The Seabees at Gulfport by Gina L. Nichols Pdf

In June 1942, the U.S. Navy established an advance base depot in Gulfport because of its uncrowded deepwater port, rail access, open land, and a tepid climate that permitted training and open port facilities year-round. The base became the southern home for the Seabees and was ideal for shipping construction materiel and men to the Caribbean or the Pacific via the Panama Canal. Since the base reopened in March 1966, Seabees have deployed from Gulfport to serve during major conflicts as well as in peacetime. Seabees from Gulfport played an integral part in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and more recently deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq to assist in local construction efforts to rebuild both countries. Seabees assist thousands each year in international humanitarian projects while still calling Gulfport home.

SEABEES: NATIONAL INSTRUMENT OF POWER PROJECTION (2013) INTRODUCTION: INTRODUCTION The Seabees of the United States Navy were born in the dark days following Pearl Harbor when the task of building victory from defeat seemed almost insurmountable. The Seabees were created in answer to a crucial demand for builders who could fight. Using sailors to build shore-based facilities; however, was not a new idea. Ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans did it. In more recent times, from the earliest days ofthe United States Navy, sailors who were handy with tools occasionally did minor construction chores at land bases. After the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States entry into the war, the use of civilian labor in war zones became impractical. Under international law civilians were not permitted to resist enemy military attack. Resistance meant summary execution as guerrillas. The need for a militarized Naval Construction Force to build advance bases in the war zone was self-evident. Therefore, Rear Admiral Ben Moreell determined to activate, organize, and man Navy construction units. On 28 December 1941, he requested specific authority to carry out this decision, and on 5 January 1942, he gained authority from the Bureau of Navigation to recruit men from the construction trades for assignment to a Naval Construction Regiment composed of three Naval Construction Battalions. This is the actual beginning of the renowned Seabees, who obtained their designation from the initial letters of Construction Battalion. Admiral Moreell personally furnished them with their official motto: Construimus, Batuimus -- "We Build, We Fight."

Katrina and the Forgotten Gulf Coast by Betty Plombon Pdf

August 29, 2005, was the day that Mother Nature decided to once again "slam dunk" the Gulf Coast as she sent Hurricane Katrina careening into basically the same area that Hurricane Camille hit in 1969. This book describes the events as Katrina roared into Diamondhead, Mississippi, a 35-year-old retirement community of 8,000 residents that sits on the top of the Bay of St. Louis, five miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. Diamondhead is located just to the right of where the eye of the storm hit. The book also touches on the devastation of surrounding towns such as the Kiln, Waveland and Bay St. Louis and more. (Title) is a gripping portrait of a small community, convinced that water would never come over Interstate Highway 10 (I-0) and reach its streets. Diamondhead was thrown into chaos as the fury of Katrina sent tornadoes and floodwaters of up to thirty feet of water into its streets and homes. The national media failed to consider this community as hard hit by Katrina although some 500 homes were uninhabitable following the storm. First-hand, personal and bizarre survival stories of real people, many who stayed for the storm, are revealed as they remember that terrifying day. These detailed anecdotes are accompanied by dozens of photos. This is the story of a community that was left to rely on its wits, ingenuity, generosity and neighbors in order to return their lives to normalcy. It is definitely a book for armchair storm chasers.
