The Completely Guilty Bystander by Mark Gaberman Pdf

After reading Whitman's "Leaves of Grass", Robert Louis Stevenson called it "a book which tumbled the world upside down for me." Stevenson died in 1894, so we can only imagine what he might have thought of "The Completely Guilty Bystander". Perhaps after leafing through stories such as "Grace Jones and the Garden of Eden", "Playing Doctor at the Reception" or "Mortal Combat with the Paper Pillow", Mr. Stevenson's view of the world might once again have spun dangerously out of control. Maybe "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" would have mentioned the hidden but surprisingly possible benefits of organized crime to the community. Or the desperate lengths a man will go to in the course of trying to get his phone service re-connected. The world can only be left to wonder if he even would have added a section on anger in everyday life and how it could relate back to TV''s "The Incredible Hulk". Of course, if Robert Louis Stevenson read those stories today, he'd be about 150 years old, so really, that act alone would have been very impressive.

Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander by Thomas Merton Pdf

In this series of notes, opinions, experiences, and reflections, Thomas Merton examines some of the most urgent questions of our age. With his characteristic forcefulness and candor, he brings the reader face-to-face with such provocative and controversial issues as the “death of God,” politics, modern life and values, and racial strife–issues that are as relevant today as they were fifty years ago. Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander is Merton at his best–detached but not unpassionate, humorous yet sensitive, at all times alive and searching, with a gift for language which has made him one of the most widely read and influential spiritual writers of our time.

The Solitary Explorer by Elena Malits Pdf

The Solitary Explorer responsibly and critically explores Thomas Merton's lifelong spiritual development as reflected in his religious and secular writings and delineates the meaning of his life and work for contemporary readers. It provides an interpretive chronology of Merton's writings and unravels the intertwining threads of self-realization and widening intellectual interests evidenced in the material he produced between his early autobiography and the controversial work of his later years. Elena Malits shows Merton as writer, as monk, as social critic, as seeker of wisdom in the East, as man of prayer, and as one continually on a journey into the unknown. Merton always held that the quest for God is a continuing one: The Solitary Explorer traces the progress of this quest in Merton's life and literary works to reveal a multifaceted spiritual guide who offers an approach to the divine at once reassuringly traditional and refreshingly contemporary.

Thomas Merton by James Thomas Baker Pdf

Thomas Merton: Social Critic organizes and critically analyzes the social thought of the Cistercian monk who has become an internationally known symbol of the spiritual element in man. The author evaluated all of Merton's writings, published and unpublished, then discussed his interpretations with Merton personally. The result is a perceptive relation of Merton's social thought to its genesis in his own life experiences and contemplation, a faithful rendering of Merton's thought on the problems of our time. Merton, the author makes clear, called for a spiritual, social, and religious union. It was a poetic and sometimes unimplemented solution to alienation and division, a valid and authentic, if at times limited, response to the contemporary chaos. This study will be greeted by a strong reaction from Mertonians everywhere.

The Ambient Christ by Joseph Masterleo Pdf

There is a unified field in the cosmos that holds everything together, and every discipline is a portal to it. Science calls it a field of fundamental forces and elementary particles. Religion calls it God and accepts it by faith as an impenetrable mystery. How can their unbending perspectives be reconciled? In The Ambient Christ, the author proposes a novel paradigm that explains their complementarity as a seamless unity. This innovative model provides a new story for an ailing and divided planet in the twenty-first century, and a viable solution to the holy grail quest. "There is something too narrow and missing in the gospel as it is presented to us. In spite of appearances, our age is more religious than ever; it only needs stronger meat" -Pierre Teilhard de Chardin "A religion, old or new, that stressed the magnificence of the universe as revealed by modern science might be able to draw forth reserves of reverence and awe hardly tapped by conventional faiths. Sooner or later, such a religion will emerge." -Carl Sagan”
