The Northern suburbs are amongst the most af uent in this respect. Before the aristocratic class acquired the tendency to spread itself over the ats of the West, the City itself and the hills which arose on its northern confines were the chosen abodes of its nobles and wealthy merchants. Hampstead and High gate bear even to-day, amid all the changes of the last two centuries, the traces of this former predilection of the af uent dwellers in and frequenters of the metropolis and Islington, if possessing fewer of the residences of the nobles of secular rank, is still more abounding in the memories of the intel lectual heads of society. Its easy approach at all times from the City had made it at once the resort and the abode of a great number and a great variety of those who lived and worked there.
