Powder Days by Heather Hansman Pdf

*A Boston Globe Bestseller!* *An Outside Magazine Book Club Pick!* *Winner of the International Ski Association's Ullr Book Award!* "A sparkling account."—Wall Street Journal An electrifying adventure into the rich history of skiing and the modern heart of ski-bum culture, from one of America's most preeminent ski journalists The story of skiing is, in many ways, the story of America itself. Blossoming from the Tenth Mountain Division in World War II, the sport took hold across the country, driven by adventurers seeking the rush of freedom that only cold mountain air could provide. As skiing gained in popularity, mom-and-pop backcountry hills gave way to groomed trails and eventually the megaresorts of today. Along the way, the pioneers and diehards—the ski bums—remained the beating heart of the scene. Veteran ski journalist and former ski bum Heather Hansman takes readers on an exhilarating journey into the hidden history of American skiing, offering a glimpse into an underexplored subculture from the perspective of a true insider. Hopping from Vermont to Colorado, Montana to West Virginia, Hansman profiles the people who have built their lives around a cold-weather obsession. Along the way she reckons with skiing's problematic elements and investigates how the sport is evolving in the face of the existential threat of climate change.

Why Aspen by Friedl Pfeifer: Pdf

Why Aspen is a memoir by Friedl Pfeifer, Austrian ski legend and 10th Mountain Division soldier who pioneered skiing in Aspen, Sun Valley, and Alt. While training at the U.S. Army at Camp Hale, Colorado in 1944, 10th Mountain Division exercises included frequent mountain crossings and marches which brought Sergeant Friedl Pfeifer to Aspen where he quickly took note of the region's recreational ski resort potential. Recovered from being seriously injured in Italy In 1945, Pfeifer returned to Aspen in 1946 to form the legendary Aspen Ski School and with a further intention to realize his vision of a one-of-a-kind ski resort, he formed the Aspen Ski Corporation in 1946 in partnership with industrialist couple Walter & Elizabeth Paepcke. Wowed by Aspen's potential during a ski related visit in the late 1930's the Paepcke's fell in love with Aspen and, in partnership with Pfeifer, leveraged the world class resort development to further the cultural cache of the town in areas of architecture, the arts, music, and education. From that point "Aspen fever" took hold and most especially when Aspen was selected to host the 1950 FIS World Championships, the first of its kind on U.S. snow. In 1956 Friedl coached the U.S. Women's Ski Team and later the U.S. Women's Olympic Team in Cortina, Italy. Friedl left the Aspen Ski Corporation in 1958 to follow his passion for teaching skiing by developing Buttermilk Mountain.

The Story of Aspen by Mary E. Hayes Pdf

The history of Aspen as told through the stories of its people. Aspen has had five distinct eras in its history & each of these eras had its characters... the people who shaped their particular time. There were the prospectors & mining barons of the Silver Mining Years of the 1880s & 1890s. Next came the few hundred people who stayed & kept Aspen alive during the Silver Crash & the Great Depression. These people populated Aspen during the Ranching & Small Town Years of 1900 to 1940. The stories of the Early Years of Skiing & Culture of the 1940s & 1950s are told through the lives of ski bums, artists & writers & the people who established the cultural institutions of Aspen. All kinds of entrepreneurs & fun-loving people filled the Lighthearted Years of the 1960s & 1970s. The Glitz Years of the 1980s & the 1990s saw big money come into Aspen, creating a secure financial base for the skiing & the culture, but forever changing the real estate market as well as the lifestyles of Aspenites. As the stories of the people of each of these eras are told... the history comes alive. Writer Mary Eshbaugh Hayes, photographer Chris Cassatt, & printer Jeff Neumann worked together many years at The Aspen Times. They have put together the stories & the photographs of Aspen's five eras to create this history.
