Structural Optimization by William R. Spillers,Keith M. MacBain Pdf

Structural Optimization is intended to supplement the engineer’s box of analysis and design tools making optimization as commonplace as the finite element method in the engineering workplace. It begins with an introduction to structural optimization and the methods of nonlinear programming such as Lagrange multipliers, Kuhn-Tucker conditions, and calculus of variations. It then discusses solution methods for optimization problems such as the classic method of linear programming which leads to the method of sequential linear programming. It then proposes using sequential linear programming together with the incremental equations of structures as a general method for structural optimization. It is furthermore intended to give the engineer an overview of the field of structural optimization.

A trade-off optimization model of environment impact and manufacturing cost for machining parts by Lei Zhang,Kaibo Tao,Yu Zheng,Kuankuan Zhu,Junwei Fang,Jin Su Pdf

Motivation: Throughout the life cycle, the environmental impact and manufacturing costs of a part are largely determined at the design stage. Therefore, a part design optimization method considering these two factors is proposed in this paper. At the same time, the comprehensive benefit is taken as the trade-off of these two factors. The reduction of the comprehensive benefit indicates that the optimized part has achieved better environmental and economic performance results. Methods: Firstly, the model is reconstructed using the dimension-driven method, and the feature information of the new part is extracted. Then, machining process planning is carried out based on the feature information. Secondly, a design optimization model for the comprehensive benefit is established based on the genetic algorithm. The model takes the dimension parameters of the part as the optimization variables and the reduction of the comprehensive benefit as the optimization objective. With the help of the Simulation plug-in for SolidWorks, the static analysis of the optimized model is conducted to determine whether it meets the performance requirements. Finally, the design optimization prototype system oriented to comprehensive benefit is established. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by taking the intermediate shaft of the belt conveyor reducer-sixth order step shaft as an example. Results: The case study shows that the optimization result of comprehensive benefit is 1.63%, which verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of the part design optimization method proposed in this paper.

Optimization of Structural Topology, Shape, and Material by Martin P. Bendsoe Pdf

In the past, the possibilities of structural optimization were restricted to an optimal choice of profiles and shape. Further improvement can be obtained by selecting appropriate advanced materials and by optimizing the topology, i.e. finding the best position and arrangement of structural elements within a construction. The optimization of structural topology permits the use of optimization algorithms at a very early stage of the design process. The method presented in this book has been developed by Martin Bendsoe in cooperation with other researchers and can be considered as one of the most effective approaches to the optimization of layout and material design.

Data Driven Methods for Civil Structural Health Monitoring and Resilience by Mohammad Noori,Carlo Rainieri,Marco Domaneschi,Vasilis Sarhosis Pdf

Data Driven Methods for Civil Structural Health Monitoring and Resilience: Latest Developments and Applications provides a comprehensive overview of data-driven methods for structural health monitoring (SHM) and resilience of civil engineering structures, mostly based on artificial intelligence or other advanced data science techniques. This allows existing structures to be turned into smart structures, thereby allowing them to provide intelligible information about their state of health and performance on a continuous, relatively real-time basis. Artificial-intelligence-based methodologies are becoming increasingly more attractive for civil engineering and SHM applications; machine learning and deep learning methods can be applied and further developed to transform the available data into valuable information for engineers and decision makers.

Elements of Structural Optimization by Raphael T. Haftka,Zafer Gürdal Pdf

The field of structural optimization is still a relatively new field undergoing rapid changes in methods and focus. Until recently there was a severe imbalance between the enormous amount of literature on the subject, and the paucity of applications to practical design problems. This imbalance is being gradually redressed. There is still no shortage of new publications, but there are also exciting applications of the methods of structural optimizations in the automotive, aerospace, civil engineering, machine design and other engineering fields. As a result of the growing pace of applications, research into structural optimization methods is increasingly driven by real-life problems. t-.Jost engineers who design structures employ complex general-purpose software packages for structural analysis. Often they do not have any access to the source program, and even more frequently they have only scant knowledge of the details of the structural analysis algorithms used in this software packages. Therefore the major challenge faced by researchers in structural optimization is to develop methods that are suitable for use with such software packages. Another major challenge is the high computational cost associated with the analysis of many complex real-life problems. In many cases the engineer who has the task of designing a structure cannot afford to analyze it more than a handful of times.

Structural Optimization by Uri Kirsch Pdf

This book was developed while teaching a graduate course at several universities in the United States. Europe and Israel. during the last two decades. The purpose of the book is to introduce the fundamentals and applications of optimum structural design. Much work has been done in this area recently and many studies have been published. The book is an attempt to collect together selected topics of this literature and to present them in a unified approach. It meets the need for an introductory text covering the basic concepts of modem structural optimization. A previous book by the author on this subject ("Optimum Structural Design". published by McGraw-Hill New York in 1981 and by Maruzen Tokyo in 1983). has been used extensively as a text in many universities throughout the world. The present book reflects the rapid progress and recent developments in this area. A major difficulty in studying structural optimization is that integration of concepts used in several areas. such as structural analysis. numerical optimization and engineering design. is necessary in order to solve a specific problem. To facilitate the study of these topics. the book discusses in detail alternative problem formulations. the fundamentals of different optimization methods and various considerations related to structural design. The advantages and the limitations of the presented approaches are illustrated by numerous examples.
