Are these the only works of Providence in us? What words suffice to praise or set them forth? Had we but understanding, should we ever cease hymning and blessing the Divine Power, both openly and in secret, and telling of His gracious gifts? Whether digging or ploughing or eating, should we not sing the hymn to God:

The name given by his parents, if one was given, is not known the word epiktetos in Greek simply means "acquired." He spent his youth as a slave in Rome to Epaphroditus, a very wealthy freedman of Nero. Epictetus studied Stoic philosophy under Musonius Rufus, as a slave. It is known that he became crippled, and although one source tells that his leg was deliberately broken by Epaphroditus, more reliable is the testimony of Simplicius who tells us that he had been lame from childhood. Roman-era ruins at Nicopolis It is not known how Epictetus obtained his freedom, but eventually he began to teach philosophy at Rome. Around 93 AD Domitian banished all philosophers from Rome, and ultimately, from Italy, and Epictetus traveled to Nicopolis in Epirus, Greece, where he founded a philosophical school.

Even though fate played a role in events, Epictetus still believed that individuals were responsible for their own actions.Although he was born into slavery and endured a permanent physical disability, Epictetus maintained that all people are free to control their lives and to live in harmony with nature. We will always be happy, he argued, if we learn to desire that things should be exactly as they are.

The Golden Sayings Of Epictetus by Epictetus Pdf

Epictetus was a Greek philosopher who lived in the first century AD and taught a philosophy known as Stoicism. The Golden Sayings is a collection of his most memorable and insightful teachings, presented as aphorisms or short maxims. In these sayings, Epictetus expounds on the virtues of self-mastery, inner peace, and detachment from material goods. Although he lived two thousand years ago, his wisdom remains relevant today, and his influence can be felt in the works of later philosophers like Marcus Aurelius and Michel de Montaigne. This book is a great introduction to Stoicism and to one of its most eloquent proponents. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
