Excerpt from The Journal of Cutaneous Diseases, Including Syphilis, Vol. 35: Official Organ of the American Dermatological Association; August, 1917In doing the Gel test, all the sera were subjected to the ammonium sulphate test, while about 40 sera were subjected to the acetic acid thorium sulphate test. In our experience the latter test is easier to read and I think will be found more reliable.In this series of 87 sera, there were 59 who gave a history of syphilis or had luetic lesions; practically all were under treatment. All these sera gave positive 'wassermann reactions, while only 47 gave positive Gel tests.
