The Early American Novel (Classic Reprint) by Lillie Deming Loshe Pdf

Excerpt from The Early American Novel To present a fairly comprehensive account of the earliest attempts at novel writing in America has been the aim Of this study. The period covered - that from 1789 to 1830 - Opens with the publication of the first tentative and amateurish American novels and at its close leaves the novel an established form in American literature. In dealing with these early tales much space has been given to description of the stories themselves. This method of treat ment seemed to be necessary for two reasons - because these tales are little known, indeed, with a few exceptions, they are generally unknown, and because most of them are rare, and some of them almost inaccessible. Early American Literature by Anna Lorraine Guthrie Pdf

Excerpt from Early American Literature: A Study Outline In this outline the points given for each paper are suggestions which embody the salient facts about the author. They may be treated as questions to be looked up by the whole club, they may be assigned to individuals, or they may be treated as a whole by one person. Each one who is responsible for a main topic is advised to use his own judgment in handling his subject and in bringing out other phases than those outlined. The Readings are also suggestions for which other selections may be substituted. The Recommended Reading represents the general consensus of opinion of critics and writers as to the best work of the various authors. Quotations have been freely given in the hope that they may help to a better and more sympathetic understanding of the author, and with the intent that each one may study and decide independently whether as estimates they are just and true. Sometimes special references are given under individual topics. It has not been the intention to make these take the place of the general references which it is well to study in every case. They have been given simply as a help to material bearing on a particular phase of the subject. The bibliography has been limited to a few books and to the best articles in periodicals most easily procurable. If it is thought that too many histories of American literature are cited the critical comments in the Bibliography will serve as an aid in selecting those most helpful. American Fiction (Classic Reprint) by Edgar Allan Poe Pdf

Excerpt from American Fiction This contribution to the technique of the American short story, though of great importance, was not unique: almost simultaneously with Hawthorne, Poe, with more attention to technique and a wider range of subject and of mood, was strengthening what has so far been our most distinctive American contribution to prose fiction. The detective story, the tale of horror, and the story of the grotesque were all executed by Poe with the same attention to form. Whatever one may think of his sense of probability and of his some what tricky use of devices for hypnotizing the reader, one cannot possibly deny the service of his stories - or the serv ice of the criticism with which they were accompanied - to the upbuilding of an important school. It is singular, in view of the humor and the formlessness of so much early American writing, that both Poe and Hawthorne should have thus persistently combined masterly correctness with an almost obstinate preference for horror, mystery, and gloom. In these two great founders of our fiction there is no marked localization: both are vivid - Poe brilliantly and Hawthorne quietly so - yet neither is much interested in studying any particular region. Their successors have, how ever, almost with one accord, studied the landscape, the dialect, and most Of all the manner of life in various American localities. Of these writers of American short stories distinguished for their careful employment of local color, Bret Harte deserves special notice, because of the novelty of his material and the tremendous sensation which his Cali formia stories produced in the seventies. Since his day every section of the country has been more or less successfully, but always carefully, represented in the short story. A History of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Percy H. Boynton Pdf

Excerpt from A History of American Literature The general purpose in the preparation of this book has, been to eliminate negligible detail and to subordinate or omit authors of minor importance in order to stress the men and the movements that are most significant in American intel lectual history/ The book has therefore been written with a view to showing the drift of American thought as illustrated by major writers or groups and as revealed by a careful study of one or two cardinal works by each. In this sequence of thought the growth of American self-consciousness and the changing ideals of American patriotism have been kept in mind throughout. The attempt is made to induce study of representative classics and extensive reading of the American literature which illuminates the past of the country chiefly, of course, in reminiscent fiction, drama, and poetry. The Job by Sinclair Lewis Pdf

Excerpt from The Job: An American Novel He believed that Panama, Pennsylvania, was good enough for anybody. This last opinion was not shared by his wife, nor by his daughter Una. Mrs. Golden was one of tue women who aspire just enough to be vaguely discontented; not enough to make them toil at the acquisition of understanding and knowl edge. She had floated into a comfortable semi-belief in a semi-christian Science, and she read novels with a conviction that she would have been a romantic person if she hadn't married Mr. Golden - not but what he's a fine man and very bright and all, but he hasn't got much imagination or any, well, romance! Robert Greathouse by John Franklin Swift Pdf

