The Correspondence of Wolfgang Capito by Wolfgang Capito Pdf

Wolfgang Capito (1478–1541), a leading Christian Hebraist and Catholic churchman who converted to Protestantism, was a pivotal figure in the history of the Reformation. After serving as a professor of theology in Basel and adviser to the archbishop of Mainz, he moved to Strasbourg, which became, largely due to his efforts, one of the most important centres of the Reformation movement after Wittenberg. This penultimate volume in the series is a fully annotated translation of Capito’s existing correspondence covering the years 1532–36 and culminating in the Wittenberg Concord between the Lutheran and Reformed churches. The correspondence includes Capito’s efforts, alongside those of his colleague Martin Bucer, to negotiate that compromise. Other letters deal with local, political, financial, and doctrinal questions, as well as Capito’s personal life. The letters demonstrate the importance of Capito and his colleagues in providing advice in matters concerning the churches in southern Germany and Switzerland, but also regarding the evangelicals in neighbouring France. Milton Kooistra’s annotation provides historical context by identifying classical, patristic, and biblical quotations as well as persons and places. Continuing in the tradition of rigorous scholarship established in Volume 1 and Volume 2, this volume provides crucial details on the evolution of Capito’s thought and its contribution to the Reformation movement.

Delphi Complete Works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Illustrated) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Pdf

Widely regarded as the greatest German literary figure of the modern era, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a prolific author of novels, epic and lyric poetry, prose, plays, scientific treatises and autobiography. A literary celebrity by the age of 25, Goethe achieved enormous success with his first novel, ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’. Inspiring the imagination of a generation, it was the first novel of the Sturm und Drang movement, which exalted nature, feeling, and human individualism, seeking to overthrow Rationalism. ‘Faust’, Goethe’s two-part dramatic masterpiece, is regarded as the supreme work of his later years and is often cited as Germany’s greatest contribution to world literature. Based on the traditional theme of the eponymous scholar making a pact with the demon Mephistopheles, the drama explores themes that encapsulate the fullest expression of the European Romantic movement, to which Goethe was an early and major contributor. This comprehensive eBook presents Goethe’s complete fictional works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. The Sleep of the Righteous by Wolfgang Hilbig Pdf

Doppelgängers, a murderer's guilt, pulp noir, fanatical police, and impossible romances--these are the pieces from which German master Wolfgang Hilbig builds a divided nation battling its demons. Delving deep into the psyches of both East and West Germany, The Sleep of the Righteous reveals a powerful, apocalyptic account of the century-defining nation's trajectory from 1945 to 1989. From a youth in a war-scarred industrial town to wearying labor as a factory stoker, surreal confrontations with the Stasi, and, finally, a conflicted escape to the West, Hilbig creates a cipher that is at once himself and so many of his fellow Germans. Evoking the eerie bleakness of films like Tarkovsky's Stalker and The Lives of Others, this titan of German letters combines the Romanticism of Poe with the absurdity of Kafka to create a visionary, somber statement on the ravages of history and the promises of the future.

U-Boat Ace by Jordan Vause Pdf

An exceptional figure in the history of the German Navy, Wolfgang Luth was one of only seven men in the Wehrmacht to win Germany's highest combat decoration, the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. At one time or another he operated in almost every theater of the undersea war, from Norway to the Indian Ocean, and became the second most successful German U-boat ace in World War II, sinking more than 220,000 tons of merchant shipping. A master in the art of military leadership, Luth was the youngest man to be appointed to the rank of captain and the youngest to become commandant of the German Naval Academy. Nevertheless, his accomplishments were overshadowed by those of other great aces, such as Prien, Kretschmer, and Topp. The publication of this book in hardcover in 1990 marked the first comprehensive study of Luth's life. Jordan Vause corrects the long neglect by providing an entertaining and authoritative biography that places the ace in the context of the war at sea. This new paperback edition includes corrections and additional information collected by the author over the past decade.
