This is the local name for a plant called Margosa-the Indian Neem. Its scientific name is Azadirachta indica. This is a long living tree, which has come down in Indian mythology as one of the gifts of the gods, given to the people of Jambudwipa- the prehistoric and historic name of the area which consisted of the Indian subcontinent. That is the reason why this plant is worshipped in many ancient traditional rituals of some religious sects in India. Neem twigs are used as a toothbrush, even today. You break off a twig, chew it to keep your teeth healthy and then brush your teeth with this chewed portion. It is definitely bitter in taste, but you never will ever have to visit a dentist. No Indian garden is considered to be complete without a Neem tree growing. The idea is that the grandfather is going to plant the Neem tree, and the future generations up to the seventh generation are going to derive benefit of this plant. That is why the first thing one does when one buys a new house is plant a Neem tree and then plant some other fruit trees like mangoes and lemons. The Neem tree used to grow wild, but it is now cultivated extensively throughout the land. It is estimated that there are about 138 million Neem trees cultivated by farmers in Neem plantations throughout India. We are not talking about the ones which grow completely wild in the forests and in the woods or in your gardens. There has been a long mythological history of the Neem, coming down the ages. Let me give you one example. The Neem grown on the outskirts of the village, would be worshipped by ancient villagers, who wanted the friendly spirits living on the Neem to grant them their wishes. That is why, they often fed the Neem with milk or buried copper coins underneath the Neem tree. I do not know who took advantage of the buried coins, but I saw this pattern being followed as an adult, when people got to know about the only Neem tree, in the locality, which happened to have been planted by my grandfather four decades earlier.

Intelligent and Active Packaging for Fruits and Vegetables by Charles L. Wilson, Ph.D. Pdf

Recent nationwide recalls of spinach due to E. coli contamination and peanut butter due to Salmonella, make the emerging development of "active" and "intelligent" packaging crucial for consumer safety and quality assurance. Now that it is possible to make packaging that can detect and inform consumers of contamination, as well as prevent or reduce the growth of human foodborne pathogens, the food packaging and safety industry needs a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-science and future directions of this widely important field. Drawing on the research of a diverse group of scientists and pioneers in the field, Intelligent and Active Packaging for Fruits and Vegetables explores the new technology and applications used to bring fresh, safe, nutritious produce to the consumer. It explains Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) and its use in packaging fruits and vegetables, as well as, fish and meat. It includes variations and advances on MAP such as high vapor-permeable films, and demonstrates modeling techniques to assist in the prediction and selection of packaging type. The book contains a chapter on the trends, opportunities, and challenges of RFID temperature monitoring in food packaging. It also considers the interaction between container and food product, as well as the use of non-toxic insect repellent plastics. There is a chapter on the regulatory implications of the use of nanotechnology in food packaging. Finally, the book discusses consumer perception, the specific needs of developing countries, and current implementation in Europe. Explaining the very latest in packaging technology and opening areas for future research, Intelligent and Active Packaging for Fruits and Vegetables provides an excellent knowledge base from which to revolutionize the delivery of safe and nutritious food.

Shakahaari by Pritpal Marwaha Pdf

The Cookbook with a New Twist! There are a lot of Vegetarians all over the world now, as compared to some couple of decades ago, when it was extremely difficult for a Vegetarian to even buy cookies or bread without eggs, wondering what was in the package! You could never really know about the quality and integrity of the contents within. Years ago, being Vegetarians was looked upon with disdain, frowned upon, and sometimes with very surprised looks, as if we were from another planet! It was unbelievable to them as to how a Vegetarian could even survive without meat! We grew up in five countries, and we were constantly on the move for a good 20 years. My father, Atma Singh, was a Diplomat in the Indian Foreign Service, and we did a lot of entertaining and partying, and needed great food – and lots of varieties, too! With my mom, Kuljit’s expert culinary skills, bless her generous heart, we churned out tons of mouth-watering sweet and savoury snacks and foods. I had a first hand experience with the culinary expert, my mom, who improvised and invented recipes. I was amazed that she had all the recipes in her memory, with the exact proportions. She was the darling and life of the party. We were the famous Indian Vegetarian Family! Many recipes in this Book are North Indian, some South Indian as well, with some great contributions from friends and family. We used to make our own fried snacks, homemade Ketchup, Pizzas, sweet and savoury snacks, and even potato chips, crunchies and fried munchies – which is now readily available in many local supermarkets and ethnic food stores. This Book contains wonderful recipes from friends and relatives, adapted to my own special version, which will be of great benefit to both Vegetarians and non-Vegetarians alike, and especially to new Vegetarians. Ofcourse, this book is for anyone and everyone, young and old alike, and especially the new generation.
