Stealing Time by Monish Bhatia,Victoria Canning Pdf

This book draws together empirical contributions which focus on conceptualising the lived realities of time and temporality in migrant lives and journeys. This book uncovers the ways in which human existence is often overshadowed by legislative interpretations of legal and illegalised. It unearths the consequences of uncertainty and unknowing for people whose futures often lay in the hands of states, smugglers, traffickers and employers that pay little attention to the significance of individuals’ time and thus, by default, their very human existence. Overall, the collection draws perspectives from several disciplines and locations to advance knowledge on how temporal exclusion relates to social and personal processes of exclusion. It begins by conceptualising what we understand by ‘time’ and looks at how temporality and lived realities of time combine for people during and after processes of migration. As the book develops, focus is trained on temporality and survival during encampment, border transgression, everyday borders and hostility, detention, deportation and the temporal impacts of border deaths. This book both conceptualises and realises the lived experiences of time with regard to those who are afforded minimal autonomy over their own time: people living in and between borders.

Stealing Through Time by Jack Seabrook Pdf

The writings of twentieth-century author Jack Finney are classic contributions to the genres of science fiction and suspense thrillers in American literature. Two of Finney's novels, The Body Snatchers and Good Neighbor Sam, became the basis of popular films, but it was his time-travel story Time and Again (1970) that won him a devoted following. The novel about an advertising artist who travels back to the New York of the 1880s quickly became a cult favorite, celebrated especially by New Yorkers for its rich descriptions of life in the city at that time. The year of his death, Finney finished the sequel, From Time to Time (1995). In 1955 he published The Body Snatchers, a chilling tale of aliens who emerge from pods in the guise of humans. Many critics interpreted the insidious infiltration by aliens as a cold war allegory that dramatized America's looming fear of a communist invasion, and the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers was remade twice. Over the course of his career, Finney wrote ten novels, more than 50 short stories, two plays, and a work of nonfiction, all of which are presented and discussed in this book. Also, reproduced in full and analyzed is a series of letters exchanged between Finney and various persons associated with his alma mater, Knox College. These letters give rare insight into Finney's character and demonstrate his personal interest in some of the themes that recur in his fiction. This work begins with an overview of Finney's life and career, presents a complete assessment of the author's works, and concludes with a look at the various ways that Finney's works have been adapted for the stage, television, and film. Also included is the first comprehensive list of Jack Finney's writings ever published.

The Art of Stealing Time by Louis Andriessen Pdf

The Dutch composer, Louis Andriessen, has been writing and talking about his own work and everything which is directly, indirectly, or nothing at all to do with it, for many years now and The Art of Stealing Time is a collection of these articles, lectures and interviews. Andriessen talks about his childhood memories, his literary and cinematic preferences, colleagues he admires and ensembles he has established. He also talks about his own work, from De Staat [The Republic], the piece with which, twenty-five years ago, he changed the face of the musical landscape in the Netherlands up to and including the last opera he created with Peter Greenaway, Writing to Vermeer. Andriessen's style is informal, direct and always engaging, and through his use of anecdote, he is able to convey complex ideas to the widest of audiences, musicians and non-musicians alike. Controversial, funny, stimulating and thought-provoking, The Art of Stealing Time gives us a unique insight into the mind and working methods of one of the most significant composers alive today. This is, without doubt, a book to return to again and again.
