The Girl in Industry (Classic Reprint) by D. J. Collier Pdf

Excerpt from The Girl in Industry The problem of the adolescent at work is a very complex one; not only the economic, but also the educational, physiological, and biological reactions of industrial work have to be considered. The present work does not attempt anything like a com prehensive discussion of the subject; it is merely a small contribution to existing knowledge of the facts in regard to one section only the physiological effects of industrial work on growing girls. Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive (Classic Reprint) by German Woodhead Pdf

Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Sex in Industry by Azel Ames Pdf

Excerpt from Sex in Industry: A Plea for the Working-Girl Some two years since, having been commis sioned by the chief of the Bureau of Statistics of Labor of this Commonwealth, to make certain inquiries as to the conditions of homes and employments of working-people whereby their health might be unfavorably affected, I had my attention called, while visiting a factory near my home, to the marvellous rapidity of the digital manipulations required by the processes of a light manufacture conducted by girls. A reflec tion upon the possible physiological tendencies of such extreme celerity opened a wide door of inquisitive thought; and the interest thus awak ened, heightened by the immediately subsequent appearance of Prof. Edward H. Clarke's Sex in Education, which contained much bearing directly upon the subject, stimulated a wider study of the true relations sex sustains to industry. Women in Industry by Edith Abbott Pdf

Excerpt from Women in Industry: A Study in American Economic History I owe to two other friends, to Miss Clara E. Collet, M, Honorary Fellow of University College, Lon don, and senior investigator of women 's industries in 'he Board of Trade (labour Department), and to Dr. Frances Gardiner Davenport of the Department of Historical Research in the Carnegie Institution of Washington. To Miss Collet I am indebted, not for direct help in connection with the preparation of these chapters, but, in common with all students of the history and statistics of women's employment, for the invaluable work which she has done in this field. Four years ago, in our first published study, Dr. Breckinridge and I made public acknowledgment of the stimulus and help we had received from a study of Miss Col let's reports to the Board of Trade on the Employ ment of Women and Girls. Not only for these but for her reports on the same subject prepared for the Royal Commission on Labour as well as for her earlier investigations in connection with the preparation of Booth's Life and Labour of the People, and for her other brilliant and suggestive studies of women's work, all later students of the subject are under obli. The Film Industry (Classic Reprint) by Davidson Boughey Pdf

Excerpt from The Film Industry This book is neither a critical analysis nor a complete technical treatise, but just a brief and, it is hoped, clearly written survey of the youngest of the world's great industries - one which provides both education and amusement for many millions of people every week in the year, and one which is, to the average man and woman, veiled in mystery and romance. The success Of this series has proved conclusively that there are many people who desire knowledge of the kind given without wishing for a lengthy scientific treatise of a professional character, and it is to this growing section of the public that it is hoped this book will especially appeal. English Industrial Fiction of the Mid-Nineteenth Century by Stephen Knight Pdf

English Industrial Fiction of the Mid-Nineteenth Century discusses the valuable fiction written in mid-nineteenth-century Britain which represents the situations of the new breed of industrial workers, both the mostly male factory workers who operated in the oppressive mills of the midlands and north and, in other stories, the oppressed seamstresses who worked mostly in London in very poor and low-paid conditions. Beginning with a general introduction to workers’ fiction at the start of the period, this volume charts the rise of an identifiable genre of industrial fiction and the development of a substantial mode of seamstress fiction through the 1840s, including an analysis of novels by Benjamin Disraeli, Charles Kingsley, Elizabeth Gaskell and Charles Dickens, and more briefly Charlotte Bronte, Geraldine Jewsbury and George Eliot. This volume is essential reading for students and scholars of industrial fiction and nineteenth-century Britain, or those with an interest in the relationship between literature, society and politics.
