The Social Communication Intervention Programme (SCIP) has been developed to support school-aged children (6–11 years) with social communication, pragmatic, and language needs. The Social Communication Intervention Programme Manual provides a rationale and method for providing specialist level language therapy for these children who have significant social communication differences. Evidence for the effectiveness of SCIP is included in The Manual. This book introduces the SCIP model and explores the three main components: social understanding/social inference, pragmatics, and language processing. Guidance is included on how to link assessment with therapy, how to plan and individualise interventions, and how to proceed with the programme. It contains a wealth of real-life case examples to illustrate key points, with step-by-step instructions for carrying out the interventions. Used alongside The Social Communication Intervention Programme Resource, this book offers a truly practical, tried-and-tested model to provide targeted, individualised intervention for children with social communication challenges. It is an essential tool for speech and language therapists, specialist teachers, and psychologists who are working with children with social communication, pragmatic, and language needs. Handbook of Child Language Disorders by Richard G. Schwartz Pdf

The acquisition of language is one of the most remarkable human achievements. When language acquisition fails to occur as expected, the impact can be far-reaching, affecting all aspects of the child’s life and the child’s family. Thus, research into the nature, causes, and remediation of children’s language disorders provides important insights into the nature of language acquisition and its underlying bases and leads to innovative clinical approaches to these disorders. This second edition of the Handbook of Child Language Disorders brings together a distinguished group of clinical and academic researchers who present novel perspectives on researching the nature of language disorders in children. The handbook is divided into five sections: Typology; Bases; Language Contexts; Deficits, Assessment, and Intervention; and Research Methods. Topics addressed include autism, specific language impairment, dyslexia, hearing impairment, and genetic syndromes and their deficits, along with introductions to genetics, speech production and perception, neurobiology, linguistics, cognitive science, and research methods. With its global context, this handbook also includes studies concerning children acquiring more than one language and variations within and across languages. Thoroughly revised, this edition offers state-of-the-art information in child language disorders together in a single volume for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students. It will also serve as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in speech-language pathology, audiology, special education, and neuropsychology, as well as for individuals interested in any aspect of language acquisition and its disorders.

SCIP, Social Competence Intervention Program by Laura Ann Guli,Alison Diane Wilkinson,Margaret Semrud-Clikeman Pdf

SCIP is a 16-session, drama-based intervention for youth ages 8-14 on the autism spectrum. The authors blend current research from neuropsychology and information from the field of creative drama to help students accurately perceive and respond to nonverbal aspects of social interactions, such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Program sessions are divided into three parts: input, integration, and output. Input--the basic perception of social cues. Integration--how to put social cues together. Output--how to respond appropriately to others. Students are asked to participate in process dramas and take on roles that explore various outcomes. During role plays, students learn to divide complex social interactions into sequential parts, discuss the emotions involved, and act out a variety of possible responses. They also learn practical skills for dealing with teasing and understanding complex social cues. An accompanying CD of all the reproducible forms and student handouts is included with the book.

Time to Talk by Jean Gross Pdf

Time to Talk provides a powerful and accessible resource for practitioners to help develop their own skills, as well as supporting a whole-school or setting approach to speaking and listening. Jean Gross helpfully summarises research on what helps children and young people develop good language and communication skills, and highlights the importance of key factors: a place to talk, a reason to talk and support for talk. This practical and engaging book also provides: whole-class approaches to developing all children and young people’s speaking and listening skills; ‘catch-up’ strategies for those with limited language ways in which settings and schools can develop an effective partnership with specialists, such as speech and language therapists, to help children with more severe needs; examples of good practice in supporting parents/carers to develop their children’s language skills; answers to practitioners’ most frequently asked questions about speech and language. This book is for all school leaders, teachers and Early Years practitioners concerned about the growing number of children and young people with limited language and communication skills.
