Stories of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by Everett T. Tomlinson Pdf

Excerpt from Stories of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 A great history does not of necessity always mean a long history. The war of the American Revolution may not be great when it is considered in the light of a war; but it certainly is great as an event. Those heroic struggles of our fore fathers are as worthy of remembrance as the country they bequeathed us is worthy of preserva tion. Indeed, the two in a sense may be said to be joined. The price paid for an article some times enhances the value of the possession in the eyes of the possessor. The education of an American citizen to-day may be said not to be complete without a due appreciation of the aims, struggles, and efforts of those who have bequeath'ed their possessions to us. A heritage has no less value when we realize what it has cost in life and in sacrifice. Our ancestors lifted up a new banner before the gaze of the world. It is ours to hold it up. And no country needs a strong patriotic feeling among its people so much as does a republic. But patriotism, to be valuable, must be intelligent; and there can be no intelligence without knowledge. Inspiration to be patriotic can best be incited by learning of and from those who were themselves patriots. One such man as George Washington is worth more to our land than a horde of men who can only make money. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Naval History of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by Gardner W. Allen Pdf

Excerpt from A Naval History of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 A few new Continental vessels went into commis sion or into active service, the most important of which were the frigates Alliance and Confederacy, of thirty-two guns each the first was built in Mas sachusetts, the other in Connecticut. The Confeder acy was a hundred and thirty-three feet long, with an extreme breadth of thirty-five feet, six inches, and was designed to carry twenty-eight guns on the main deck, six on the quarter deck, and two on the forecastle. These ships, which had been authorized by Congress two years or more before, encountered the usual difficulties and delays in getting ready for sea. The Marine Committee in their efforts to expedite matters issued many orders which, owing to slow communication and uncertainty as to the condition of vessels and the state of affairs in dis tant ports, were frequently modified or changed. February 10, it was arranged that the Confederacy, Captain Harding, then at New London, should make a short cruise in Long Island Sound with two vessels of the Connecticut navy. Later she was to join the Queen of France in a cruise along the At lantic coast, in which the Ranger was to take part. The American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by John Fiske Pdf

Excerpt from The American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 It is an obvious comment upon the present work, that a story of the American Revolution which stops with the sur render oi Cornwallis and the consequent fall of Lord North's ministry is incomplete. One might reply, in general, that any historical narrative must needs be incomplete wherever it may happen to stop; but on the present occasion a more suitable answer is that the story is continued in my book entitled The Critical Period of American History, the first chapter of which deals with the Results of Yorktown. The text of this edition has been thoroughly revised, and in many places new matter has been added. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The American Revolution, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by George Otto Trevelyan Pdf

Excerpt from The American Revolution, Vol. 2 The news of Lexington took Six weeks to reach Eng land, and came by an unusual channel. Massachusetts was eager to have the first word, but careful that that word should be an accurate one. A committee ap pointed by her Provincial Congress held Sittings in the district which had been the scene of hostilities, and took a large mass of evidence on oath. An account of the battle, addressed to the Inhabitants of Great Britain, was drawn up by another committee, over which Joseph Warren himself presided. The narrative was studiously moderate. The successes of the minute-men, and the disasters of the British, were related briefly, and in terms below the truth; as if the writers could not dwell with satisfaction on the details of a conflict between fellow countrymen. Americans, (so it was stated, ) had no quarrel with their sovereign, whose person, family, and crown they, were as willing to defend as ever. But they would face death rather than tamely submit to the persecutions Of a cruel ministry, and looked forward with assured hope to the time when, in a constitutional connection with the mother-country, Englishmen on both Sides of the Atlantic would live, always and all together, as one free, united, and happy people. Domestic History of the American Revolution (Classic Reprint) by Ellet Pdf

Excerpt from Domestic History of the American Revolution To guard against misapprehension, it is proper to say, that in this attempt to present in a new and interesting light the history of our struggle for national existence, there is nothing of fanciful embellishment. I hold in just aversion the to mancing trash under which, at the present day, the simple and picturesque - because simple - realities of our American story seem in danger of being buried. Not only has no aid of fiction been employed, but no traditional matter has been introduced, unless sustained by indisputable authority. The Women of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by Elizabeth F. Ellet Pdf

Excerpt from The Women of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 None who take an interest in the history of Washington can fail to desire some knowledge of her who shared his thoughts and plans, and was associated with him in the great events of his life. Few women have been called to move, in the drama of existence, amid scenes so varied and imposing; and few have sustained their part with so much dignity and discretion. In the shades of retirement, or the splendor of eminent station, she was the same unostentatious, magnanimous woman; through the gloom of adverse fortune she walked by the side of the Chief, ascending with him the difficult path Heaven had opened before him; and when standing with him on the summit, in the full light of his power and renown, the eyes of her spirit looked still upward, seeking in the smile of the Supreme a reward which earthly honors could not bestow. Though the life of Mrs. Washington was a changeful one, and had its full measure of sorrow and joy, it affords little material for the biographer. Excerpt from The True History of the American Revolution The purpose of this history of the Revolution is to use the original authorities rather more frankly than has been the practice with our historians. They appear to have thought it advisable to omit from their narratives a great deal which, to me, seems essential to a true picture. A Naval History of the American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by Gardner Weld Allen Pdf

Excerpt from A Naval History of the American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 IN its various aspects our struggle for independence has from the beginning excited the attention and received the critical study of historical scholars, and is a never-failing source of discussion and spec ulation. From social, commercial, political, diplo matic, and military points of view this interesting field has been worked over most thoroughly. Yet the maritime activities of the war, excepting the episodes, have been subjected to no ve inquiry, although the importance of their bearing upon military movements, foreign re lations, and commercial intercourse is manifest. In the archives of our country and in those of England and France, as well as in private collections, news papers, and elsewhere, will be found a large amount of material hitherto only partially utilized. In the preparation of this work these original sources of information have been explored in the effort to meet in some measure the present need of more adequate treatment. Our Struggle for the Fourteenth Colony, Vol. 2 by Justin H. Smith Pdf

Excerpt from Our Struggle for the Fourteenth Colony, Vol. 2: Canada and the American Revolution Zion had walls; and here a line of Old batteries and fresh-looking palisades crested the precipice. To the left of the Castle, the rising clifl' mounted to its climax in a rounded pinnacle of dark slate, studded with sparkling quartz crystals, known as Cape Diamond, from which the rigging of the ships looked like spider's web; and here stood a small square fort, called the citadel, joined by a sloping curtain to a very high cavalier. A fortified wind mill surmounted the cavalier; while on the summit Of the cape hung a sort of iron cage, in which the bodies of strangled felons had formerly been left for the-winds, the rains, and the birds. Below, on a shelf some fifty or sixty feet from the top, stood a blockhouse and beyond almost wholly ought of sight - were hints of walls, towers, and bastions on the farther Side of the town.
