The representation of race and indigeneity in "Samson and Delilah" and "Coonardoo" by David Fußinger Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Cologne, course: Reading Post-colonial Australia , language: English, abstract: When we think of Australia, we associate certain images, experiences or even stereotypes with the country that is at the same time a continent, located on the southern hemisphere of the world. Indigenous people, the so-called Aborigines, modern and popular cities, beautiful beaches and an exotic flora and fauna and certain sights, such as Ayers Rock for example, account for a stereotypical representation of the land which in fact holds more appeal if you only take a closer look. These associations are very superficial and originate from a Eurocentric perspective, a term that will appear again later in this essay. Whether you regard Australia and its outline on the map as being on the southern hemisphere for example, simply depends from which angle of vision one looks at the country. Since the emergence of the Mercator Atlas, a certain view of the world has been established. Today, this view is still perceived as dominant and correct and is supposed to reflect reality. It’s the underlying ideology of western European countries whose ideas of structuring the world by mapping and timing have also influenced the Australian continent. More importantly, the colonists defined their identity by demarcating them from other cultures. What didn’t conform to European standards wasn’t perceived right and therefore had to be changed in order to adapt to conventional norms. Even today the connection between Australia and its former ruling British center and the impact of colonialism on post-colonial Australia becomes visible in everyday life and is also manifested in cultural discourses such as literature and film production. The aim of this essay is to give an outline of the terms imperialism, colonialism and post-colonialism, their relationship and influence on the colonized country Australia and its impact upon the representation of indigeneity and race. Before concrete representation of characteristics that have to do with indigeneity and race will be examined, the reader will be provided with some background information to better understand the sometimes conflicting topic and its deep-set causes. The term representation will also be explained in detail, because it entails a process of seeing and perceiving the world from a dominant perspective that explains a certain depiction of instances such as the indigenous people. On the basis of the movie Samson and Delilah and the novel Coonardoo the reader will experience the power of representation by language, silence ...

Indigenous Identity in Witi Ihimaera's "Whale Rider" and Chinua Achebe's Fiction by Annemarie Pabel Pdf

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine", language: English, abstract: In both Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Witi Ihimaera’s The Whale Rider indigenous identity is a central topic. Yet, it is challenged by the advent of colonization or, in the latter case, by the fusion of ancient tradition and modernism. As such, the aim of this paper is to analyse the literary representation of indigeneity in these novels using Stuart Hall’s dual definition in order to show how indigenous identity develops at the backdrop of colonization and what this means for the concept of identity in a postcolonial context. [...] Subsequently, attention will be drawn to the ways in which the individual is representative of indigenous identity and how this relates to the dynamics between community and individual. This part will contrast the idea of a stable self with a transformative one and thus also establish a connection to the succeeding analysis of diaspora identities in Things Fall Apart, which are based on constant progress. [...] The results will then provide the basis for a discussion of relocation and hybridity to subsequently contextualize them in the concept of diaspora identities and, more generally, postcolonialism. Although the focus of the analysis is on Things Fall Apart the background of the last chapter will be used as an occasion for a brief discussion of the second part of his trilogy, No Longer at Ease. After this, a similarly structured analysis of Witi Ihimaera’s The Whale Rider will be pursued. Firstly, the literary representation of features of oral tradition and orality in general will be examined before attention is directed towards myth as a major constituent of Maori identity and its use in the novel.[...]To embed the representation of identity in the broader concept of postcolonialism, the novel will then be discussed in terms of rewriting. Nevertheless, the aim of this chapter will not be a comparative approach of the ancient pretext as a basis for the modern novel. How have Western influences and elements of globalization been interwoven in the narration? And how do these contribute to rewriting? The result will be drawn on to answer these questions of the significance of rewriting and relocating for the concept of cultural identity.[...] The purpose of this comparison is to clarify the major differences and similarities which is a prerequisite of the contextualization of the concept of identity in postcolonialism as will be done in the conclusion.

Passionate Histories by Frances Peters-Little,Ann Curthoys,John Docker Pdf

This book examines the emotional engagements of both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people with Indigenous history. The contributors are a mix of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous scholars, who in different ways examine how the past lives on in the present, as myth, memory, and history. Each chapter throws fresh light on an aspect of history-making by or about Indigenous people, such as the extent of massacres on the frontier, the myth of Aboriginal male idleness, the controversy over Flynn of the Inland, the meaning of the Referendum of 1967, and the policyand practice of Indigenous child removal.

Chinua Achebe’s "Things Fall Apart". Read in Modernistic Terms by Anonim Pdf

Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Literature - Modern Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Tubingen, language: English, abstract: Chinua Achebe’s novel "Things Fall Apart" is a work that in a certain way depicts contemporary developments: Published in 1958, Achebe describes events in the period of the early transition phase of British colonization of Nigeria – roughly, around 1900 – referring to Okonkwo, the protagonist, and the Igbo, a native ethnic group. Both are subject to fundamental changes, but to what extent can these changes be expressed in literary terms? Are there certain markers that can be used to identify tendencies, for example modernism? This investigation will be the subject of the following essay.

