The Flying Sikh by Stephen Barker Pdf

The Flying Sikh tells the unique story of the only Sikh airman to fly with the RFC and the RAF during the First World War. It is the remarkable account of one man’s struggle to enlist, against discrimination, and then his service as a fighter pilot over the battlefields of Flanders. This book represents the only detailed study of an Indian national enlisting in Britain’s armed forces during the First World War. It is an account of India’s role in the war; the rise of Indian nationalism and the challenges of Indians to take up the status of a commissioned officer in His Majesty’s Armed Forces. Malik started his new life in Britain as a fourteen-year-old public school boy, who progressed to Balliol College, Oxford, before attempting to join the Royal Flying Corps after graduation with friends from university, but was denied a commission. Keen to participate in the war, he served with the French Red Cross in 1916 as an ambulance driver and then offered his services to the French air force. Ultimately, one of his Oxford tutors wrote on Malik’s behalf to General David Henderson, the former head of the RFC, and secured Malik a cadetship Above all though, it is the story of a man who was a county cricketer who played for Sussex and Oxford University, an outstanding golfer and fighter pilot who fought over Passchendaele in the autumn of 1917. Being a devout Sikh, he wore a specially designed flying helmet that fitted over his turban. Malik claimed two kills until he was shot down, crashing unconscious to the ground behind Allied lines. His Sopwith Camel was riddled with over 400 bullet holes. Malik was only one of a small number of Indian nationals who served with the RAF during the war. In later life, Malik became the first Indian High Commissioner to Canada, and then served as the Indian Ambassador to France.

All One Must Know About The Sikh Faith by Colonel Daljeet Sigh Cheema Pdf

This book helps as a religious teacher preaching the fundamental, learnings, basic beliefs and understanding of the sikh faith. It is a simple and primary book that teaches our young generation and beginners about The Sikh Religion. All One Must Know About The Sikh Faith Every generation is the trustee of its culture and heritage for future generations who become its custodians. Teachings of a faith of love, peace, Oneness of God and universal brotherhood founded by Guru Nanak, and carried forward by his nine followers, are the most valuable heritage of the Sikhs. Identity and unshaken faith of the present generation of Sikhs is, perhaps, the last link between the ones who value and respect its heritage and take pride in being born a Sikh and the new crop that seem to be getting lost in search of it. Despite the orthodoxy and rigidity that holds Sikhism back; Sikhs have excelled in all aspects of human endeavour and are acknowledged as uniquely courageous people working towards the upliftment of humanity and their contribution is extraordinary considering their small number. The youth in India and abroad are ignorant of the glorious past of the Sikh faith, what it stands for and what it can teach the world. For example, most of them may not be aware of the importance of the five Takhats, Amrit- vela, Daswandh, Chaali Mukte and Nishan Sahib et al in Sikh history. The knowledgeable must help the new generations understand all such aspects in correct historical perspective. The book in your hands is a humble effort in that direction.

The Hero and Hero-Making Across Genres by Amar Singh,Shipra Tholia,Pravin K Patel Pdf

This book critically examines how a Hero is made, sustained, and even deformed, in contemporary cultures. It brings together diverse ideas from philosophy, mythology, religion, literature, cinema, and social media to explore how heroes are constructed across genres, mediums, and traditions. The essays in this volume present fresh perspectives for readers to conceptualize the myriad possibilities the term ‘Hero’ brings with itself. They examine the making and unmaking of the heroes across literary, visual and social cultures —in religious spaces and in classical texts; in folk tales and fairy tales; in literature, as seen in Heinrich Böll’s Und Sagte Kein Einziges Wort, Thomas Brüssig’s Heroes like Us, and in movies, like Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and in the short film like Dean Potter's When Dogs Fly. The volume also features nuanced takes on intersectional feminist representations in hero movies; masculinity in sports biopics; taking everyday heroes from the real to the reel, among others key themes. A stimulating work that explores the mechanisms that ‘manufacture’ heroes, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers of English literature, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, film studies, media studies, literary and critical theory, arts and aesthetics, political sociology and political philosophy.
