The Routledge Handbook of Pink Floyd by Chris Hart,Simon A. Morrison Pdf

The Routledge Handbook of Pink Floyd is intended for scholars and researchers of popular music, as well as music industry professionals and fans of the band. It brings together international researchers to assess, evaluate and reformulate approaches to the critical study and interpretation of one of the world’s most important and successful bands. For the first time, this Handbook will ‘tear down the wall,’ examining the band’s collective artistic creations and the influence of social, technological, commercial and political environments over several decades on their work. Divided into five parts, the book provides a thoroughly contextualised overview of the musical works of Pink Floyd, including coverage of performance and sound; media, reception and fandom; genre; periods of Pink Floyd’s work; and aesthetics and subjectivity. Drawing on art, design, performance, culture and counterculture, emergent theoretical resources and analytical frames are evaluated and discussed from across the social sciences, humanities and creative arts. The Handbook is intended for scholars and researchers of popular music, as well as music industry professionals. It will appeal across a range of related subjects from music production to cultural studies and media/communication studies.

Do You Believe in Rock and Roll? by Raymond I. Schuck,Ray Schuck Pdf

Since its release in 1971, Don McLean's song "American Pie" has become an indelible part of U.S. culture. It has sparked countless debates about the references within the lyrics; been celebrated as a chronicle of American life from the late 1950s through the early 1970s; and has become iconic itself as it has been remade, parodied, and referenced within numerous texts and forums. This volume offers a set of new essays that focus on the cultural and historical significance of the song. Representing a variety of perspectives and fields of study, the essays address such topics as historical and literary interpretations of the song's lyrics, its musical qualities, the commentary the song offers on rock and roll history, the continuing significance of the song, and the ways in which the song has been used by various writers and artists. Music Scenes by Andy Bennett,Richard A. Peterson Pdf

While more than 80 percent of the world's commercial music is controlled by four multinational firms, most music is made and enjoyed in diverse situations divorced from such corporate behemoths. These fourteen original essays examine the fascinating world of "music scenes," those largely inconspicuous sites where clusters of musicians, producers, and fans explore their common musical tastes and distinctive lifestyle choices. Although most music scenes come and go with hardly a trace, they nevertheless give immense satisfaction to their participants, and a few - New York bop jazz, Merseybeat, Memphis rockabilly, London punk, Bronx hiphop - achieve fame and spur musical innovations. To date, serious study of the scenes phenomenon has focused mainly on specific music scenes while paying less attention to recurrent dynamics of scene life, such as how individuals construct and negotiate scenes to the various activities. This volume remedies that neglect. The editors distinguish between three types of scenes - local, translocal, and virtual - which provide the organizing framework for the essays. Aspects of local scenes, which are confined to specific areas, are explored through essays on Chicago blues, rave, karaoke, teen pop, and salsa. The section on translocal scenes, which involve the coming together of scattered local scenes around a particular type of music and lifestyle, includes articles on Riot Grrrls, goths, art music, and anarcho-punk. Aspects of virtual scenes, in which fans communicate via the internet, are illustrated using alternative country, the Canterbury sound, postrock, and Kate Bush fans. Also included is an essay that shows how the social conditions in places where jazz was made influenced that music's development.

Exploring Meteorite Mysteries by National Aeronautics and Space Administration Pdf

All of these people have discovered possible evidence of rocks from space that passed through the atmosphere and landed on Earth. Sometimes there is little or no evidence of the rock itself; it burned up in the atmosphere or broke up on impact. Other times the rock is all there is, with little evidence of its fiery entry or crash landing. These events all involve the mysteries of meteorites: what they are, where they come from, how they got here, how they affect people, and what they tell us about the solar system. These are some of the questions that are investigated in Exploring Meteorite Mysteries.

Space Daze by Dave Thompson Pdf

In the beginning, there was Space Rock. Not quite in the very beginning, of course; sundry creation myths notwithstanding, nothing springs from absolutely nothing. But Space Rock has been with us 50 years, and it will surely be with us for at least 50 more. To the first Floyd fans, it is ""Astronomy Domine""; to mid-period Gong fans, it is the Flying Teapot trilogy. To the festival faithful, it is ""Uncle Harry's Last Freakout'; to the Hawkwind fans who still flock to see them, it was and is it all. Space Rock embraces all these things; Space Rock thus became all these things. And if the basics are blurred, ask Daevid Allen, Syd Barrett, Tim Blake, Edgar Broughton, Arthur Brown, Can, Robert Calvert, Chrome, the Deviants, Mick Farren, Faust, Edgar Froese, Gong, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Hillage, Kraftwerk, Legendary Pink Dots, Man, Michael Moorcock, Pink Fairies, Popol Vuh, Pressurehed, Quiet Sun, Ramases, Klaus Schulze, Sky Cries Mary, Sphynx, Tangerine Dream, Steve Took, Nik Turner, Twink AND MORE!
