The Alps in 1864 by Adolphus Warburton Moore Pdf

Excerpt from The Alps in 1864: A Private Journal IN writing this Preface I complete, not without regret, a pleasant task which has occupied much of my spare time during the last three years. For many years a copy of Moore's Journal of 1864 has been the most valued book in my own Alpine Library. The Alps in 1864 was, however, never published. I believe that only about one hundred copies were printed - these were presented by Moore to his personal friends, so that the work has remained hitherto practically inaccessible to general readers. It seemed to me a pity that the ever-growing circle of those who take an interest in Mountaineering - whether active or only academic - should not have an Opportunity of reading a book which is truly, as the Editor of the Alpine Journal said at the time of Moore's death, 'one of the most vivid and fascinating books of Alpine travel which have ever been written.' In reply to my request, Mr. Moore's family were good enough not only to give me permission to reprint the Journal of 1864, but also to place at my disposal several manuscript volumes of later Journals which had been preserved, and of which I have been able to make much use. Angelo, Or, The Pine Forest in the Alps by Geraldine Endsor Jewsbury Pdf

An old woman lived near a village in the Alps. One day she appeared with a small child who, she said was her grandson. Some time later, little Angelo was awakened by smoke in their cottage and ran to the village for help, but the cottage was destroyed and the woman killed. Angelo was taken in by a woman in the village, but her husband gave him to a cruel woodcutter. Angelo ran away fearing he would be beaten after losing an axe, and was found by a local Curé. The Curé sheltered Angelo and discovered he had a fine talent for painting. He sent Angelo to Rome, where the boy was trained in an artist's studio. When the artist died, he left Angelo much of his estate, and Angelo was a wealthy man, but remained kind and generous. Then a plague entered the city. Angelo spent his days looking for children orphaned by the disease and found a way to shelter them. When, at last, the plague ran its course, Angelo collapsed and died.

100 Hut Walks in the Alps by Kev Reynolds Pdf

This popular guidebook by expert Kev Reynolds describes 100 day walks focusing on the mountain huts of the Alps. With walks in France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Slovenia, there are routes to suit every taste - from gentle and undemanding to long and tough, as well as all varieties of difficulty in between. What they have in common is a visit to a hut, each with its own character. Some walks are perfect for lunch at a hut before a return to the valley base, others involve an overnight stay at a hut. In a few cases, a short hut-to-hut tour is suggested. The routes are grouped by country and by specific Alpine district. Most of the routes avoid any climbing of a technical nature, beyond the odd scramble aided by a fixed rope. Notes on hut etiquette, what to take and an English-French-German-Italian glossary are also included to help trekkers get the most out of their time in the Alps.

The Swiss Alps by Kev Reynolds Pdf

This comprehensive book is an excellent planning resource for those who wish to venture into the Swiss Alps. Whether you are planning a walk, scramble, climb or ski tour this larger format guide describes each mountain area throughout Switzerland - the peaks, passes, valleys and bases - to help readers identify the best destinations for their chosen mountain activity. Dozens of individual valleys are described, together with the mountains that wall them, with recommendations given for their finest walks, treks and climbs. Working eastwards across the country, this guide is divided into seven chapters: Chablais Alps, Pennine Alp, Lepontine and Adula Alps, Bernina, Bregaglia and Albula Alps, Bernese Alps, Central Swiss Alps and the Silvretta and Ratikon Alps, each devoted to a specific range or group of connecting ranges. However, this is not a route guide and detailed descriptions are not provided. The aim of the book is to inspire as well as inform; to show first-time visitors just what the Swiss Alps have to offer and provide a new perspective for those who have been before.

Scrambles Amongst The Alps In The Years 1860-69 by Edward Whymper Pdf

The ascent of Mont Pelvoux (including the disagreeables) was a very delightful scramble. The mountain air did not act as an emetic; the sky did not look black, instead of blue; nor did I feel tempted to throw myself over precipices. I hastened to enlarge my experience, and went to the Matterhorn. I was urged towards Mont Pelvoux by those mysterious impulses which cause men to peer into the unknown. Not only was this mountain reputed to be the highest in France, and on that account was worthy of attention, but it was the dominating point of a most picturesque district of the highest interest, which, to this day, remains almost unexplored! The Matterhorn attracted me simply by its grandeur. It was considered to be the most thoroughly inaccessible of all mountains, even by those who ought to have known better. Stimulated to make fresh exertions by one repulse after another, I returned, year after year, as I had opportunity, more and more determined to find a way up it, or to prove it to be really inaccessible
