The Life of James McCosh by James McCosh Pdf

James McCosh (1811-1894) was the last major representative of the Scottish Common Sense school of philosophy. His autobiography gives an account of his life and intellectual development at Glasgow and Aberdeen universities, before becoming Professor at Queen's College, Belfast. His account of his Princeton years (he became President of the College of New Jersey in 1868) gives many valuable insights into the early years of that institution. Also included is an extensive bibliography by Joseph H. Dulles.

The Life of James McCosh by James McCosh Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of James McCosh: A Record Chiefly Autobiographical To have seen a century rise and wane; to have spent threescore years of active, influential life in its very noon; to have moulded in some degree the thought of two generations in three lands; to have shared in Scotland's latest struggle for religious liberty; to have wrought in the great enterprise of Ireland's intellectual emancipation; to have led a powerful educational movement in America, and to have regenerated one of her most ancient universities, - these are the titles of James McCosh to public distinction. He was a philosopher, but no dreamer; a scholar, but no recluse; a preacher, but no ideologue; a teacher, but no martinet; he was a thinker, a public leader, and a practical man of affairs. For these sufficient reasons those who were closely associated with him during the last three years of his life determined to secure, if possible, a memorial of his many activities. Princeton in the Nation's Service by Paul Charles Kemeny Pdf

This book argues against the conventional idea that Protestantism effectively ceased to play an important role in American higher education around the end of the nineteenth century. Choosing Princeton as an example, P. C. Kemeny shows that Protestantism was not abandoned but rather modified to conform to the educational values and intellectual standards of the modern university. Drawing upon a wealth of neglected primary sources, such as correspondence, diaries, lecture notes, and publications and papers of presidents, professors, students, and trustees, the author sheds new light upon the role of religion in higher education.

Rational Piety and Social Reform in Glasgow by Stephen Cowley Pdf

James Mylne (1757-1839) taught moral philosophy and political economy in Glasgow from 1797 to the mid-1830s. Rational Piety and Social Reform in Glasgow offers readers Mylne's biography, a summary of his lectures on moral philosophy and political economy, several interpretative essays, and a collation of his introductory lecture. Mylne's moral philosophy lectures cover the intellectual and active powers of man and offer an account of his duties to God, neighbor, and self. He diverges from the "moral sense" and "common sense" traditions associated with Francis Hutcheson and Thomas Reid in Glasgow. He reinstates reason as the guiding principle of conscience and argues for utility as the predominant criterion of morality. Mylne was also active among the Whig "friends of Mr. Fox" and in the Glasgow Reform Association, for his theory of the sovereignty of reason drove his view of political reform and the concept of value in his lectures on political economy. In a criticism of Adam Smith, Mylne interprets use-value as prior to exchange value, founding it in lawful desires identifiable by a merchant community. Mylne's political opinions and activity among local political reformers and literary societies exemplify the Glasgow Whig tradition.

Dictionary of American Religious Biography by Henry W. Bowden Pdf

The first edition of this award-winning reference, published in 1977, contained 425 biographical profiles of the most significant American religious figures. This new edition includes profiles for 125 additional people, and the earlier biographical sketches have been revised and updated. The volume includes religious leaders who died before July 1, 1992. Among its pages are entries for reformers, philosophers, social activists, doers and dreamers. While many of the people are mainstream, white ordained clergymen, many more stand outside traditional denominations and reflect the cultural and religious diversity of modern America. The result is a systematic overview of 400 years of American religion from the colonial period to the present day. Each profile begins with a capsule summary of the chief events in that person's life. The biographical essay that follows places the basic facts of the figure's life within the larger context of American religious history. A bibliography of the most significant works by and about the figure concludes each entry. Appendices at the end of the work categorize each individual by religious denomination and by place of birth.
