The Spell of Algeria and Tunisia by Francis Miltoun Pdf

Originally published in 1908 under the title in the Land of Mosques and Minarets, this book was reissued in 1924 as The Spell of Algeria and Tunisia. At the time of Francis Miltoun's travels, new trade links were being forged and the wealth of North Africa was beginning to be exploited by America and Europe. The region was 'fast becoming known to the world of modern travellers as the newest winter playground', but despite the invasions of Western culture and tourism, the Arab retained much of his enigmatic Oriental mystique: 'What the Arab thinks about, and what he is likely to do next no one knows, or can even conjecture with any degree of certainty', observes the author, whose knowledge of Algeria and Tunisia and their inhabitants is impressive. Against the background of the eventful history and the recent economic development of the two countries, the author draws a vivid picture of contemporary Arab society and describes the main places of interest for the casual tourist or more serious traveller, enlivening the account with amusing stories of his own adventures. The book is reprinted here in a handsome facsimile of the 1924 edition, complete with Blanche McManus's numerous colour plates, drawings and maps.

The Algerian Problem by Edward Samuel Behr Pdf

Foreign correspondent Edward Behr’s work frequently took him to Algeria, and in 1958 he first published this book, The Algerian Problem. Written at a time when the war was far from over, and going back a century or more over the background, it was widely considered a fair assessment of a problem which many Frenchmen reckoned no foreigner could possibly understand. The book had the virtue of being written by a French-speaking outsider with some understanding of, and sympathy for, the positions of both the French and the Algerians. It was considered to be compulsory reading at the United States Department of State. “Mr. Behr is the member of the Paris bureau of Time-Life charged with North African affairs, and he knows the subject from long and bitter experience. In so far as it is possible, he has kept an objective mind about Algeria; he is accurate, concise and thoughtful. Of the score or so books about the war, his is easily the best.”—New Statesman

According to the contributors to this lively volume, the conflicting approaches of regional specialists and discipline-oriented social scientists must be combined to provide a firm foundation for studying the contemporary politics of the Middle East. Contributors are Lisa Anderson, Anne Banda, Laurie A. Brand, Laura Zittrain Eisenberg, John P. Entelis, Clement M. Henry, Magda Kandil, Baghat Korany, Jodi Nachtwey, Augustus Richard Norton, and Mark Tessler.
