By using various data inputs, ubiquitous computing systems detect their current usage context, automatically adapt their services to the user’s situational needs and interact with other services or resources in their environment on an ad-hoc basis. Designing such self-adaptive, context-aware knowledge processing systems is, in itself, a formidable challenge. This book presents core findings from the VENUS project at the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Information System Design (ITeG) at Kassel University, where researchers from different fields, such as computer science, information systems, human-computer interaction and law, together seek to find general principles and guidelines for the design of socially aware ubiquitous computing systems. To this end, system usability, user trust in the technology and adherence to privacy laws and regulations were treated as particularly important criteria in the context of socio-technical system design. During the project, a comprehensive blueprint for systematic, interdisciplinary software development was developed, covering the particular functional and non-functional design aspects of ubiquitous computing at the interface between technology and human beings. The organization of the book reflects the structure of the VENUS work program. After an introductory part I, part II provides the groundwork for VENUS by presenting foundational results from all four disciplines involved. Subsequently, part III focuses on methodological research funneling the development activities into a common framework. Part IV then covers the design of the demonstrators that were built in order to develop and evaluate the VENUS method. Finally, part V is dedicated to the evaluation phase to assess the user acceptance of the new approach and applications. The presented findings are especially important for researchers in computer science, information systems, and human-computer interaction, but also for everyone working on the acceptance of new technologies in society in general.

The book marks the result of the IFIP WG 8. 2 conference on "Designing Ubiquitous Information Environments: Socio-Technical Issues and Challenges. " Since its inception in the late 1970s, IFIP WG 8. 2 has sought to understand how computer-based information systems interact and must be designed as an integrated part of the organizational design. At that time, information systems handled repetitive and remote back-office functions and the main concern was work task design for repetitive input tasks and the potential impact of improved information support on organizational decision-making and structure. The focus of the information system design shifted in the 1980s when computers became part of the furniture and moved into the office. Reflecting this significant change, IFIP WG 8. 2 in 1989 organized a conference dedicated to the design and impact of desktop technology in order to examine how organizational processes and the locus of action changed when the computer was moved into the office. Sixteen years later, we are experiencing another significant change. Computers are now becoming part of our body and sensory system and will move out of the traditional office locations and into the wilderness. Again, IFIP WG 8.

For a long time an automatic detection of contacts between humans was not possible. In this work a new generation of resource-aware RFID tags (proximity tags) is used which has the ability to detect reliable face-to-face contacts. This innovation opens up new research possibilities in the ?elds of human contact behaviour analysis, link prediction and indoor localisation. In this context the identi?cation of human contact structures and their underlying pro¬cesses is a prominent research topic. However, the analysis of of?ine social networks has been largely neglected. In this work face-to-face information is utilised to study the link prediction problem as well as dynamic and static contact patterns in face-to-face contact networks. Furthermore the in?uence of user interests and social contacts on the predictability of talk attendance is analysed. The localisation of humans in indoor environments is still a challenging problem. In literature, accurate positioning approaches exist. Unfortunately, these approaches requi¬re expensive hardware and an extensive deployment of suitable infrastructure. Therefo¬re novel approaches are presented that use proximity tags for positioning. All methods are evaluated using real-world data and it is shown that all approaches signi?cantly outperform state-of-the art indoor localisation approaches.
