Bodies of Enchantment by Nicola Levell Pdf

Puppeteers have enthralled audiences for millennia with their unique charm, not just telling stories but enacting history, sharing knowledge, and preserving culture. In this dazzling and immersive volume based on the 2019 exhibition Shadows, Strings and Other Things (UBC Museum of Anthropology), puppets from all corners of the globe are resplendent in striking photographs that illustrate texts from ten scholars and puppeteers. Bodies of Enchantment highlights still-vital traditional puppetry practices, as well as examples of modern adaptations of the form: translucent leather shadow puppets depict ancient Indian epics in modern-day Indonesia; Taiwan's long-running Pili glove puppetry show thrives in the digital era; and Indigenous filmmaker Amanda Strong uses stop-motion animation to create entrancing new realms. Bodies of Enchantment: Puppets from Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas features over 150 full-color images, and chapters by nine additional contributors: Anthony Alan Shelton revels at the alluring uncanniness of puppets; Annie Katsura Rollins explores Chinese shadow puppetry; Sutrisno Setya Hartana introduces us to Indonesian wayang; Jo Ann Cavallo unpacks the archetypes of Sicilian opera dei pupi; Mary Jo Arnoldi encounters the Sogobò masquerade in Malí; Izabela Brochado shows the continued vibrancy of mamulengo in Brazil; Kathy Foley and Catherine Ries uncover the significance of clothing in Javanese wayang golak cepak; and Jill Baird shares the history of puppetry at the Museum of Anthropology.

Shadow Puppets of South Liaoning by Marie Gao Pdf

Shadow puppetry is a traditional art that exists in many different regions of China and beyond, including Thailand and Cambodia. In China, many have heard of shadow puppetry, but few understand the core of the art since it takes many years of practice and experience. This art is not defined by one specific culture, but it is still unique since it combines history and science. Shadow puppetry originated from China around 2000 years ago, but it is disheartening that fewer people are showing a continued interest in the art. However, this should never be an excuse for giving up on inheriting the traditional art; shadow puppetry is a treasure not just for China but for the world. This book collects puppets from the southern region of Liaoning Province. Southern Liaoning includes, among others, Dalian, Yingkou, Anshan, and Dandong. The whole region is not very big, but it has many special customs, a history of inland migration, different battles, and even historical foreign diplomacy. Shadow puppetry is used to record history and life stories. Based on these materials, there are also some related myths that can be shown by shadow puppets. The reader of this book can find explanations and comments for puppets and understand how previous artisans designed puppets and why they designed so. There are details that may be ignored when observing a specific puppet, but actually they are crucial. Cultural heritage like shadow puppetry should never be limited by its origin and cultural background; it should be spread out so that more people can realize the real beauty of it. This book provides only a brief introduction, and its purpose is to spark some interest among readers. Art derives from real life. There is a Chinese quote describing shadow puppetry as "a piece of mouth may carry thousands of stories; a pair of hands may raise years of histories." It is fair to say that this art contains so many things waiting to be explored. This kind of treasure needs to be noticed by m
