The Classic Science Fiction Collection by H. G. Wells Pdf

For more than 100 years, science fiction writers have told tales of alien encounters and fascinating technologies and warned of the dangers of dystopian governments. From Victorians experimenting with time travel to pioneers exploring the depths of space, the stories collected here are a tribute to the imagination of the inventors of the modern science fiction genre. Some tales are filled with boundless optimism for the ingenuity of humanity while others provide fearful warnings of the risks of war and the dangers of technology. In the late 19th century, writers across the world began looking to the future. In France, Jules Verne explored the possibilities of future technology and the wonders of exploration in his novels Journey to the Centre of the Earthand Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In England, H. G. Wells established himself as one of the founders of science fiction with his novels The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds. They were both also prolific short story writers. Others followed suit. In Bengal, the feminist Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain used her fiction to advance women's rights and education. In the United States, Jack London found science fiction the perfect way to express some of his unique political ideas. By the end of World War I, science fiction had established itself as a major genre. With the birth of the pulp magazine came a slew of accomplished writers - authors such as George Griffith, John Ulrich Giesy, Homer Eon Flint, Cyril G. Wates and others excelled at the short story, able to experiment and create a sense of wonder in their fascinating tales. This collection includes stories by: Grant Allen Stephen Vincent Benét Miles J. Breuer Thornton DeKy Francis Flagg Homer Eon Flint John Ulrich Giesy George Griffith Austin Hall Will Harben Nathaniel Hawthorne Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain Rudyard Kipling Jack London Edward Page Mitchell Garrett P. Gold by Isaac Asimov Pdf

Gold is the final and crowning achievement of the fifty-year career of science fiction's transcendent genius, the world-famous author who defined the field of science fiction for its practitioners, its millions of readers, and the world at large. The first section contains stories that range from the humorous to the profound, at the heart of which is the title story, "Gold," a moving and revealing drama about a writer who gambles everything on a chance at immortality: a gamble Asimov himself made -- and won. The second section contains the grand master's ruminations on the SF genre itself. And the final section is comprised of Asimov's thoughts on the craft and writing of science fiction.

This linked list of over 350 free science fiction stories and novels in Amazon's permanent collection was recently updated with hundreds of works from famous science fiction writers who wrote in the 1950's and 1960's and apparently forgot to extend their copyright protection. For the more recent authors SciFi fans will be familiar with, I just list the links (arranged by author) that will take you to their titles in the Kindle store for free download. For the earlier writers, I usually include a one or two line summary of their books. I thought I read all the classic SciFi twenty years ago, but I found a couple dozen authors I'd never heard of while researching Amazon's free collection. Most of the titles in this linked list of the free classic science fiction on Amazon were written before the "Golden Age" of science fiction, but influenced the authors who came later. I've included several early utopia/dystopia books, a popular subject in the late Victorian period. A few supernatural titles are included when the author also wrote other types of books. I didn't include fairy tales, and I made judgment calls on skipping science fiction/fantasy that was written for children and young adults, or just included a few samples from those authors.
