The Last Shepherd by Wilbur Smith Pdf

The Last Shepherd tells how at the beginning of the Common Era, Palestine was in chaos socially, politically, and spiritually. Political turmoil during the life of Jesus affected his ministry and caused him deep concern that he was not reaching the people with God's message of love. Leaders in Palestine had been corrupted with Greek and Roman influence, causing a growing divide between the rich and the poor. Pharisees were fighting the trend by demanding a harsh adherence to Mosaic law laid down in Leviticus, which caused a greater burden on the poor, who could not follow the law of sacrifices for atonement. The people were desperately hoping for the messiah. After Herod Antipas had John the Baptist beheaded, Jesus knew of the real dangers he faced by those in power and by the Pharisees who saw thousands following him as a loss of their influence. After the second year of his ministry, Jesus knew that there were plots to have him killed. As a result, he shifted his ministry into areas away from Galilee and Judea, and he pleaded with people not to call him the messiah, the savior the people had been hoping for. The Last Shepherd is a story of how politics during the life and ministry of Jesus influenced his mission. But the gospels give only two of the events recorded in Luke 13:1-5. This novel records them all.

The Last Commandment by Scott Shepherd Pdf

A transatlantic serial killer thriller with a twist of Biblical proportions. Christmas in London: a period of joy and togetherness. Not for Metropolitan Police Commander Austin Grant, though. Three dead bodies have turned up on his patch, and the only thing they have in common is a number carved into their foreheads. With the victims including a professor of ancient mythology, a sculptor of curious idols, and lead vocalist of The Blasphemers. It seems the killer is meting out their own version of Biblical justice, punishing those who transgress the Ten Commandments. With seven commandments left, Grant puts the Met's best detectives on the case. But soon enough, a fourth victim turns up. In New York City. It appears Grant has a transatlantic manhunt on his hands. Can he stop this terrifying zealot before they strike again? Reviews for The Last Commandment: 'Gory but gripping.' Daily Mail 'An enthralling mystery.' Karin Slaughter 'A gem of a thriller, not to be missed.' Michael Koryta 'A real corker.' Booklist 'A riveting and wondrously satisfying thriller.' May Cobb 'Ingeniously constructed and breathlessly told... Scott Shepherd at his gripping best.' Charles Ardai

The Shepherd of Hermas as Scriptura Non Grata by Robert D. Heaton Pdf

Composed within the first Christian century by a Roman named Hermas, the Shepherd remains a mysterious and underestimated book to scholars and laypeople alike. Robert D. Heaton argues that early Christians mainly received the Shepherd positively and accepted it unproblematically alongside texts that would ultimately be canonized, requiring decisive actions to exclude it from the late-emerging collection of texts now known as the New Testament. Freshly evaluating the evidence for its popularity in patristic treatises, manuscript recoveries, and Christian material culture, Heaton propounds an interpretation of the Shepherd of Hermas as a book meant to guide his readers toward salvation. Ultimately, Heaton depicts the loss of the Shepherd from the closed catalogue of Christian scriptures as a deliberate constrictive move by the fourth-century Alexandrian bishop Athanasius, who found it useless for his political, theological, and ecclesiological objectives and instead characterized it as a book favored by his heretical enemies. While the book’s detractors succeeded in derailing its diffusion for centuries, the survival of the Shepherd today attests that many dissented from the church’s final judgment about Hermas’s text, which portends a version of early Christianity that was definitively overridden by devotion to Christ himself, rather than principally to his virtues.
