Love and the Fighting Female by Allison P. Palumbo Pdf

The fighting female archetype--a self-reliant woman of great physical prowess--has become increasingly common in action films and on television. However, the progressive female identities of these narratives cannot always resist the persistent and problematic framing of male-female relationships as a battle of the sexes or other source of antagonism. Combining cultural analysis with close readings of key popular American film and television texts since the 1980s, this study argues that certain fighting female themes question regressive conventions in male-female relationships. Those themes reveal potentially progressive ideologies regarding female agency in mass culture that reassure audiences of the desirability of empowered women while also imagining egalitarian intimacies that further empower women. Overall, the fighting female narratives addressed here afford contradictory viewing pleasures that reveal both new expectations for and remaining anxieties about the "strong, independent woman" ideal that emerged in American popular culture post-feminism.

My First Snow of Winter by Bhawna Pdf

“How do you fall in love with someone? How do you feel when it happens? Do you smile whole day or do you realise that there is a beatbox inside you which plays the sweet songs whenever you see the one? For me it was just like a fairytale… I know most of us do not believe in magic, but I do…love is so magical when it happens with the right person, when it builds slowly, when it makes everything disappear except the love itself! But… I do have fear, I have fear that what if one day…my love story won’t have a happy ending? What if I have to see it going away and disappearing in front of my eyes? What if I’d never get the chance to see the snowfall of my love? What if my wait…stays forever?”

What's funnier than true love? Dumb love, that's what. Kathleen Jeffrie Johnson offers an exuberant romp -- somewhere between a screwball comedy of errors and a modern fairy tale. In the tiny town of Brewerton, the minister needs an assistant for his Loney Hearts advice column, someone with a sympathetic, open heart and a confidential, closed mouth. Who better, Carlotta decides, than a Love Expert like herself. In fact, once Pete, her soon-to-be boyfriend -- he just doesn't know it yet -- gets a look at her, she'll be the syrup on his pancake, the cream in his coffee, the crabcake at his clam bake! All she has to do is get rid of her competition: Bernice, Andrea...and Fate.

A History of Japanese Literature, Volume 3 by Jin'ichi Konishi Pdf

In this third of five volumes tracing the history of Japanese literature through Mishima Yukio, Jin'ichi Konishi portrays the high medieval period. Here he continues to examine the influence of Chinese literature on Japanese writers, addressing in particular reactions to Sung ideas, Zen Buddhism, and the ideal of literary vocation, michi. This volume focuses on three areas in which Konishi has long made distinctive contributions: court poetry (waka), featuring twelfth-and thirteenth-century works, especially those of Fujiwara Teika (1162-1241); standard linked poetry (renga), from its inception to its full harvest in the work of Sogi (1421-1502); and the theatrical form noh, including the work of Zeami (ca. 1365-1443) and Komparu Zenchiku (1405-?). The author also considers prose narrative and popular song. Originally published in 1991.
