This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... Bishop Graziani. Most of the ancient geographers and historians have mentioned the Isle of Cyprus with commendation. They divided it into nine kingdoms, although the whole island scarcely deserves such a title. She is situated between Cilicia and Syria, in that part of the Mediterranean Sea which flows nearest Asia. The Seas of Pamphylia and Egypt with the gulf of Issus surround her, lying from the continent about sixty miles over against Cilicia, and ninety distant from Syria. 'Tis thought she was heretofore a peninsula-joining that side of Asia, being separated by the violence of a flood. She contains 210 miles in length and 65 in largeness, and is in cjircuit five hundred and more. 'Tis said there were heretofore fifteen considerable cities; but at present there are only reckoned five which are well inhabited, Nicosia, Famagusta, Paphos, Imissos and Cerines. The rest are villages and hamlets to the number of 840, divided into eleven districts named Paphos, Audima, Imissa, Massota, Salines, Mesarea, Chrysochou, Pendagia, Cerines, Carpas, le Vicomte. This island is reckoned at present to contain about 200,000 inhabitants, a small number in comparison of that which 'twas peopled under the reign of the Emperor Trajan: seeing that, according to the report of Dion Cassius in the life of this Prince, in a conspiracy of the Jews there were massacred in one day B '240,000 Cypriots. The inhabitants of this island were separated into four different states, the nobility, the commonalty, the freedmen and slaves. The two last only were employed in husbandry, and the others lived in cities, and accustomed the country people (contrary to right) to servitude. The largest class were the freedmen, whom they called the Francomates. Those who not yet...

Excerpt from Travels in the Island of Cyprus: With Contemporary Accounts of the Sieges of Nicosia and Famagusta Of the three hundred years which elapsed between these two noteworthy dates in Cypriot history we know very little. Visitors came and went, complained of the heat and the dis comforts of travel, and commented with more or less acumen on the information which filtered to them through their interpreters. Infidels by Andrew Wheatcroft Pdf

Here is the first panoptic history of the long struggle between the Christian West and Islam. In this dazzlingly written, acutely nuanced account, Andrew Wheatcroft tracks a deep fault line of animosity between civilizations. He begins with a stunning account of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, then turns to the main zones of conflict: Spain, from which the descendants of the Moors were eventually expelled; the Middle East, where Crusaders and Muslims clashed for years; and the Balkans, where distant memories spurred atrocities even into the twentieth century. Throughout, Wheatcroft delves beneath stereotypes, looking incisively at how images, ideas, language, and technology (from the printing press to the Internet), as well as politics, religion, and conquest, have allowed each side to demonize the other, revive old grievances, and fuel across centuries a seemingly unquenchable enmity. Finally, Wheatcroft tells how this fraught history led to our present maelstrom. We cannot, he argues, come to terms with today’s perplexing animosities without confronting this dark past.

Historical Dictionary of Cyprus by Farid Mirbagheri,Emilios A. Solomou Pdf

As a major tourist destination and the most eastern member of the European Union, housing two British Sovereign Bases and sitting at the intersection of three continents, Cyprus attracts international attention in more ways than one; hence the complex web of converging and conflicting outside interests that has marked and scarred the country’s history. Since 2009, when the previous edition appeared, further big changes have occurred with the United Nations-led efforts to bring about a settlement to the Cyprus problem as well as the latest on the exploration of hydrocarbon in the eastern Mediterranean seabed. Historical Dictionary of Cyprus, Second Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has several hundred cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, architecture, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Cyprus.

Othello: A Critical Reader by Robert C. Evans Pdf

Othello has long been, and remains, one of Shakespeare's most popular works. It is a favourite work of scholars, students, and general readers alike. Perhaps more than any other of Shakespeare's tragedies, this one seems to speak most clearly to contemporary readers and audiences, partly because it deals with such pressing modern issues as race, gender, multiculturalism, and the ways love, jealousy, and misunderstanding can affect relations between romantic partners. The play also features Iago, one of Shakespeare's most mesmerizing and puzzling villains. This guide offers students and scholars an introduction to the play's critical and performance history, including notable stage productions and film versions. It includes a keynote chapter outlining major areas of current research on the play and four new critical essays. Finally, a guide to critical, web-based and production-related resources and an annotated bibliography provide a basis for further research.
