The Colours of the Dance by E J Pepper Pdf

Rule 1: When you’re dancing, shoulders back and point your toes. Rule 2: Keep your thumbs clear when you’re chopping vegetables. Rule 3: Don’t go wandering through the house without permission. Ten-year-old Brede understands these household regulations well enough, but how to make sense of the endless talk of a Home Rule that has nothing to do with vegetables or dance? Homeless and destitute, she and her Aunt Kate are employed as the only Catholics in the household of the beautiful spendthrift Adelina Thompson and her bullying husband, Alexander. But what is it that Brede sees that forces her to flee with her aunt in terror? Taken into the household of William Henderson, a Protestant supporter of Irish Home Rule, Brede becomes the mute and uncomprehending witness to the unfolding political turmoil and to a love affair that will culminate in murder. Set in 19th century Ulster, Brede’s mesmerising voice breathes new life into this historic time.

The Heron Dance Book of Love and Gratitude by Roderick MacIver Pdf

In The Heron Dance Book of Love and Gratitude, Roderick MacIver uses text and pictures to encourage readers to discover that “all-transcendent meaning” in their daily lives. This wise and comforting book celebrates the open heart and the beauty and mystery that surround us through a wide array of voices and perspectives. MacIver weaves inspirational poetry and prose with his shimmering nature watercolors to create a book that helps readers discover—and honor—love and gratitude. These quotes from men and women span time and geography, but share a sense of hard-won wisdom. Henry Miller finds unexpected late-life solace in embracing the simple quality of trust. Gabriel García Márquez muses, “If I knew that this would be the last time you pass through this door, I’d embrace you, kiss you, and call you back for one more.” Helen Keller says, “God is in me as the sun is in the color and fragrance of a flower.” This book is equally rewarding when sampled or read cover to cover as a respite from the pressures of modern life.

¡Mambo Mucho Mambo! The Dance That Crossed Color Lines by Dean Robbins Pdf

New York City’s desegregated Palladium Ballroom springs to life with a diverse 1940s cast in this jazzy picture-book tribute to the history of mambo and Latin jazz. Millie danced to jazz in her Italian neighborhood. Pedro danced to Latin songs in his Puerto Rican neighborhood. It was the 1940s in New York City, and they were forbidden to dance together . . . until first a band and then a ballroom broke the rules. Machito and His Afro-Cubans hit the scene with a brand-new sound, blending jazz trumpets and saxophones with Latin maracas and congas creating Latin jazz, music for the head, the heart, and the hips. Then the Palladium Ballroom issued a bold challenge to segregation and threw open its doors to all. Illustrated with verve and told through real-life characters who feature in an afterword, ¡Mambo Mucho Mambo! portrays the power of music and dance to transcend racial, religious, and ethnic boundaries.

The Dance of Death by Hans Holbein Pdf

The Dance of Death Danse Macabre Hans Holbein With an introductory note by Austin Dobson Dance of Death, also called Danse Macabre, is an artistic genre of late-medieval allegory on the universality of death: no matter one's station in life, the Dance of Death unites all. The Danse Macabre consists of the dead or personified Death summoning representatives from all walks of life to dance along to the grave, typically with a pope, emperor, king, child, and labourer. They were produced as mementos mori, to remind people of the fragility of their lives and how vain were the glories of earthly life. Its origins are postulated from illustrated sermon texts; the earliest recorded visual scheme was a now-lost mural in the Saints Innocents Cemetery in Paris dating from 1424 to 1425.

They agree, and this time, the playing is impeccable. Dušan Petricic’s brilliant illustrations full of movement and color, capture the sounds made by Joshua’s violin, from the missed notes to the swirling, uplifting strains of the perfectly executed piece. Children will readily empathize with Joshua’s misstep, but they will also learn that there is always a second chance.

Flight Path by E J Pepper Pdf

There is always a before and an after… Sophie and Miles have a long marriage, twin daughters, a close-knit circle of friends and a happy home, until an accusation of inappropriate sexual conduct with a pupil blows everything apart. Sophie knows Miles as her husband of thirty years, the father to their twins and a dedicated teacher. Could he really be a sexual abuser? As the trial approaches, Sophie must ask herself if Miles is merely a bumbling innocent or a scheming manipulator. Flight Path explores the effect that an accusation of sexual assault has on a family. Guilty or Innocent, nobody wins. “It’s rare to read a novel that is as gripping as it is subtle. Flight Path is that novel. Buried within the story of a marriage coming undone is a compelling exploration of our moral and sexual confusions – and of one of our worst fears: that of the predator. E. J. Pepper delivers a disquieting, absorbing story. Throughout, she reveals our human frailties and bonds with delicacy and power.” Alison MacLeod, Booker prize long-listed author of Unexploded

Jumping the Color Line by Susie Trenka Pdf

From the first synchronized sound films of the late 1920s through the end of World War II, African American music and dance styles were ubiquitous in films. Black performers, however, were marginalized, mostly limited to appearing in "specialty acts" and various types of short films, whereas stardom was reserved for Whites. Jumping the Color Line discusses vernacular jazz dance in film as a focal point of American race relations. Looking at intersections of race, gender, and class, the book examines how the racialized and gendered body in film performs, challenges, and negotiates identities and stereotypes. Arguing for the transformative and subversive potential of jazz dance performance onscreen, the six chapters address a variety of films and performers, including many that have received little attention to date. Topics include Hollywood's first Black female star (Nina Mae McKinney), male tap dance "class acts" in Black-cast short films of the early 1930s, the film career of Black tap soloist Jeni LeGon, the role of dance in the Soundies jukebox shorts of the 1940s, cinematic images of the Lindy hop, and a series of teen films from the early 1940s that appealed primarily to young White fans of swing culture. With a majority of examples taken from marginal film forms, such as shorts and B movies, the book highlights their role in disseminating alternative images of racial and gender identities as embodied by dancers – images that were at least partly at odds with those typically found in major Hollywood productions.
