Study On Chinese Traditional Theory Of Artistic Style by Jiaxiang Hu Pdf

The book features an in-depth analysis of pre-modern Chinese discourses on artistic style especially the concept of Vitality-Charm (氣韻). Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the book examines Vitality-Charm and related topics from the perspectives of aesthetics, stylistics, semiotics, cosmology, art history, and socio-cultural history. It reviews the development of, and examines the relations between, the concepts of poetic vision, spiritual resonance, spiritual expressiveness, Vitality-Charm and so on in the tradition of Chinese art (including literature, music, dancing, and drama). The book also attempts to clarify confusions caused by the overlapping and indistinct demarcations between the concepts when they are used in the discourse of, and even the training of art — especially traditional Chinese art.

Issues of Contemporary Art and Aesthetics in Chinese Context by Eva Kit Wah Man Pdf

This book discusses how China’s transformations in the last century have shaped its arts and its philosophical aesthetics. For instance, how have political, economic and cultural changes shaped its aesthetic developments? Further, how have its long-standing beliefs and traditions clashed with modernizing desires and forces, and how have these changes materialized in artistic manifestations? In addition to answering these questions, this book also brings Chinese philosophical concepts on aesthetics into dialogue with those of the West, making an important contribution to the fields of art, comparative aesthetics and philosophy.

Philosophy of Chinese Art by Zhu Zhirong Pdf

This title provides a systematic examination of the philosophy of Chinese art, exploring the peculiarity of artistic forms and distinctive conceptions and artistic principles of Chinese art which are grounded in the life awareness of the ancient Chinese and interconnect with the Chinese philosophy of life. Synthesizing Chinese theories of art with Western philosophical systems, the book is organized into five parts: (1) the subject, the actor who creates, appreciates, and criticizes artistic works; (2) ontological aspects, that is, the artwork per se and the dynamic process of creation; (3) aesthetic traits, the organic whole constituted by rhythm, meter, the principle of harmony, and space-time awareness; (4) artistic representation, which is manifested in the rhythm of vital energy, momentum of genre, vigour of style, and taste and inclination; and (5) the evolution of Chinese art. Based on this structural thread, the author looks into the interwoven relationship between the philosophy of Chinese art and ancient Chinese thought in terms of the spirit of life, nature–human relations, and ontological awareness of human-centredness. The book will appeal to scholars, students, and general readers interested in aesthetics, art theory, art philosophy, Chinese art, and ancient Chinese culture.

Dimensions of Originality by Katharine P Burnett Pdf

This book investigates the issue of conceptual originality in art criticism of the seventeenth century, a period in which China dynamically reinvented itself. In art criticism, the term which was called upon to indicate conceptual originality more than any other was "qi", literally, "different"; but secondarily, "odd," like a number and by extension, "the novel," and "extraordinary." This work finds that originality, expressed through visual difference, was a paradigmatic concern of both artists and critics. Burnett speculates on why many have dismissed originality as a possible "traditional Chinese" value, and the ramifications this has had on art historical understanding. She further demonstrates that a study of individual key terms can reveal social and cultural values and provides a linear history of the increase in critical use of "qi" as "originality" from the fifth through the seventeenth centuries, exploring what originality looks like in artworks by members of the gentry elite and commoner classes, and explains how the value lost its luster at the end of the seventeenth century.

Basic Principles Of Chinese Philosophy (Volumes 1 & 2) by Jiaxiang Hu Pdf

Among world's three major philosophic traditions, Chinese philosophy excels in ethical discourse. As a collective wisdom on a par with Aristotle's 'Ethics' and Kant's 'Critique of Practical Reason', Chinese philosophy now needs to be systematized and developed. Today, Chinese philosophy per se has often been reduced to the historical approach to it, hence its slower development in comparison with European and Indian philosophies. The author of this book avails himself of Kant's model of human psychic structure, synthesizes the basic elements of Chinese philosophy into a rigorous theoretical framework, and presents a panoptic view of the edifice of traditional Chinese philosophy.

A CRITIQUE OF TRANSLATION THEORIES IN CHINESE TRADITION by HONGYIN WANG Pdf

A Critique of Translation Theories in Chinese Tradition: From Dao’an to Fu Lei represents an attempt to review traditional Chinese translation theories, covering an intellectual history of about 2,000 years from Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) in dynastic China up to contemporary China. Following an approach informed by the Western history of philosophy, this two-volume work makes detailed analysis and modern interpretation of ten major theories or theoretical argumentations, from the theory of Dao’an, an early Buddhist sutra translator and theorist, to that of Fu Lei, a contemporary Chinese translator of French literature. Throughout the critique in Volume One, a three-dimensional methodology is adopted in different theoretical contexts, that is, historical evaluation, theoretical explanation, and creative modern transformation of each theory, with regard to its basic propositions, concepts, and categories, from its classical form into a modern form. Presented in Volume Two is what the author has got in his exploration, by drawing on the traditional Chinese culture resources, into the modern Chinese translation theory now still in the making.
