The Language of Sisters by Cathy Lamb Pdf

A family of Russian refugees juggle their haunting past with their challenging present in this novel by the author of My Very Best Friend. Sometimes Toni Kozlovsky and her sisters know what each other is thinking, just when they need it most. Since Toni, Valerie, and Ellie were little girls growing up in Communist Russia, their parents have insisted it’s simply further proof that the Kozlovskys are special and different. Now a reporter, Toni lives on a yellow tugboat on Oregon’s Willamette River. As far as her parents are concerned, the pain of their old life and their dangerous escape should remain buried in the Moscow they left behind, as should the mysterious past of their adopted brother, Dmitry. But lately, Toni’s talent for putting on a smile isn’t enough to keep memories at bay. Valerie, a prosecuting attorney, wages constant war against the wrongs she could do nothing about as a child. Youngest sister Ellie is engaged to marry an Italian, breaking her mother’s heart in the process. Toni fears she’s about to lose her home, while the hard-edged DEA agent down the dock keeps trying to break through her reserve. Meanwhile, beneath the culture clashes and endearing quirks within her huge, noisy, loving family are deeper secrets that Toni has sworn to keep—even from the one person she longs to help most . . . “Lamb . . . draws readers into the embrace of Toni's eccentric and loud extended family, who inject regular bouts of humor into the story while their love for one another is palpable . . . . The joy of this intricate story is following these characters and their warm and compelling development . . . ” —Library Journal

On Christmas Tree Cove by Sarah Vance-Tompkins Pdf

This Christmas calls for a special touch of magic… December was always a special time for seaplane pilot Morgan Adair, but after losing her parents six years ago, the holiday is a quiet affair. When her siblings announce plans to sell the family home, Morgan longs to experience her favorite, now-forgotten tradition one more time: a lighted tree that, for over a hundred years, has appeared floating on a boat in the harbor every Christmas Eve. The Taylors were always rivals to the Adairs in the once-thriving fishing village of Christmas Tree Cove, but Jesse Taylor was much more. He wanted to be understanding when Morgan set aside their plans to escape to Chicago in order to hold her family together, but his future as a successful freelance photographer soared on without her. As Morgan dives deeper into the history of the mysterious holiday appearance, she discovers that true love has always been at the heart of the annual tradition. Can the wonder of Christmas and a few surprises along the way rekindle that love for Morgan and Jesse too?

Tugboat Stories by George Matteson Pdf

Tugboat Stories is a modern day Life on the Mississippi, with a touch of Moby Dick (in the detailed yet lyrical description of the boats, their work, and the people that work them), exploring one of the core themes of a uniquely American experience - life on the river - written by one who has lived it in one of the great harbors of the world. Tugboat Stories is a suite of linked stories based on the author's career as a seaman and owner/operator of tugboats working in New York Harbor from 1971 to 1998. The work comprises both a portrayal of the socially complex and deeply traditional world of the harbor community and the narrator's progress within that world from rank beginner to seasoned professional.Within the context of this loose narrative trajectory the author provides a first-hand experience of a unique life - physically demanding, sometimes comic, sometimes crude, often lonely, and, at its core, spiritually compelling. At the time the author entered the New York harbor scene, the tugboat business was still under the sway of 19th century values and practice. Binding agreements were forged by word of mouth. Skill was assessed within the community at large rather than by governmental process, and individuality - to the point of eccentricity - was easily accepted so long as the over-arching criteria of honesty and skill were met. The harbor was still a place where independence found equal place with self discipline and excellence. In a deeper context still, the Harbor and its people at that time shared an ancestry with the very roots of American literature. The Lower Manhattan shoreline where the narrator's boat is tied is the same as that trod by Ishmael in the opening paragraphs of Moby Dick, the river in front is the same as in Whitman's "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry". The looming Brooklyn Bridge and the harbor dawn are the same as beheld by Hart Crane. The narrator walks in the footprints of the creators of "On the Waterfront" and learns many of the same skills and disciplines as did Mark Twain in Life on the Mississippi. George Matteson lives in New York City and on the coast of Maine with his wife, artist Adele Ursone. He worked in and around NY Harbor and the Northeastern US coast and inland waterways from 1971 to 1999, including running his own tugboat, the Spuyten Duyvil, for 13 years. For some of those years, he not only worked, but also lived on the water. He is the author of Tugboats of New York: An Illustrated History, New York University Press, 2005 and Draggermen: Fishing on George's Bank, Scholastic/Four Winds Press, 1979, and the co-author of The Christmas Tugboat, a children's book, Clarion Books/Houghton Mifflin, 2012. He is also an accomplished poet, with an anthology, That Miraculous Land & Other Poems, East River Press, 1982. He curated an exhibition, As Tugs Go By: A History of the Towing Industry in New York Harbor, at the John Noble Maritime Collection, Sailors' Snug Harbor, in Staten Island, New York in March, 2008

The Sparrow's Blade by Kenneth R. Lewis Pdf

In the aftermath of having survived an encounter with pedophile serial killer Uriah Beek almost three years earlier, two still healing couples reconnect at Christmas time in the small Oregon coast city of Cutter Point. Kevin Kearnes, the city's former police chief, now a special agent with Homeland Security, is returning to Cutter Point with Britt McGraw and his two young sons to marry Britt on the same beach where he first kissed her. Thud Compton, Kearnes' old sergeant, and now Cutter Point's new chief, has invited them to stay at the Compton home. However, the Kearnes' are not the only ones traveling to Cutter Point for the holidays. Some very bad men are coming to town and instead of bearing gifts, they are planning on taking one for themselves; an old military sword from WWII rusting away inside its display case in the local library which, after 9/11, is now worth a million dollars on the world black market for war artifacts. Russian mobsters "Little Nikki" Kravchenko and Vlasi Voronov will happily accept half that much in payment from Phillip Peeters, the man who has hired them to steal it. But to college student Darius Ono, who has already failed at one attempt to take it, the sword is priceless and reclaiming it will restore honor to the name of his dead great uncle "The Emperor's Sparrow." Although they don't yet know it, Kevin Kearnes and Thud Compton are about to face their greatest threat ever when they are forced to pursue the murderous men who have stolen The Sparrow's Blade.
