The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs by Julia Bishop,Steve Roud Pdf

One of the Spectator's Books of the Year 2012 'Farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish ladies Farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain For we've received orders for to sail for old England But we hope in a short while to see you again' One of the great English popular art forms, the folk song can be painful, satirical, erotic, dramatic, rueful or funny. They have thrived when sung on a whim to a handful of friends in a pub; they have bewitched generations of English composers who have set them for everything from solo violin to full orchestra; they are sung in concerts, festivals, weddings, funerals and with nobody to hear but the singer. This magical new collection brings together all the classic folk songs as well as many lesser-known discoveries, complete with music and annotations on their original sources and meaning. Published in cooperation with the English Folk Dance and Song Society, it is a worthy successor to Ralph Vaughan Williams and A.L.Lloyd's original Penguin Book of English Folk Songs. 'Her keen eye did glitter like the bright stars by night The robe she was wearing was costly and white Her bare neck was shaded with her long raven hair And they called her pretty Susan, the pride of Kildare' In association with EFDSS, the English Folk Dance and Song Society

The Folk by Ross Cole Pdf

"Who were 'the folk'? This question has haunted generations of radicals and reactionaries alike. The Folk traces the musical culture of these elusive figures in Britain and the US during a crucial period from 1870 to 1930, and beyond to the contemporary alt-right. It follows an insistent set of disputes surrounding the practice of collecting, ideas of racial belonging, the poetics of nostalgia, and the pre-history of European fascism. It is the biography of a people who exist only as a symptom of the modern imagination and the archaeology of a landscape directing the flow of global politics today"--

The Handbook of Folklore by Charlotte Sophia Burne Pdf

An excerpt of a review from Man, Volume 15: THE original Handbook of Folklore, published in 1890, has long been out of print, and unobtainable except at a price far above that at which it was issued. Although the present handbook retains the name and the general scheme of classification of the original work, it has been so completely re-written and expanded that it has become, to all intents and purposes, an entirely new book. Its appearance, which, for several years, has been expected by students of its subject, has well fulfilled their anticipations, and Miss Burne is to be congratulated on its completion, for she undertook it simultaneously with, and in addition to, other important literary work connected with the Folk-Lore Society. Divided into three parts—"Belief and Practice," "Customs," and "Stories and Savings "—the book covers the whole of that "learning of the people" (whether they be or be not what we call "civilised" folk) which is termed, shortly, "Folklore." The headings of the chapters show the fascinating nature of the field to be covered, and the importance of the subject to the ethnologist—The Soul and Another Life; Superhuman Beings; Omens and Divination; The Magic Art; Disease and Leechcraft; Social and Political Institutions; Rites of Individual Life; Occupations and Industries; Calendar Fasts and Festivals; Games, Sports, and Pastimes; Stories; Songs and Ballads; Proverbs and Riddles; to take some of them—while the number of examples quoted in illustration of the subjects dealt with make the book engaging to the general reader. An excellent introduction describes what folklore is and what it covers—" every "thing which makes part of the mental equipment of the folk, as distinguished "from their technical skill "—and gives a set of instructions and directions, based on the practical experiences of several successful collectors of folklore in the British Isles and abroad, as to the best methods to be employed in getting into touch with the inner lives and the intimate beliefs of the people within the worker's field. In furtherance of such collecting work a valuable "Questionary" is given as Appendix B, while Appendix A gives directions as to the terminology to be employed in order to ensure accuracy in reporting in the place of the sometimes slipshod, and consequently impaired—from the student's point of view—wording not infrequently to be found in printed articles or manuscript reports. It would savor of impertinence for an individual to attempt to criticize as a whole the matter contained in a book of this kind, a book prepared by an expert along lines laid down by, and, to a certain extent, with the assistance of, specialists in the various departments of its subject; and this is the more so in that the author has had the fortunate privilege of having her work receive its baptism of criticism— and that from some of those most competent to criticize it—before its publication. Two small suggestions, however, I would venture, with regard to the form of the book, which now corresponds, as to paper and binding, with the other publications of the Folk-Lore Society. One, that the "Introduction," the "Questionary," and the compendium of terminology, be at some time issued together, as a separate booklet, in order to help to bring into the ranks of the collectors of folklore some of those persons in whose lives old customs, old stories, and the like, play so usual a part that it is not realized by them that the life of the world is not wholly as their own, and that to them there have been bequeathed relics which are fast fading into thin ghosts or nothingness.

Bal Folk by Chris Shaw,Trevor Upham Pdf

Bal Folk was created from a selection tunes published as Massif Central Volumes 1 and 2. It has been completely revised and errors found in the original have been corrected. Copyright tunes had to be removed but a number of original compositions by Trevor Upham and Chris Shaw have been added. Trevor and Chris live in England but write tunes in the central French style. Trevor lived for many years in France and was very involved with the folk dance scene there, he writes some superb tunes which deserve to be better known. This book will be of interest to anyone who enjoys playing French music, or playing for French dancing. The tunes are suitable for melodeon, fiddle and accordion and many will fit within the range of bagpipes and hurdy gurdy. It contains the usual mix of mazurkas, valses, scottisches, two and three time bourrees, and polkas that are encountered at a Bal Folk in France. The majority of the tunes in this book come from the centre of France, the Berry, Bourbonnais and Auvergne regions, where there is a strong tradition of hurdy gurdy and bagpipe music. In addition, there are a few examples of tunes for other dances that one can occasionally encounter, for example the five time waltz from Alsace. It should not be seen as an academic work, but a useful source of good tunes. Also included are a number of tunes written in the French style by Trevor Upham and Chris Shaw, two musicians playing French music in England. In France the usual tuning used for a two row melodeon is C/G, whilst in England we prefer G/D. The melodeon in C/G tuning fits very well with the Auvergne tuned hurdy gurdy and bagpipes in C, when playing in C and G major. This is an instrument combination often used in France. It is for this reason that a number of tunes are written in C, however they can

Folk Song in England by Steve Roud Pdf

In Victorian times, England was famously dubbed the land without music - but one of the great musical discoveries of the early twentieth century was that England had a vital heritage of folk song and music which was easily good enough to stand comparison with those of other parts of Britain and overseas. Cecil Sharp, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Percy Grainger, and a number of other enthusiasts gathered a huge harvest of songs and tunes which we can study and enjoy at our leisure. But after over a century of collection and discussion, publication and performance, there are still many things we don't know about traditional song - Where did the songs come from? Who sang them, where, when and why? What part did singing play in the lives of the communities in which the songs thrived? More importantly, have the pioneer collectors' restricted definitions and narrow focus hindered or helped our understanding? This is the first book for many years to investigate the wider social history of traditional song in England, and draws on a wide range of sources to answer these questions and many more.