Excerpt from Robert Greathouse: An American Novel San Francisco in her early days possessed splendid gam bling-saloons before decent inns could be finished, and for years the comfort and even luxury of these hells rendered them the general lounging-place of men who would have blushed at the bare thought of participating in the disreputable amusement or calling of the gambler. That which has existed and been suppressed by law in San Francisco sprang at once into active life and vigor in Vir ginia City, where as yet no law had been decreed. Stoner by John Williams Pdf

Discover an American masterpiece. This unassuming story about the life of a quiet English professor has earned the admiration of readers all over the globe. William Stoner is born at the end of the nineteenth century into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. Sent to the state university to study agronomy, he instead falls in love with English literature and embraces a scholar’s life, so different from the hardscrabble existence he has known. And yet as the years pass, Stoner encounters a succession of disappointments: marriage into a “proper” family estranges him from his parents; his career is stymied; his wife and daughter turn coldly away from him; a transforming experience of new love ends under threat of scandal. Driven ever deeper within himself, Stoner rediscovers the stoic silence of his forebears and confronts an essential solitude. John Williams’s luminous and deeply moving novel is a work of quiet perfection. William Stoner emerges from it not only as an archetypal American, but as an unlikely existential hero, standing, like a figure in a painting by Edward Hopper, in stark relief against an unforgiving world.

American Authors by Mildred Rutherford Pdf

Excerpt from American Authors: A Hand-Book of American Literature From Early Colonial to Living Writers To prepare a text-book of American literature is a difficult task. It 'is utterly impossible to give every writer a place in so small a compass, and, as a matter of fact, justice cannot be done every section of our broad land. Especially do we realize this to be true, when we discover that in the South alone there are over writers, to say naught of the remaining three-sections. While we trust a spirit of fairness shall per vade our work, we know that in the judgment of many wise critics some names will be omitted contrary to their opinion, and many inserted which they think should have been omitted. Every compiler of a work of this kind is subject to this criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Peace, Or the Stolen Will! by Mary W. Janvrin Pdf

Excerpt from Peace, or the Stolen Will!: An American Novel The tall, old-fashioned clock in the corner Of the long, low, nicely swept kitchen had long ago told the hour of nine, - the evening wore late to primitive country dwellers, Whose motto was the time-honored early to bed and early to rise, - the logs of the hickory fire had burned low, and lay smouldering on the iron fire-dogs, - the wind whisked down the wide-mouthed chimney and flared the candle on the little round table, Whirled tiny clouds of white ashes all over the red brick hearth, or, now and then sent a sudden tongue of red flame from out the dying fire-brands, lighting up the Old kitchen, the dressers With their rows of polished pewter ware, the little looking-glass with quaintly carven frame wreathed With evergreen and scarlet wax berries, the Old-fashioned furniture, ears of interwoven' traced corn, and strings of bright red bell-peppers suspended from the beamed ceiling, and then, dying into darkness, grim Shadows quivered over all. The gray kitten had purred herself to sleep in the warmest corner of the hearth; Bruno, the great watch-dog, a veteran Newfoundlander, lay with his head between his shaggy fore paws: the old clock still ticked on With its steady monotone, while the evening wore later; but yet Aunt Patience Wedge wood sat knitting, knitting, beside the little round table, for she had sat up that night far beyond her usual time to toe Off the last of a pair of yarn socks for Brother Reuben, who dozed in his arm-chair on the Opposite side of the hearth. The Belle O Becket's Lane by John Beatty Pdf

Excerpt from The Belle O Becket's Lane: An American Novel Standing on a little elevation Of the Becket farm, not abrupt enough to be called a knoll, the eye was confronted on the north by a dense forest of great trees untouched by the axe of the pioneer. Towards the east the line of vision passed above clusters of second growth timber and numerous patches of hazel and brier to the level and weedy marsh-lands beyond these was the inlet or bay, and still farther away through the evergreen foliage of a narrow peninsula could be caught glimpses of the glassy surface of a great lake. On the South was a Slightly undulated prairie, dotted here and there with groups of hickory, walnut, and oak, interspersed with thorn, Wild plum, and crab. To the west, and encroaching on the prairie-land somewhat, were enclosed and cultivated fields. Running diagon ally from southwest to northeast was a stream which, after rippling through the prairie and wooded lands.
