The Physical Geography of Wisconsin by Lawrence Martin Pdf

The immensely varied topography of Wisconsin provides examples of nearly every important physiographic process and topographic form. In the Driftless Area to the southwest, wind and water have weathered and carved away the countryside; along the Mississippi and other rivers are found most of the essential features of stream erosion and deposition; in the north and east glaciers have ground away the hills and left their mark on the plains and swamps. The Physical Geography of Wisconsin, reprinted from the second edition, 1932, of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Bulletin No. XXXVI (1916), offers a clear explanation of these and many other physiographical processes to the student and amateur geographer alike. The topography of the state is discussed in detail and, where necessary, related to its human geography; and the author has carefully explained and indexed all unfamiliar terms. The book is well supplied with maps, charts, and illustrations, and will be an excellent supplementary reader or guide in field trips for geography courses at all levels.

Wisconsin Its Geology and Physical Geography by E. C. Case Pdf

Excerpt from Wisconsin Its Geology and Physical Geography: A Popular Account of the Natural Features and Climate of the State for Students and General Readers No state of the union presents features more diverse or of wider interest to the student or traveler than Wisconsin. Within its borders are found rocks so old that they perhaps represent the crust formed on the surface of the cooling globe and with them lie the deposits of the last of all the geological epochs, the glacial deposits of the geological yesterday. In the north cen tral part is the great central massif of crystalline igneous rocks and the highly altered sediments which, tortured and twisted by the mountain making forces, now shelter the mines of iron; in the southwestern portion are the layers of undisturbed sediment ary rocks with the mines of lead and zinc and the quarries of building stone. Wisconsin is classic ground in the annals of Geology and Physical Geography, for within its borders have been made many steps in settling the important problems in connection with the highly complex science of glaciology and the scarcely less intricate questions of the deposition of the ores of iron, lead, and zinc. Few regions of equal size present so many points of inter est and beauty to travelers. The scenery of the state is not so grand as that of a mountainous country, but the unique beauty of the Dells of the Wisconsin, the St. Croix river, and the Devils lake; the gem-like beauty of thousands of small glacial lakes; the solemn grandeur of the evergreen forests, rival in the quiet satisfaction that they give the more majestic beauty of Alpine mountains. The author has lived in Wisconsin ten years. During the summers of 1907 and 1908 he devoted nearly all of the college vacation to field work on the physical geography and glacial geology of the state. The expense of the first season's work was met by the United States Geological Survey, the second by the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey. In subsequent years he has spent many weeks in field work in connection with his teaching at the University of Wisconsin, taking parties of students for half-day, all-day, and longer excursions, including two periods of four weeks each during the summers of 1913 and 1914. In addition three days were spent in the field in 1913 with Samuel Weidman, W. O. Hotchkiss, and E. F. Bean, five days in 1914 with E. O. Ulrich, W. O. Hotchkiss, and F. T. Thwaites, three days the same year with W. O. Hotchkiss, E. F. Bean, and O. W. Wheelwright, and two weeks in 1915 with F. T. Thwaites and Walter Schoewe. The writing of this book was undertaken in the winter of 1908-9, resumed during the summer of 1912, and completed during the summer and autumn of 1915. Much of the subject matter has been tried out by presentation to students in a university course on The Geography of Wisconsin, first offered in 1910 and repeated during several semesters and summer sessions by the author and, more recently, by Prof. E. F. Bean. The author has tried to make the book simple. Most of the discussion is without technicality. Nevertheless there are ideas and phenomena which will be new to some. The Geography of the Region About Devil's Lake, Vol. 5 by Rollin D. Salisbury Pdf

Excerpt from The Geography of the Region About Devil's Lake, Vol. 5: And the Dalles of the Wisconsin, With Some Notes on Its Surface Geology This report has to do with the physical geography of the area in south central Wisconsin, shown on the accompanying sketch map, Plate I. The region is of especial interest, both because of its striking scenery, and because it illustrates clearly many of the principles involved in the evolution of the geography of land surfaces. A Memoir on the History and Physical Geography of Minnesota (Classic Reprint) by Henry R. Schoolcraft Pdf

Excerpt from A Memoir on the History and Physical Geography of Minnesota Volney appears to have been the first observer to notice the prevalence of a valley current, from the tropical lati tudes up the Mississippi - a remark in which he is sustained, at later dates, by Dr drake and Dr. Hildreth. It is evident, from the scanty materials we possess, that this gulf current does not Spend its force until it has well nigh reached the southern terminus of the Itasca summit. It is certain that the extreme upper Mississippi escapes those icy winds from Hudson's and Batfin's bays, which are often felt, during the Spring months, in northern Michigan and north ern Wisconsin. The same latitudes which cross the lake country, give a milder climate in the valley of the upper Mississippi. One of the causes of this phenomenon has probably been noticed above. Others will doubtless be found by a scientific scrutiny of its meteorology. Mr. Epsy will enlighten us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Beginning at the southeastern corner of the state the eastern border is formed by the shores of Lake Michigan and Green Bay as far north as the mouth of the Menominee river. Excerpt from High School Physical Geography While the principles of Physical Geography belong to the earth as a whole, and type cases are cited from all regions, the greater emphasis is put on our continent. A separate chapter on North America would pass our limit of space, but when the entire text has been read, all the greater features of the continent will have received attention. Field and Laboratory Note Book in Physical Geography (Classic Reprint) by F. A. Merrill Pdf

Excerpt from Field and Laboratory Note Book in Physical Geography Professor Merrill adds a manual to the list that appears to fill a need in the schools arising from the fact that some of the manuals already published are too elementary and some are too far advanced. That is, some of them require too much purely mechanical work, giving the impression that the object is to occupy the hands of the pupil regardless of whether the exercise illustrates any principles or leads to any conclusions. The other class of manuals presumes too much on the previous knowledge and experience of the pupil for the early years of the school. This gap between the two kinds of manuals appears to be filled better by Professor Merrill's book than by any other that I have seen. It likewise is wider in its scope and covers the Whole field of Physical Geography more thoroughly than any other. It is a step in the right direction and I hope it may prove serviceable to all who use it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
