Survival August-September 2021: Debating US Foreign Policy by The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Pdf

Survival, the IISS’s bimonthly journal, challenges conventional wisdom and brings fresh, often controversial, perspectives on strategic issues of the moment. In this issue: Daniel Deudney and G. John Ikenberry argue that liberal internationalism is more appropriate to contemporary global realities than the Quincy-coalition restraint James Crabtree explains why the West’s Build Back Better World partnership will be hard-pressed to compete with China’s Belt and Road Initiative Joelien Pretorius and Tom Sauer contend that if states are serious about nuclear disarmament, they should ditch the NPT and join the Ban Treaty instead Sameer Lalwani and Tyler Sagerstrom analyse what the India–Russia defence partnership means for US policy And eight more thought-provoking pieces, as well as our regular Book Reviews and Noteworthy column. The U.S. Navy and the Rise of Great Power Competition by James J. Wirtz,Jeffrey E. E. Kline,James A. A. Russell Pdf

This volume describes how technological and geo-political trends are rapidly transforming maritime affairs. A mix of original and previously published material, this volume describes how the 21st-century great power competition is changing the face of naval operations in general, and U.S. Navy operations in the Western Pacific in particular. The rise of an assertive China and its new anti-access and area-denial capabilities threaten the aircraft carrier-based maritime dominance of the U.S. Navy. Military and political trends in the Western Pacific and beyond suggest that the world is encountering a pivotal moment when existing weapons, tactics, and operations might be rendered obsolete by techno-strategic change. This volume considers these developments from three perspectives by describing: (1) the techno-strategic setting; (2) the institutional constraints that impede the ability of the U.S. Navy to respond to these changes; and (3) a new approach to naval force planning and strategy to cope with these developments. The volume culminates in a discussion of sophisticated strategies and operational concepts that position the U.S. Navy and its maritime allies and partners to prevail in today’s techno-strategic churn. This book will be of much interest to students of naval policy, strategic studies, Asia-Pacific politics, and International Relations.

The Characteristics of Pediatric Soft Tissue Sarcomas: Recent Advances in Management and Treatment by Jilong Yang,Shunbin Xiong Pdf

Sarcomas are forms of cancer that comprise tumors of the connective and structural tissue of the body and mainly affect children and young adults. Pediatric soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a heterogeneous group of malignant tumors constituting about 7% of all cancer cases. Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) constitute about half of all soft tissue sarcomas in children, the rest being constituted by non- rhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas (NRSTS). The estimated 5-year survival rate is around 65.6% in children and young adults, Rhabdomyosarcoma being as low as 59.2% in some cases.

Bioinformatics Analysis of Omics Data for Biomarker Identification in Clinical Research, Volume II by Lixin Cheng,Hongwei Wang,Shibiao Wan Pdf

This Research Topic is part of a series with, "Bioinformatics Analysis of Omics Data for Biomarker Identification in Clinical Research - Volume I" (https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/13816/bioinformatics-analysis-of-omics-data-for-biomarker-identification-in-clinical-research) The advances and the decreasing cost of omics data enable profiling of disease molecular features at different levels, including bulk tissues, animal models, and single cells. Large volumes of omics data enhance the ability to search for information for preclinical study and provide the opportunity to leverage them to understand disease mechanisms, identify molecular targets for therapy, and detect biomarkers of treatment response. Identification of stable, predictive, and interpretable biomarkers is a significant step towards personalized medicine and therapy. Omics data from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, metagenomics, and metabolomics help to determine biomarkers for prognostic and diagnostic applications. Preprocessing of omics data is of vital importance as it aims to eliminate systematic experimental bias and technical variation while preserving biological variation. Dozens of normalization methods for correcting experimental variation and bias in omics data have been developed during the last two decades, while only a few consider the skewness between different sample states, such as the extensive over-repression of genes in cancers. The choice of normalization methods determines the fate of identified biomarkers or molecular signatures. From these considerations, the development of appropriate normalization methods or preprocessing strategies may promote biomarker identification and facilitate clinical decision-making.
