,New Brunswick. Ecosystem Classification Working Group Pdf

Our Landscape Heritage provides an overview of the history and ecological makeup of the landscapes of New Brunswick to help ecological seekers starting out with basic knowledge about geology, soils, climate, and vegetation, to better understand why plants and animals are today distributed as they are. Part I outlines the rationale and history of ecological land classification (ELC) in New Brunswick, and presents basic scientific concepts and facts that help the reader to interpret the information that follows. Part II, Portrait of New Brunswick Ecoregions and Ecodistricts presents a detailed look at the variety and distribution of ecosystems across the geographic expanse of New Brunswick. Each of the seven chapters of Part II provides a high level description of the ecoregion, followed by detailed descriptions of each ecodistrict within the ecoregion.--Includes text from document.
