The Educational Systems of Great Britain and Ireland (Classic Reprint) by Graham Balfour Pdf

Excerpt from The Educational Systems of Great Britain and Ireland For the sake Of clearness I have had to confine myself almost entirely to the central authorities which have controlled and the statutes which have regulated the development of our education. The very attempt, however, to describe our education as a set of systems at once draws attention to the defects with which it is most often reproached - its want of uniformity and its incompleteness. It has variety, it has elasticity, it has vigour; there have been great energy, great generosity, and much power of practical administration shown in its service: but these qualities have varied widely in their application to individual Circumstances, and a complete tribute to them would involve a description of almost every separate establish ment in the country. I have been unable to give any account of individual schools or institutions, and it was not until the region of higher educa tion was reached that any notice Of separate foundations became either feasible or desirable. The Educational Systems of Great Britain and Ireland by Graham Balfour Pdf

Excerpt from The Educational Systems of Great Britain and Ireland In this book I have tried to give a brief and fairly comprehensive account of general education in the United Kingdom during the nineteenth century. An impartial and even tedious catalogue of existing agencies seemed likely to be more effectual in indicating the present deficiencies and requirements of these islands than any more impassioned advocacy of my own or anybody else's views. The Introductory chapter was written last as a review of the sections, so that there has been no temptation to distort or even to emphasize any of the facts in order to illustrate the general views there suggested. On the other hand, the explanation of any passages or allusions in the Introduction which seem obscure will be found in the corresponding chapter of the book by reference to the Index. My materials have been drawn largely from the many and lengthy series of Departmental reports which deal with so much of the education of the country, but more especially from the blue-books of the numerous Commissions and Committees which from time to time have examined the abuses or summed up the progress of schools, colleges, and universities - the outcome of what Bagehot called 'the modern stocktaking habit: the habit of asking each man, thing, or institution, 'Well, what have you done since I saw you last?' There are many subjects into which no investigation has recently been made, or on which no relevant report exists; in such cases I have tried to present the best information obtainable, and can only regret that there is no more definite judgement on record, or no more complete evidence to sum up. EDUCATION IN GRT BRITAIN & IRE by I. L. Kandel Pdf

Excerpt from Education in Great Britain and Ireland The future and strength of the nation unquestionably depend upon the vitality of the child, upon his health and development, and upon his education and equipment for citizenship. Great and far-reaching issues have their origin and some of their inspiration in him. Yet in a certain though narrow sense everything depends upon his physique. If that be sound, we have the rock upon which a nation and a race may be buiThe national belief in the value of school medical inspection and treatment is best indicated by the efforts to maintain them in spite of the inroads made by the war emergency on the supply of doctors and nurses. The result of an experience of less than 10 years since the system was established as part of the school system is summarized in the following statements: To-day hundreds of thousands of children are healthier, better, and brighter for its labors. In large towns and small country villages there has arisen something of a new understanding of the child. He is coming steadily into his kingdom, into his individual birthright of health and well-being. Even in time of war, when the preoccupation and exigencies of the military situation have made exceptional demands upon the staff of persons, officials or voluntary, who have devoted themselves hitherto to the welfare of the child, the claims of the school medical service have been sufficiently valid and obvious to secure the maintenance of an irreducible minimum of its working. Boy Republic by Dr Brendan Walsh Pdf

Patrick Pearse, teacher, poet, and one of the executed leaders of the 1916 Rising has long been a central figure in Irish history. The book provides a radically new interpretation of Patrick Pearse's work in education, and examines how his work as a teacher became a potent political device in pre-independent Ireland. The book provides a complete account of Pearse's educational work at St. Enda's school, Dublin where a number of insurgents such as William Pearse, Thomas McDonagh and Con Colbert taught. The author draws upon the recollections of past-pupils, employees, descendants of those who worked with Pearse, founders of schools inspired by his work - including the descendants of Thomas McSweeny and Louis Gavan Duffy – and a vast array or primary source material to provide a comprehensive account of life at St. Enda's and the place of education within the 'Irish-Ireland' movement and the struggle for independence.

The System of National Education in Ireland, Its Principle and Practice (Classic Reprint) by J. C. Colquhoun Pdf

Excerpt from The System of National Education in Ireland, Its Principle and Practice The object of these pages may be briefly stated. It is not, I entreat the public to understand, the exposure of Mr. Carlile, or of any of the Commissioners of the Board of National Education. That object would never have induced me to take up the pen. The conduct of the Commissioners is a matter quite incidental to the question, and on which, if I could have avoided it, I should have been glad to pronounce no opinion. My object was the exposure of the system, and of that system the Commissioners form but a small part. The evil lies in the machine, not in the men who work it. They of course become implicated by their position, but if they were changed again and again, the mischief would remain unmitigated. That evil lies in uniting together men of opposite religious opinions, and committing to them the superintendence of popular education. That is the inherent vice of the system, and wherever that vice is repeated, the same results will appear. It is all the more necessary to bring this before the public at the present time, that an attempt is made to infuse the venom of this system both into England and Scotland. A struggle has commenced; and with the same party, a struggle to establish Liberalism in education. Liberalism in religion (or the Voluntary System), has for some years been obtruded upon us. Liberalism in education is now thrust on our notice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Social Paralysis and Social Change by Neil J. Smelser Pdf

Neil Smelser's Social Paralysis and Social Change is one of the most comprehensive histories of mass education ever written. It tells the story of how working-class education in nineteenth-century Britain—often paralyzed by class, religious, and economic conflict—struggled forward toward change. This book is ambitious in scope. It is both a detailed history of educational development and a theoretical study of social change, at once a case study of Britain and a comparative study of variations within Britain. Smelser simultaneously meets the scholarly standards of historians and critically addresses accepted theories of educational change—"progress," conflict, and functional theories. He also sheds new light on the process of secularization, the relations between industrialization and education, structural differentiation, and the role of the state in social change. This work marks a return for the author to the same historical arena—Victorian Britain—that inspired his classic work Social Change in the Industrial Revolution thirty-five years ago. Smelser's research has again been exhaustive. He has achieved a remarkable synthesis of the huge body of available materials, both primary and secondary. Smelser's latest book will be most controversial in its treatment of class as a primordial social grouping, beyond its economic significance. Indeed, his demonstration that class, ethnic, and religious groupings were decisive in determining the course of British working-class education has broad-ranging implications. These groupings remain at the heart of educational conflict, debate, and change in most societies—including our own—and prompt us to pose again and again the chronic question: who controls the educational terrain?

The Concept of the 'master' in Art Education in Britain and Ireland, 1770 to the Present by Matthew Charles Potter Pdf

This collection explores the student-master relationship in case studies ranging chronologically from 1770 to 2013, and geographically over the national art schools of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Essays explore the manner in which the Old Masters were deployed in education; fuelled the individual genius of art teachers and students; were used as a rhetorical tool for promoting cultural projects in the core and periphery of the British Isles; and united as well as divided opinions in response to changing expectations in discourse on art and education. Case studies examined in this book include the sophisticated tradition of 'academic' inquiry of establishment figures, like Joshua Reynolds and Frederic Leighton, as well as examples of radical reform undertaken by key individuals in the history of art education, such as Edward Poynter and William Coldstream.
