Developmental Biology of Teleost Fishes by Yvette Kunz-Ramsay Pdf

In the compiling of this book, the vast literature dealing with the descriptive morphology, histology and cytology of teleost development has been combed and integrated. The book is divided into 21 chapters, starting with the egg and embryonic development up to hatching. This is followed by a description of ectodermal, mesodermal and entodermal derivatives and the development of various organs. The subject index, species index and the abundant illustrations add extra value to this long awaited book. Developmental Biology of Teleost Fishes will be a valuable tool for scientists and students in the fields of biology, developmental biology, molecular biology and fish biology.

Fish Development and Genetics by Gong Zhiyuan,Vladimir Korzh Pdf

The zebrafish is the most important fish model in developmental and genetic analyses. This book contains 19 review articles covering a broad spectrum of topics, from development to genetic tools. The contents range from early development, the role of maternal factors and gastrulation, to tissue differentiation and organogenesis, such as development of the organizer, notochord, floor plate, nervous system, somites, muscle, skeleton and endoderm. The genetic tools cover morpholino knock-down, transgenics, fish cloning, transposons and genome evolution. The book also includes two chapters on genome mapping and embryonic stem cells in medaka, another important model fish. Summarizing the state-of-the-art studies of the zebrafish model and focusing on the molecular aspects of development, this book is a valuable reference for students learning the basic aspects of the zebrafish model, and for researchers seeking resources in zebrafish research. Contents:The Role of Maternal Factors in Early Zebrafish Development (F Pelegri)Gastrulation in Zebrafish (F Ulrich & C-P Heisenberg)Development of the Zebrafish Organiser and Notochord (K A Thomas & D L Stemple)Formation and Functions of the Floor Plate (J Tian & K Sampath)Form and Function in the Zebrafish Nervous System (M Hendricks & S Jesuthasan)Development of the Primary Nervous System of the Zebrafish Embryo (U Strähle & V Korzh)Making Scents: Development and Function of the Olfactory Sensory System (K E Whitlock)Somites Segmentation: A View from Fish (H Takeda & Y Saga)Vertebrate Somite Development, Notch Signaling and Others (Y-J Jiang)Molecular Regulation of Fish Muscle Development and Growth (S J Du)Skeletogenesis in Zebrafish Danio rerio: Evolutionary and Developmental Aspects (S Fisher & P M Mabee)Endoderm Formation in Zebrafish (N B David et al.)Gene 'Knockdown' Approaches Using Unconventional Antisense Oligonucleotides (E Chen et al.)Transgenic Fish for Developmental Biology Studies (Z-Y Gong et al.)Cloning the Zebrafish (B Ju et al.)Applications of Transponsable Elements in Fish for Transgenesis and Functional Genomics (P B Hacketts et al.)Evolution of the Zebrafish Genome (J H Postlethwait)Medaka Genome Mappling for Functional Genomics (H Mitani et al.)Medaka Embryonic Stem Cells (Y-H Hong & M Schartl) Readership: Upper level undergraduates, graduate students, academics and researchers in cell & molecular biology, fish & marine biology and genetics. Maternal Control of Development in Vertebrates by Florence Louise Marlow Pdf

Eggs of all animals contain mRNAs and proteins that are supplied to or deposited in the egg as it develops during oogenesis. These maternal gene products regulate all aspects of oocyte development, and an embryo fully relies on these maternal gene products for all aspects of its early development, including fertilization, transitions between meiotic and mitotic cell cycles, and activation of its own genome. Given the diverse processes required to produce a developmentally competent egg and embryo, it is not surprising that maternal gene products are not only essential for normal embryonic development but also for fertility. This review provides an overview of fundamental aspects of oocyte and early embryonic development and the interference and genetic approaches that have provided access to maternally regulated aspects of vertebrate development. Some of the pathways and molecules highlighted in this review, in particular, Bmps, Wnts, small GTPases, cytoskeletal components, and cell cycle regulators, are well known and are essential regulators of multiple aspects of animal development, including oogenesis, early embryogenesis, organogenesis, and reproductive fitness of the adult animal. Specific examples of developmental processes under maternal control and the essential proteins will be explored in each chapter, and where known conserved aspects or divergent roles for these maternal regulators of early vertebrate development will be discussed throughout this review. Table of Contents: Introduction / Oogenesis: From Germline Stem Cells to Germline Cysts / Oocyte Polarity and the Embryonic Axes: The Balbiani Body, an Ancient Oocyte Asymmetry / Preparing Developmentally Competent Eggs / Egg Activation / Blocking Polyspermy / Cleavage/ Mitosis: Going Multicellular / Maternal-Zygotic Transition / Reprogramming: Epigenetic Modifications and Zygotic Genome Activation / Dorsal-Ventral Axis Formation before Zygotic Genome Activation in Zebrafish and Frogs / Maternal TGF-β and the Dorsal-Ventral Embryonic Axis / Maternal Control After Zygotic Genome Activation / Compensation by Stable Maternal Proteins / Maternal Contributions to Germline Establishment or Maintenance / Perspective / Acknowledgments / References

Living Embryos by Jack Cohen,Brendan Massey Pdf

Living Embryos: An Introduction to the Study of Animal Development covers the growth of an animal embryo, specifically the sequence developmental events of an egg. This book addresses the mammalian embryo as a homograph and demonstrates early vertebrate development mechanisms. Some of the topics covered in the book are the early embryology, development, and growth of the frog, mammals, chick, rabbit, arthropods, polychaetes, nematodes, molluscs, and tunicates. Other chapters deal with the formation of the nervous, muscular, and alimentary systems. These topics are followed by the analysis of the development of fishes. The discussion then shifts to the method of fertilization. The last chapters examine the formation of cleavage, cleavage geometry, embryonic membranes, and organization of the egg. The book can provide useful information to embryologists, biologists, students, and researchers.
