Integrated Seismic Design of Structure and Control Systems by Paolo Castaldo Pdf

The structural optimization procedure presented in this book makes it possible to achieve seismic protection through integrated structural/control system design. In particular, it is explained how slender structural systems with a high seismic performance can be achieved through inclusion of viscous and viscoelastic dampers as an integral part of the system. Readers are provided with essential introductory information on passive structural control and passive energy dissipation systems. Dynamic analyses of both single and multiple degree of freedom systems are performed in order to verify the achievement of pre-assigned performance targets, and it is explained how the optimal integrated design methodology, also relevant to retrofitting of existing buildings, should be applied. The book illustrates how structural control research is opening up new possibilities in structural forms and configurations without compromising structural performance.

Hybrid Systems: Computation and Control by Rajeev Alur,George Pappas Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the 7th Workshop on Hybrid Systems: Computation and Control (HSCC 2004) held in Philadelphia, USA, from March 25 to 27, 2004. The annual workshop on hybrid systems attracts researchers from academia and industry interested in modeling, analysis, and implemen- tion of dynamic and reactive systems involving both discrete and continuous behaviors. The previous workshops in the HSCC series were held in Berkeley, USA(1998),Nijmegen,TheNetherlands(1999),Pittsburgh,USA(2000),Rome, Italy (2001), Palo Alto, USA (2002), and Prague, Czech Republic (2003). This year’s HSCC was organized in cooperation with ACM SIGBED (Special Interest Group on Embedded Systems) and was technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Control Systems Society. The program consisted of 4 invited talks and 43 regular papers selected from 117 regular submissions. The program covered topics such as tools for analysis and veri?cation, control and optimization, modeling, and engineering applica- ons, as in past years, and emerging directions in programming language support and implementation. The program also contained one special session focusing on the interplay between biomolecular networks, systems biology, formal methods, andthecontrolofhybridsystems.

Variable Structure Control of Complex Systems by Xing-Gang Yan,Sarah K. Spurgeon,Christopher Edwards Pdf

This book systematizes recent research work on variable-structure control. It is self-contained, presenting necessary mathematical preliminaries so that the theoretical developments can be easily understood by a broad readership. The text begins with an introduction to the fundamental ideas of variable-structure control pertinent to their application in complex nonlinear systems. In the core of the book, the authors lay out an approach, suitable for a large class of systems, that deals with system uncertainties with nonlinear bounds. Its treatment of complex systems in which limited measurement information is available makes the results developed convenient to implement. Various case-study applications are described, from aerospace, through power systems to river pollution control with supporting simulations to aid the transition from mathematical theory to engineering practicalities. The book addresses systems with nonlinearities, time delays and interconnections and considers issues such as stabilization, observer design, and fault detection and isolation. It makes extensive use of numerical and practical examples to render its ideas more readily absorbed. Variable-Structure Control of Complex Systems will be of interest to academic researchers studying control theory and its application in nonlinear, time-delayed an modular large-scale systems; the robustness of its approach will also be attractive to control engineers working in industries associate with aerospace, electrical and mechanical engineering.

Analysis and Control of Underactuated Mechanical Systems by Amal Choukchou-Braham,Brahim Cherki,Mohamed Djemaï,Krishna Busawon Pdf

This monograph provides readers with tools for the analysis, and control of systems with fewer control inputs than degrees of freedom to be controlled, i.e., underactuated systems. The text deals with the consequences of a lack of a general theory that would allow methodical treatment of such systems and the ad hoc approach to control design that often results, imposing a level of organization whenever the latter is lacking. The authors take as their starting point the construction of a graphical characterization or control flow diagram reflecting the transmission of generalized forces through the degrees of freedom. Underactuated systems are classified according to the three main structures by which this is found to happen—chain, tree, and isolated vertex—and control design procedures proposed. The procedure is applied to several well-known examples of underactuated systems: acrobot; pendubot; Tora system; ball and beam; inertia wheel; and robotic arm with elastic joint. The text is illustrated with MATLABsup®/sup/Simulink® simulations that demonstrate the effectiveness of the methods detailed./ppReaders interested in aircraft, vehicle control or various forms of walking robot will be able to learn from iUnderactuated Mechanical Systems

Discrete-Time Sliding Mode Control for Networked Control System by Dipesh H. Shah,Axaykumar Mehta Pdf

This book presents novel algorithms for designing Discrete-Time Sliding Mode Controllers (DSMCs) for Networked Control Systems (NCSs) with both types of fractional delays namely deterministic delay and random delay along with different packet loss conditions such as single packet loss and multiple packet loss that occur within the sampling period. Firstly, the switching type and non-switching type algorithms developed for the deterministic type fractional delay where the delay is compensated using Thiran’s approximation technique. A modified discrete-time sliding surface is proposed to derive the discrete-time sliding mode control algorithms. The algorithm is further extended for the random fractional delay with single packet loss and multiple packet loss situations. The random fractional delay is modelled using Poisson’s distribution function and packet loss is modelled by means of Bernoulli’s function. The condition for closed loop stability in all above situations are derived using the Lyapunov function. Lastly, the efficacy of the proposed DSMC algorithms are demonstrated by extensive simulations and also experimentally validated on a servo system.

Management Control of Global Supply Chains by Nils Horch Pdf

Within global and rapidly changing environments, cooperation and networking offer possibilities for sharing costs and risks, as well as keeping up with constantly renewed information from outside the firms' boundaries. In line with this, an effective management control of supply chain processes seems to be relevant to compete against other supply chains and to get the required information. In this context, an implementation of a management control institution for inter-firm relations, like a supply chain management control (SCMC), that provides relevant qualitative and quantitative data to manage supply chains reflects an important issue. However, a comprehensive approach with regard to the management control of the entire supply chain and how it can be fulfilled has received scant attention in prior research. The aim of this thesis is therefore to analyze management control systems in global supply chains by means of a mixed methods design with special regard to functional, institutional and instrumental issues. In this context, qualitative data are combined with theoretical insights to develop an empirical model which is tested by means of a quantitative study. Following this, insights into management control aspects, organization of the supply chain management control, management control mechanisms, and the integration of suppliers are provided.
