The Early Baptists of Virginia (Classic Reprint) by Robert Boyle C. Howell Pdf

Excerpt from The Early Baptists of Virginia The book which is here offered to the public is an enlargement of an Address delivered by Dr. Howell, in New York, in 1856, before the American Baptist Historical Society, and then published by the Society in pamphlet form. Soon after its publication, in 1857, he expanded it into a book, and a subsequent revision in 1864 gave it its present form. The interest which the original attempt to set forth the character and work of early Virginia Baptists excited, induces the hope that the present completer work may be received by Baptists everywhere as a valuable contribution to their history. It commends itself indeed to all students of history, and especially to the friends of religious liberty, as a careful delineation (drawn for the most part from original sources) of a part of one of the great movements of modern society. A Short History of the Baptists (Classic Reprint) by Henry Clay Vedder Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of the Baptists When the Short History of the Baptists was first published, in_1891, it was the convio tion of both author and publishers that a his tory of our denomination, written in an inter esting style, yet with scholarly accuracy, not so voluminous as to repel readers and cheap enough to be owned by the poorest, was a greatly needed book; The gratifying sale of the book has indicated that Baptists have found in it at least some approach to what they needed. The publishers - havefldecided to re issue it in a new dress, at a price that certainly puts it within the reach of anybody who cares to have it. The Early English Baptists, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by B. Evans Pdf

Excerpt from The Early English Baptists, Vol. 1 The first attempt at a history of the denomination was made by Thomas Crosby. He was a deacon of the church in Goat Street, over which the excellent Benjamin Stinton presided, and kept a school in Southwark. His work is in four volumes, and is now somewhat scarce. Materials for a similar work had been collected by his pastor. These he placed in the hands of the celebrated historian of the Puritans. The unfair use, scarcely, indeed, the use at all, of the information by Mr. Neal, induced the author to write and issue his work. There is much valuable informa tion of men and events, of one of the darkest and most humiliating periods of our national history, con tained in this work. Crosby was probably conversant with some of the sufferers. His intimacy with the leading ministers in the metropolis was close. Keach and others had ministered to the church with which he was officially connected. From men, competent to speak, he has told us much which, otherwise, would have been lost. To the future historian this writer's work will always be of value. Next in this field of denominational literature appeared Mr. A. Taylor. His work is in two volumes, and was issued more than half a century ago. It is avowedly a History of the English General Baptists. It contains a mass of important information in refer ence to this increasing section of the body, especially of the New Connexion, formed principally by the late Dan Taylor. Many of Mr. Taylor's conclusions will be found more than vindicated, by the documents which will appear in this and the subsequent volume. The Baptist Faith and Message 2000 by Douglas K. Blount,Joseph D. Wooddell Pdf

Southern Baptists are the nation's largest protestant denomination, with over 43,000 churches and millions of members. Since its inception, controversy has surrounded the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, Southern Baptists' most recent confession of faith. The present volume consists of essays by Baptist scholars explaining and defending that document. Each of the 18 articles of the BF&M 2000 is addressed, with special attention to the most critical issues and changes from the denomination's 1963 confession. Also included is an appendix comprising the full text of all three Baptist Faith and Message statements from the 20th century (1925, 1963, and 2000), in side-by-side columns for easy reference and comparison. Contributors include Al Mohler, Paige Patterson, Tom Nettles, Dorothy Patterson, E. David Cook, and C. Ben Mitchell, with a foreword by Susie Hawkins. Brief yet comprehensive, detailed yet accessible to the non-specialist, this volume is a must read for Southern Baptist professors and students, staff and church members, and anyone interested in one of the most powerful religious forces in America.