The Politics of (M)Othering by Obioma Nnaemeka Pdf

This collection is a study of African literature framed by the central, and multi-faceted, idea of 'mother' - motherland, mothertongue, motherwit, motherhood, mothering - looking at the paradoxical location of (m)other as both central and marginal. Whilst the volume stands as a sustained feminist analysis, it engages feminist theory itself by showing how issues in feminism are, in African literature, recast in different and complex ways.

Chinua Achebe: European-African Frictions by Sener Saltürk Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Duisburg-Essen, language: English, abstract: [...] Although there is quite a number of reasonable arguments for not welcoming Turkey to the European “family”, such as financial as well as political and ethical, the majority of Turkish people consider prejudices against Turks as the actual reason for their rejection: they are (culturally) too different and more than the half of the European citizens are against a Turkish membership in the EU. Instead, a “privileged partnership” is being proposed by some conservative European governments (or opposing parties such as the German Christian Democratic party), instead of a full membership. I think “full” needs to be emphasised here because it means a real and well-meant friendship, a step closer to becoming a family member one day rather than a mere political (or strategical) ally. Well, family implies that there are less differences, that one is almost alike. There are many European tenets as well as traditional views which hinder an honest dialogue since Europe has yet to rid itself of some of its dangerous ideas (“maleficent” fictions) which set the world ablaze in the 20th century. Neither Nigeria is honestly acknowledged, nor is (in the minds of many a European critic) Achebe’s writing universal5, nor is Turkey’s fourty-year old endeavour to become a full European member acceptable. There is, intellectually, a problem on the part of Europe to accept the idea of equality which Achebe has been persistently trying to point out both in his novels and in his essays (which is the same reason, I think, why Turkey is so hard done by): feeling of superiority. That is why Achebe’s books lack the quality of universal European (or Western) books and is only applicable to Nigeria and likewise the reason for Turkey being a second-rate country. Both of these concepts reveal classical European ideas that will – in all probability – prove to be false during the course of the twenty-first century. In order to support my thesis, which I admit sounds far-fetched at first glance, I will refer to Chinua Achebe’s accounts on colonial criticism and, wherever possible, compare them to the recent issue in European dealings with the Other, i.e. the Turk. I will later on focus on the novels “Arrow of God” and “A Man of the People”, particularly on the aspect of religion in “Arrow of God” and the post-colonial phenomena of Nigeria in “A Man of the People”.

The History Wars by Stuart Macintyre,Anna Clark Pdf

'The History Wars is very important. The book will sit on the shelves of libraries as a code stone to help people understand the motivations of players in today's contemporary debate. It sheds light on the political battle which is carried on in the pubs and on the footpaths about who we are and what has become of us.' andmdash; Hon. Paul Keating, Prime Minister of Australia, 1991-1996 The nation's history has probably never been more politicised than it is today. Politicians, journalists, columnists, academics and Australians from all walks of life argue passionately andmdash; and often, ideologically andmdash; about the significance of the national story: the cherished ideal of the 'fair go', the much contested facts of Indigenous dispossession, the Anzac legend, and the nation's strategic alliance with the United States. Historians have become both combatants and casualties in this war of words. In The History Wars, Stuart Macintyre and Anna Clark explore how this intense public debate has polarised the nation and paralysed history departments. This edition includes a new afterword by Stuart Macintyre which recounts, with rueful irony, the outbreak of controversy that followed the book's original publication, and the further light it shed on the uses and abuses of Australian history.

Destination Branding: An Analysis of the Swedish Destination Image Representation and the Perception on the German Market by Doreen Kupke Pdf

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Tourism, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Heide, language: English, abstract: Destinations are one of the tourism industries biggest brands. Nowadays, travelers are overwhelmed with places, which fit in their holiday scheme. The tourism market is crowded by destinations and the outcome is the substitutability of places. (Pike, 2005) Destination branding is a way to differentiate a destination from its existing competitors. Branding a country is a complex and multilevel business. One of the core aspects in destination branding is to identify and differentiate a destination through to a positive destination image. The destination image is a crucial part in the travelers' decision making process and verifiable influence the tourist behavior. Therefore the destination image has become one of the major concepts in destination marketing. Special focus is given to the destination image theory, which is a major aspect in destination branding. (Echtner & Ritchie, 2003; Qu et al., 2011; Wang & Pizam, 2011) Just as product brands, destination brands are living entities. They have to be managed continuously and changed over time, to ensure a fit to environmental changes. (Wang & Pizam, 2011) Sweden has therefore developed a national branding and sales strategy for the tourism industry to implement until 2020 and fully launched in 2013. (Gaßmann, 2013) A part of this strategy is the creation of special themes to present a holistic Sweden image and destination brand. (Communication Guide, 2013) Among others, this strategy will be used to compare the presented and advertised Sweden image with the image perception on the German source market, to analyze compliance or incongruity. Germany is an interesting and important source market for the Swedish tourism industry. According to the research of the UNWTO, Germany is one of the biggest spenders in the tourism industry in 2011 (UNWTO, 2012). Based to the results from IBIS, the Swedish Border Survey about foreign visitors in Sweden, Germany hold the fourth place, after Norway, Finland and Denmark considering the amount of travelers to the country in 2011, with 1.796.016 visitors (IBIS, 2012). Taking this into account, presenting a positive, fitting and attractive country image has to be one of Sweden's main aims. [...]
