The Story of the Regiment (Classic Reprint) by William Henry Locke Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of the Regiment The first object sought in this volume is to put on permanent record the deeds of a brave and noble regi ment - em effort that will be fully appreciated by its numerous friends. The author also designs that it should be a contribution to the general history of the war. To secure such a history, the story of each sep arate regiment must first be known. The duties of the writer did not require him to carry either sword or musket, and the story he here tells is made up from a note-book never absent from him, whether in camp or on the march. When the original record - sometimes made during a halt along the road side, and sometimes in the midst of battle - better tells the story, that record is inserted, day and date. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ...Compelled to retire from his first line at Chancellorville by the breaking of the Eleventh Corps, there was an equally disastrous failure on the part of General Sedgwick to carry out the operations assigned to him. Instead of uniting his forces with those on the right, the advantage of the capture of Fredericksburg hights was all lost; and to save his command from destruction or capture, Sedgwick was compelled to retire by way of Bank's Ford to the north side of the Rappahannock. Hooker now determined to withdraw from Chancellorville. The movement was to commence on Monday night. But a heavy rainstorm, swelling the river to flood-hight, and making it necessary to take up one of the pontoon bridges to lengthen the remaining two, delayed the crossing until Tuesday. The retrograde march was from left of the line to right. Early Wednesday morning Colonel Coulter was ordered to call in the Eleventh, still on picket, as quietly as possible. An hour later, the regiment was concentrated in the intrenchments, now abandoned by all but the One-hundred-and-seventh Pennsylvania. We were the rear-guard of the army. Moving quickly back toward the river, with flanks and rear protected by a strong line of skirmishers, of all the thousands of men who had marched over that ground, and the hundreds of wagons and artillery that were going and coming night and day for a week past, nothing was to be seen. The fire that blazed so furiously in the midnight of Saturday, had burned far into the woods, leaving the road-side lined with charred and smouldering tree trunks, while here and there a noble oak, growing among its meaner kind, and more tenacious of life than they, presented in that early morning a heart still glowing with fire. Not a foe followed our...

Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ...ready. The paymasters of the New Hampshire regiments have drawn shoes, hose and some overalls, shirts, etc., for the most necessitous men. These will be conveyed to Albany in a few days when all the detachments will join their corps." The regiment wintered in detachments at Saratoga, Schenectady and the neighboring posts. At this time the difficulties between New York and Vermont were at their height and a condition little short of actual war existed between them, while Gen. Stark thought New Hampshire ought to settle the difficulty by claiming the territory it had formerly granted arid holding it. In April, 1782, Washington established his head quarters at Newburg, where he continued most of the time, till nearly all the army was discharged. In the autumn the army, which had mainly all been encamped at Verplanck's point, marched up and was hutted at New Windsor, two miles below Washington's quarters, and here or in the neighborhood our regiment spent the winter of 1782 and the following year. These were months of repose, the war was over, their long weary marches and months of privations were past, the battles had been fought, the great cause for which they had so long contended was gained, and they could look forward to peace and prosperity. But the definitive treaty had not been signed, and the British army still held New Tork. Under these circumstances Washington recommended that the army should still he retained, and so they remained till November, when the British commander notified.Washington that he was ready to evacuate the city of New York, which he soon did, and "Washington entered it the same day, and during that month nearly all of our troops were disbanded.. '. But for some reason the First New Hampshire regiment, ...

To the North Anna River by Gordon C. Rhea Pdf

With To the North Anna River, the third book in his outstanding five-book series, Gordon C. Rhea continues his spectacular narrative of the initial campaign between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee in the spring of 1864. May 13 through 25, a phase oddly ignored by historians, was critical in the clash between the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia. During those thirteen days -- an interlude bracketed by horrific battles that riveted the public's attention -- a game of guile and endurance between Grant and Lee escalated to a suspenseful draw on Virginia's North Anna River. From the bloodstained fields of the Mule Shoe to the North Anna River, with Meadow Bridge, Myers Hill, Harris Farm, Jericho Mills, Ox Ford, and Doswell Farm in between, grueling night marches, desperate attacks, and thundering cavalry charges became the norm for both Grant's and Lee's men. But the real story of May 13--25 lay in the two generals' efforts to outfox each other, and Rhea charts their every step and misstep. Realizing that his bludgeoning tactics at the Bloody Angle were ineffective, Grant resorted to a fast-paced assault on Lee's vulnerable points. Lee, outnumbered two to one, abandoned the offensive and concentrated on anticipating Grant's maneuvers and shifting quickly enough to repel them. It was an amazingly equal match of wits that produced a gripping, high-stakes bout of warfare -- a test, ultimately, of improvisation for Lee and of perseverance for Grant.
