Principals by Marjorie Munroe,Nancy Love,Mel Blitzer Pdf

For school principals, there are many different routes to success, and there just as many ways to measure that success in a school. Principals introduces five high school principals with their own stories to tell about success and the challenges of managing mandated change. These personal portraits illustrate the myriad ways administrators respond to change and manage transitions. Created by the PULSE Institute of Calgary, Alberta, Principals shares the vignettes of five different principals in five situationsthe Impresario, the Sherpa, the Coach, the Rescuer, and the Gardener. They hail from varied settings ranging from a large suburban combined junior and senior Catholic school to a high school in a small remote community. This study shows how each principal successfully responded to change at the jurisdictional level around accountability in schools. Principals serves to incite dialogue regarding how to respond to mandated change and how other principals facing the same issues can apply these lessons in their own work and to their own realities.

Being a Successful Principal by David R. Schumaker,William A. Sommers Pdf

This book is for administrators, aspiring administrators, and those who are interested in how schools operate on a day-to-day basis. Many principals will recognize the stressors that are described and that typify a shared-leadership school. Chapter 1 focuses on communication as the foundational skill for all principals, a skill that entails as much listening as it does speaking. Chapter 2 emphasizes the need for principals to trust themselves and to trust others, both of which are important in a job that tends to isolate. The next two chapters focus on the need to be receptive to change and the need for principals to recognize that the classroom is not the only place to learn and that all of a school's resources should be used to provide a practical, real-life learning environment. Chapter 5 examines the need to be prepared for large-scale changes, whereas chapter 6 provides advice on mediating the inevitable conflicts that visit all schools. The last few chapters discuss the importance of exercising the power of the principal's office; how to assess students, staff, and schools; and the need to maintain balance in one's life. A final section offers anecdotes and tips for thriving in the difficult job that is called the principalship. (Contains 59 references and an index.) (RJM)

Do Teachers Wish to Be Agents of Change? by Allen Menlo,LeVerne Collet Pdf

This study surveyed principals and teachers in ten countries to compare principal and teacher attitudes toward the involvement of teachers in several change and development responsibilities. The participating countries were: Australia, Canada, China, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, and United States. Each country administered mirror versions of a questionnaire to samples of at least 50 principals and at least 100 teachers. The questionnaires listed twenty items describing change responsibilities in which teachers might become involved. For each item, both principals and teachers assigned two teacher involvement ratings: their personal preference, and their estimate of the preference of their role counterpart. These involvement ratings produced four dependent variables: Principal Preferences, Principal Estimates, Teacher Preferences, and Teacher Estimates. For each variable, item responses were clustered to form index sub-scores that measured attitudes toward five education domains: Administration and Coordination, Human Relations, Teacher Support, Classroom Learning, and Evaluation. Systematic planned comparisons were conducted to determine the most important principal-teacher issues within and between countries, and how issues change across index domains. Typical results indicate low awareness of each other’s aspirations and expectations. The first and last chapters of this book discuss the potential of teacher leaders to become agents of change within their own schools. Several social-psychological competencies are then described for these teachers in their work.

Preparing Principals for a Changing World by Linda Darling-Hammond,Debra Meyerson,Michelle LaPointe,Margaret T. Orr Pdf

Preparing Principals for a Changing World provides a hands-on resource for creating and implementing effective policies and programs for developing expert school leaders. Written by acclaimed author and educator Linda Darling-Hammond and experts Debra Meyerson, Michelle LaPointe, and Margaret Terry Orr, this important book examines the characteristics of successful educational leadership programs and offers concrete recommendations to improve programs nationwide. In a study funded by the Wallace Foundation, Darling-Hammond and the team examined eight exemplary principal development programs, as well as state policies and principals' experiences across the country. Using the data from the study, they reveal how successful programs are structured, the skills and knowledge participants gain, and what they are able to do in practice as school leaders as a result. What do these exemplary programs have in common? Aggressive recruitment; close ties with schools in the community; on-the-ground training under the wing of expert principals, and a strong emphasis on the cutting-edge theories of instructional and transformational leadership. In addition to highlighting the programs' similarities, the study also explains the differences among the programs and sheds light on the effectiveness of approaches and models from different states and contexts?East, West, North, and South; urban and rural; pre-service and in-service. The authors analyze program outcomes for principals and their schools, including illustrative case studies and educators' voices on the influence of programs' strategies for recruitment, internships, mentoring, and coursework. The ideas and suggestions outlined in Preparing Principals for a Changing World are presented with the goal of increasing the number of highly qualified, thoughtful, and innovative educational leaders.

Principals in Succession by Robert E. White,Karyn Cooper Pdf

Contributors to this volume examine structures and processes that school boards have in place directly relating to the process of principal or vice-principal succession. As well, they consider the effect that these structures and processes have upon staff and administrators themselves. These contributors investigate policies, procedures and practices that school boards employ in terms of leadership succession, and explore implications of these constructs for the sustainability of school improvement. This volume presents an overview of the process of principal or vice-principal succession, descriptions of school district practices surrounding this process and discussions regarding how succession procedures affect individuals and groups of individuals. This volume also highlights those board policies that incorporate practices used to develop models that support and allow administrators to succeed. It articulates how school leaders and staff members deal with change and improvement efforts in successive schools, as well as how board policies and practices support principals and vice-principals at any stage in the succession process. This volume is useful as a reference guide relating to transfer and rotation procedures in school systems across the nation.

The Principal as Leader by Larry W. Hughes Pdf

Unlike other books on the subject, this exploration of the principal asleader -- rather than as manager -- offers avariety of perspectives by well-known education authorities. It explores the dimensions of school leadership both in theory and in practice and demonstrates how principals can substantially improve instruction. Discusses the nature of leadership and new challenges that must be faced; the effective use of computers as a management and instructional tool; and how principals can help improve instruction -- based on their own behavior, the climate of the school, and the improvement of instructional practice. Covers a multitude ofissues -- e.g., the decentralization of decision-making to school sites, restructuring the curriculum to become more responsive to children's needs, the implications that demographic shifts have on school programming, human resource development, and the legal and ethical framework surrounding the issues. Includes a case study or application in each chapter. For those preparing to be school executives.
